The Schlernmassiv – the emblem of South Tyrol
With its altitude of 2,563 m, the Schlern is not one of the highest mountains in South Tyrol, but it is certainly one of the most unmistakable! Due to its bizarre and unusual shape it is considered as the emblem of South Tyrol. The first ascent took place in 1880 by Johann Santner, to whom a peak – the Santnerspitze – owes its name.
In 2003 the Naturpark Schlern-Rosengarten was established. This nature reserve, which protects the unique flora and fauna of Dolomites spreads over an area of 6,796 ha.
Schlernmassiv has always been known as legendary:
The legend says that the terrifying “Schlernhexen”, the Schlern Witches live inside this mountain, and at their meetings they cause severe storms and other catastrophes. Today, among other things, the “Schlernhexen-Tour” leads to the places where once the dark creatures have lived. This makes the “Hexenbänke on the Puflatch” (witches’ benches on the Puflatsch) to a popular excursion destination.
