A4 / V2 Rocket in detail: Turbopump
The A4 / V2 turbopump: part 1. If the V2 rocket could be said to have a beating heart, it would undoubtedly be the 600 horsepower steam turbine-powered twin propellant pump system.
Lower down the page is an index jump list that will take you to specific parts of this video.
Starting in 1935 the project to develop the V2 turbopump was one of a handful of key technologies that made the ballistic missile a viable possibility. Even today, the turbopump remains a key technology that enables liquid-fuelled rocket engines to develop the thrust needed to reach orbit.
In this comprehensive video, we look at the steam turbine-powered propellant pumps of the infamous V2 rocket - the world's first ballistic missile and the first human-made object to enter the realm of space beyond 100km altitude.
The video looks initially at the general form of the steam turbine and two independent centrifugal pumps and the location of the pump assembly on the missile before moving on to a detailed look at an original V2 turbopump on display in Peenemünde - the place of its birth. Along the way, we answer the question: why do we need a turbopump?
We look at the German army history of the turbopump and the vital role played by civilian contractors, not just in the manufacturing supply of the propellant pumping system - but in its development as well.
The video takes a detailed look at the Helmut Walter steam generator - the system that supplied the energetic stream of super-heated steam to the turbine wheel to power the twin pumps and deliver over 8 tons of fuel and liquid oxygen to the thrust chamber in a little over a minute! The simple and powerful monopropellant chemistry used by the steam generator also comes in for close scrutiny with a detailed, and safe, test of the method used (safe, but not without mishap and humour). With a detailed explanation of the unique two-stage launch system that relied on the turbopump for its success.
We find out what can be learnt from historical turbopump relics found at impact sites and research facilities.

1:18:12 The Steam rotor
1:26:27 A look at historical relics of the turbopump
1:48:47 What's in part 2, followed by closing credits
In part two of this video we'll be looking at some of the less well-known aspects of the turbopump; exploring the steam exhaust system, the gyroscopic phenomena associated with the turbopump and the surprising logic behind the turbopumps safety cut-off system.

LichtRouten-Projekt: Leuchtende Vorbilder

Phänomenta is a science center with a focus on physics. It is one of the anchor points of the urban renewal project Denkfabrik think tank and is currently being expanded. For example, a 75-meter steel structure is built, in which a Foucault pendulum will illustrate the Earth's rotation.
Vollrad Kutscher
Photography, Photogram, light and video projection, sculpturing, installation and performance are part of Vollrad Kutscher's portfolio. A recurring subject in his works is the reciprocal relation of image and imagination, especially in diverse series of portraits. When he is using light as sculpturing material it is playing the role of elusive images of thought which in the material world only appear as a reflection. His installations are internal and external observations of identity shaping processes in which cerebration and existence are being synchronized.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! SUMMARY
=======
The Space Race refers to the 20th-century competition between two Cold War rivals, the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States (US), for dominance in spaceflight capability. It had its origins in the missile-based nuclear arms race between the two nations that occurred following World War II, aided by captured German missile technology and personnel from the Aggregat program.
The technological superiority required for such dominance was seen as necessary for national security, and symbolic of ideological superiority. The Space Race spawned pioneering efforts to launch artificial satellites, uncrewed space probes of the Moon, Venus, and Mars, and human spaceflight in low Earth orbit and to the Moon.
The Space Race began on August 2, 1955, when the Soviet Union responded to the US announcement four days earlier of intent to launch artificial satellites for the International Geophysical Year, by declaring they would also launch a satellite in the near future. The Soviet Union beat the US to the first successful launch, with the October 4, 1957, orbiting of Sputnik 1, and later beat the US to have the first human in earth orbit, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961. The race peaked with the July 20, 1969, US landing of the first humans on the Moon with Apollo 11. The USSR attempted several crewed lunar missions but eventually canceled them and concentrated on Earth orbital space stations.
A period of détente followed with the April 1972 agreement on a co-operative Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, resulting in the July 1975 rendezvous in Earth orbit of a US astronaut crew with a Soviet cosmonaut crew. The end of the Space Race is harder to pinpoint than its beginning, but it was over by the December 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union, after which spaceflight cooperation between the US and Russia flourished.
The Space Race has left a legacy of Earth communications and weather satellites, and continuing human space presence on the International Space Station. It has also sparked increases in spending on education and research and development, which led to beneficial spin-off technologies.

German Mainframe Computer DERA - Documentary from 1963
[Enable English Subtitles, please]
At the time of this film (1963) the computer colossus DERA (Darmstädter Elektronischer Rechenautomat) was actually already outdated. It was created in the tube era of electronics. The construction of the calculating machine was conceptually based on the American calculator MARK IV by Howard Aiken (* 8 March 1900 † 14 March 1973), which was constructed between 1949 and 1952.
In 1951 at the Darmstädter Institut für Praktische Mathematik (IPM) they began, under direction of Prof. Dr. h.c. Dr. Alwin Oswald Walther (* 6 May 1898 † 4 January 1967), with the conception of the mainframe computer DERA, a serially working automatic calculator in tube technology with memory, floating point representation and decimal output. It was first used in 1957, but the further development of the computer was already reduced in 1956 and finally abandoned completely in 1959, as DERA had already been overtaken by the newly emerging semiconductor technology. Furthermore, the machine was prone to errors and was therefore shut down after 1961.
Although Prof. Alwin Oswald Walther belonged to the luminaries of early German computer development and his pedagogical as well as technical abilities in teaching were undisputed, his work during the Second World War was repeatedly discussed. Thus he and his team were involved in the ballistic calculations of the Wernher von Brauns rocket experiments in Peenemünde during the 3rd Reich.
The astronomer Dr. Rudolf Kühn (* 27 January 1926 † 4. December 1963), who conducts the interview with Prof. Alwin Walther in this film document, appeared for the first time on German television in 1955. He also co-founded the magazine Sterne und Weltraum (Stars and Space) and had the gift of presenting science topics to a broad television audience in generally understandable words. He died in a traffic accident in the same year as this television documentary.
