Places to see in ( Berlin - Germany ) Pfaueninsel
This island in the River Havel was settled thousands of years ago. From the Iron Age bronze bangles, bracelets and hair spirals found here, we know that people were living on the island around 2,500 years ago. In the seventeenth century, Friedrich Wilhelm, Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia, set up a glass works on the island. This was an ideal location for chemist and glass maker Johannes Kunckel to conduct his experiments into making pure and coloured glass. But when his patron died and the foundry burnt down, Kunckel found himself in some considerable difficulty. Ultimately, his search for a new employer took him to the court of Charles XI in Stockholm.
The island lay forgotten for one hundred years, until it was discovered by the pleasure-loving Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia. Even as a young crown prince, he liked the island as a venue for a clandestine rendezvous with his mistress Wilhelmine Enke, later Countess Wilhelmine von Lichtenau. Between 1794 and 1797, Friedrich Wilhelm II had a little summer palace built on the island. Designed as a ruin in the popular Romantic style of the day, the palace was supposed to evoke a “derelict rural Roman villa”.
The exterior resembles white marble, though that too belongs to the illusion – the walls are actually painted wood. The little white palace, set in a prominent clearing at the end of the island, also created a distinctive landmark – an eye-catching feature for one of the vistas from the New Garden in Potsdam. Even today, visitors and locals alike are charmed by the view of the palace’s two flanking white towers joined by a cast iron bridge set against the backdrop of trees. Countess Wilhelmine von Lichtenau, Friedrich Wilhelm II’s mistress, designed the interior to her personal taste. Rather than following a particular style, she chose selected pieces of outstanding quality. After her death, the palace was little used by the Prussian rulers.
Queen Louise, the wife of Friedrich Wilhelm III, complained about the thin walls, and preferred the comforts of Paretz Palace on a rural estate to the west of Berlin. Although many buildings in Berlin were damaged during the Second World War, the little palace on Peacock Island survived unscathed and so still remains in its original form today. Peacock Island is now under the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg. Together with Glienicke Palace and the Potsdam palace landscape, the island with its little palace is inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage.

Die 67 ha große Pfaueninsel, die Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1793 erwarb, zeichnet sich durch landschaftsgärtnerische Gestaltung sowie einen uralten Baumbestand von etwa 400 malerischen Eichen aus. Johann August Eyserbeck, Peter Joseph Lenné und Ferdinand Fintelmann brachten sie mit der Wegeführung und Gehölzgruppierung zur Geltung.
Weithin sichtbar ist das 1794 erbaute weiße Schloss mit den charakteristischen Türmen und der sie verbindenden Brücke. Von hier schweift der Blick über die Havel nach Glienicke, zum Neuen Garten und nach Sacrow, auf den weißen Ruinenbau der Meierei, die Voliere und den Wasservogelteich im Zentrum der Insel.
Gegenüber dem 1989 wiederhergestellten frühesten Rosengarten in Preußen zeugen Steinpostamente und Beete mit historischen Blattpflanzen von dem Palmenhaus, das 1881 ein Feuer zerstörte.

Die kleine Insel liegt in der Havel, im Stadtteil Wannsee, und ist ein Naturschutzgebiet in dem Pfaue auf den Gehwegen herumspazieren. The Peacock Island or in German Pfaueninsel is an island located in the Havel River in the Southwest of Berlin. Near the island, you might know the popular Wannsee. The island is one of the top destinations during the summertime due to its extended green areas and wildlife. It also remains as a reserve for wild birds like the peacock. It is a wonderful spot to relax, breath and enjoy nature far away from the busy city life. Do you want to walk around with some peacocks, then come #FollowMeAround :)

Die Pfaueninsel steht seit 1990 als Weltkulturerbe auf der Liste der UNESCO. Gestern habe ich nach langer Zeit mal wieder der Insel einen Besuch abgestattet.

Die Pfaueninsel im Land Berlin ist ein Landschaftspark im Berliner Bereich der Havelgegend. Die Pfaueninsel gehört der Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG). Um dieses unersetzliche Juwel der Nachwelt zu erhalten steht die Pfaueninsel seit 1990 zusammen mit den Schlössern und Parks von Sanssouci in Potsdam und Glienicke in Berlin als Weltkulturerbe auf der Unescoliste als besonders schützens wertes Weltkulturerbe. Die Pfaueninsel ist 67 Hektar gross und hat einen besondere Verbindung zu Ereignissen und Personen der brandenburgisch-preußischen Geschichte. Die Insel ist ein besonderer Teil des Ortteiles Wannsee, das ein wald und wasserreicher Bezirk im Südwesten Berlins ist. Die Entfernungen zur Stadtmitte Berlins sind etwa 22 Kilometer (Luftlinie), zur Stadtmitte Potsdams sind es nur rund fünf Kilometer. Seit 1924 ist die Pfaueninsel als Naturschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. Das Naturschutzgebiet ist auch ein Rückzugsgebiet für seltene Pflanzen und Tierarten und ist Teil des Europäischen Vogelschutzgebiets Westlicher Düppeler Forst.
Verkehrstechnisch ist die Pfaueninsel durch die S-Bahnstation Wannsee und die anschließende Bus- und Fährverbindung mit der Innenstadt verbunden. Wie früher eine Landschaft im Samland wird die Pfaueninsel als „preußisches Paradies bezeichnet.

The important history of the Pfaueninsel, an island in Lake Wannsee in the area of Berlin/Germany, began in 1793 under the Prussian king Frederick William II. He created a love nest for his mistress Wilhelmine Enke including a Lustschloß and an English garden. Until 1797 he settled peacocks on the island. In 1824/1825 the famous architect Schinkel extended under Frederick William III the Kavaliershaus, which is visible in the film.
In 1821 Peter Joseph Lenné began the reconstructuring of the island to an ornamental and kitchen garden.
Since 1824 the island was protected as a nature reserve due to the involvement of the entomologist Wolfgang Stichel.
The Blue Peafowl (Pavo cristatus) has polygamic males with several hens (and their youngsters). He protects his hens against competitors, and in the mating period (April-August) as a courtship display, he turns a feather-cartwheel presenting resplendently coloured tail-feathers with smaller rattling feathers on the backside to motivate the females getting ready for the mating procedure. When she comes close to him, he always turns his body and presents his hindquarters to her (the behavior is visible in the film). The female selection in the peafowls leads to more offspring corresponding to the intensity of splendour in males (sexual selection).

m Südwesten der Stadt gelegen, liegt diese Insel versteckt und unauffällig gelegen am Düppeler Forst. Erreichbar nur mit einer Fähre, das Übersetzen von Autos ist nur den Bewohnern erlaubt. Auf der Insel begegnen dem Spaziergänger freilebende Pfauen zwischen den hunderte Jahre alten Gebäuden. Die gesamte Insel ist im Februar 1924 zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt worden, und 1990 in die UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe - Liste aufgenommen worden, und bietet so noch heute und morgen Natur- und Vogelfreunden ein einmaliges Erlebnis.
