Siem Reap, Cambodia - Phare Circus
Travelling while doing something for a cause is something beyond rewarding. Last May, I was able to travel to Siem Reap to visit the Angkor Wat. That was the only enjoyable thing I imagined myself to engage in in going to Siem Reap. However, something suddenly appeared on our google search that is Phare: The Cambodian Circus. This is a different kind of circus for they perform for a cause. They use the money to finance the education of some aspiring artists in their place. I must say that this will never be a waste of your money. You will definitely enjoy the show and have that internal happiness in you knowing that you are able to help.
SOKRIAS (ECLIPSE) - Phare Ponleu Selpak, The Cambodian Circus | Siem Reap Cambodia
How far would someone go to fight back against rejection and bullying?
In a rural Cambodian village, a disfigured young man is rejected and ridiculed. He wonders why he is cursed and seeks help from the gods. They answer his prayers by transforming him into a beautiful woman with magical powers. Using this new form, he attracts the attention and desire of the village men. But the villagers quickly discover there’s something sinister about the newcomer in their midst.
Based on traditional Cambodian folktales, Eclipse is a story of rejection, revenge, spirit possession and eventual forgiveness set to original music and told through a dramatic mix of theater, Apsara dance and modern circus arts.
Phare Circus, Siem Reap, Cambodia May 2016
This video is about Phare Circus, Siem Reap, Cambodia May 2016. This show was entitled Sokha and it is the story of a young girl who was traumatized by war and its aftermath. Through dance, theater, and acrobatics, Sokha conveys a wide range of emotions. This one-hour show made me laugh and cry. The music is evocative and the actors/performers were magnificent. Kudos to the writers, performers, and director.

Phare, The Cambodian Circus, Siem Reap (Highlights)
Before we came to Siem Reap, everyone we spoke to said the same thing: ‘you have to visit the Cambodian Circus!’
We saw Phare’s Sokrias (eclipse) show, and it was one of the most amazing performances we’d ever seen. There was gymnastics, dancing (they even did the floss dance!), comedy, fire and terrifying stunts.
But what made the circus even more amazing was the story behind it.
It was started by nine guys who came home to Siem Reap after spending time in a refugee camp at the end of the Khmer Rouge.
They started the circus to give young people from vulnerable households and difficult backgrounds a chance to train in the arts. The circus offers young people free education, and a reliable income.

Phare, The Cambodian Circus: Amazing vibe & energy, transforming the lives of Cambodian youth
More than just a circus, Phare, the Cambodian Circus (pharecambodiancircus.org) performers use theater, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories from recent history, folklore or modern society.
Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak's (phareps.org) vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by 9 young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy and wanted to share this new skill among the poor, socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school and public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their own tales.
Phare The Cambodian Circus offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.
Shinta Mani Club & Resort (shintamani.com), an upscale boutique hotel created by acclaimed architect Bill Bensley, showcases contemporary designed rooms and public spaces in an Angkorian-inspired design.
Shinta Mani with its “Open Doors, Open Hearts” reflects our commitment to responsible tourism. USD5 of your nightly room rate will be donated to the Shinta Mani Foundation to help us to achieve our goal of creating a lasting and positive impact for the people of Cambodia.

Same Same but Different - Trailer
Same Same but Different
Through a series of everyday situations, “Same Same But Different” explores the different habits and ways of living between Cambodians and foreign visitors. A sudden downpour, an unexpected power outage, a hectic boat trip and a relaxing dinner all provide the backdrops for funny encounters and opposing perspectives. But in every situation they find understanding and connect at a human level.
A very honest expression by the artists of how they find humor in the differences between how Cambodians approach daily life vs others.

Phare, The Cambodian circus in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Phunam, a Contortionist in Phare, The Cambodian Circus
As a young girl, Phunam picked trash to help support her family. Growing up her father beat her mother, abused Phunam, and gave her mother AIDS. He prohibited her from pursuing her dreams at Phare Ponleau Selpak, a visual and performing arts school that uses the rich and turbulent history of Cambodia as an inspiration and structure for their creative work. Overcoming adversities, Phunam is now pursuing her dreams and is the leading contortionist of the Battambang Circus, which is part of the Phare Ponleau Selpak School. One day Phunam hopes to become a director of an art program supporting young Cambodians in their quest for creative expression. She has traveled outside of Cambodia performing productions that tell the story of the struggles and triumphs of Cambodia. She and her fellow performers write the stories that they perform.

All performers in Phare The Cambodian Circus learn their skills through Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS), an Association providing arts education in Battambang, Cambodia. Young people from the streets, orphanages and struggling families in the community come to PPS to learn, express and heal themselves through the arts.
PPS formed 20 years ago by 9 children and their art teacher when they returned home from a refugee camp after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. As survivors of the war, empowered by the creative self-expression learned through their art-making, the group wanted to share this gift of the arts with the underprivileged children of Battambang.
They founded an art school and a public school quickly followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next, and finally, the circus school. Today more than 1,200 pupils attend the public school daily and 500 attend the alternative schools.
In 2013 Phare Performing Social Enterprise (PPSE) was founded in Siem Reap to offer visitors and locals alike Phare The Cambodian Circus. This offers PPS students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a living wage. Operating in Siem Reap for over a year now, we hope to soon be making enough money to increase our artist’s compensation and generate real revenue to support ongoing PPS social and educational programming. Our 3 goals are to:
Create a gainful career opportunity for our artists.
Financially sustain our business and our parent organization, Phare Ponleu Selpak.
Develop the artistic culture of Cambodia.
We envision the arts as an instrument for human development and social change. Through international recognition for Cambodian arts, we at Phare can secure a brighter future for our community.
