Punxsutawney, PA - Home to Punxsutawney Phil & Groundhog Day - Travels With Phil
Punxsutawney is a small town in western Pennsylvania. it is also the home to the world's most famous weather forecaster: Punxsutawney Phil. Phil predicts the end of weather each February 2nd.
From Wikipedia: Groundhog Day is a popular tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early. While the tradition remains popular in modern times, studies have found no consistent correlation between a groundhog seeing its shadow or not and the subsequent arrival time of spring-like weather. The film groundhog Day was shot in Woodstock, Illinois, 60 miles northwest of Chicago near the Wisconsin border, because Punxsutawney didn't have a town center that looked good on camera, according to Ramis, and because Punxsutawney's remote location magnified the logistical problems and expense of filming there.

Groundhog Day 2019: Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow? - Breaking News 247
Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil,
Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow… but did he see his shadow? Find out whether we’re in for another six weeks of winter or if spring will be coming early this year! The results are in! Punxsutawney Phil DID NOT see his shadow, which means we’ll have AN EARLY SPRING. For the 133rd year, the infamous critter kicked off Groundhog Day on Feb. 2 by emerging from his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania at sunrise, just before 7:30 a.m. ET. The groundhog then proceeded to determine what kind of weather we can expect over the next few months. He relayed his findings to the members of his Inner Circle, who then explained the prediction to thousands of people in attendance, and even more watching live. The Groundhog Day legend states that if Phil sees his show, he will go running back into his burrow because winter is far from over. However, if he doesn’t see his shadow, he’ll hang around outside because spring is near! While the celebration has gone down in Punxsutawney every year since 1886, the animal’s predictions aren’t entirely accurate. Statistics show that he has only been right 39 percent of the time. In 2018, he claimed he did see his shadow – which is the same outcome for the majority of his predictions. He’s only predicted an early spring 18 times (now 19!). If you’re wondering how this little guy has been able to predict the weather for more than a century, there is an explanation. The legend of Punxsutawney Phil states that he drinks a magical “elixir of life” every year that adds an extra seven years to his lifespan with every sip. So if you didn’t like 2019’s outcome, there’s always next year!

Why Groundhogs Supposedly Predict The Weather On Groundhog Day
On Groundhog Day, a bunch of men, wearing suits and top hats, pull a groundhog out of a hole in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They then read a scroll the groundhog supposedly wrote, that states whether or not it saw its shadow. This determines if winter will last another six weeks, or if spring is coming soon. It's a bit of an odd tradition, but a similar practice has been taking places for centuries. Following is a transcript of the video.
Groundhog Day Announcer: Our buddy, Punxsutawney Phil!
As the tradition goes, every year on February 2, Phil the groundhog comes out of his hole in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. If he sees his shadow, we'll supposedly get 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, winter is supposedly over.
Seems bizarre, right? So, how exactly did groundhogs become the go-to animal for predicting the weather?
Bill Murray: That's not bad for a quadruped. You gotta check your mirrors. Just side of your eye. Side of your eye.
The tradition comes from Germany. On an old religious holiday called Candlemas Day, the Germans paid attention to the badger. Candlemas Day was the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. If the badger saw its shadow, it meant a second winter was coming.
When the practice came to the US in 1887, the groundhog was chosen, because badgers aren't native to eastern North America. While it may seem random, there is some logic to turning to the groundhog for weather predictions.
Like badgers, groundhogs, also known as woodchucks or whistlepigs, are considered true hibernators. When they emerge from hibernation, it means winter is almost over. In winter months, their body temperature drops 62 degrees. Comparatively, if a human body temperature drops just four degrees, it goes into hypothermia.
A groundhog's hibernating heartbeat is only five beats per minute. In warmer months, its heart beats 80 times per minute. Their breathing slows down in winter too. It can go from 16 breaths per minute to about two during hibernation.
However, the idea that groundhogs are predicting the weather when they come out of hibernation may be a bit of a stretch.
Groundhog Day Announcer: It's six more weeks of winter, it must be!
The real reason groundhogs come out of their holes in early February is to look for mates. Mating season is in March, so they wake up a little early to scope out potential partners and then return to their burrow to wait out the winter. Whether the groundhog sees its shadow on February 2 has more to do with the weather that day, than the groundhog itself.
After all, Punxsutawney Phil has only been right about 30% of the time.
Groundhog Day Announcer: What? Get it right for a change.
So we're probably better off listening to meteorologists. Or, just flipping a coin.

Get Kim Kardashian's Hairstyle
Perhaps one of the biggest celebrities of the day only comes out once each year - but when he does, it's big news. Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog prognosticator, emerged from his burrow in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania, early on this Groundhog Day and did not see his shadow - meaning an early spring is on the way.
CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was reportedly attacked while covering protests in Egypt. ''The Hollywood Reporter'' says Cooper and his crew were surrounded by a pro-Mubarak mob as they filmed demonstrations, and Cooper was punched 10 times in the head. Reports say Cooper avoided serious injury and kept broadcasting from a nearby building's rooftop.
People Magazine says Lindsay Lohan's involved in a police investigation over a $2500 necklace that was stolen from a Venice, California, store last month. People says police got a search warrant for Lohan's home, but the necklace was returned before they executed it.
Halle Berry's custody case may be getting ugly. According to TMZ, Berry's ex, Gabriel Aubry, was verbally abusive to the actress, at one point calling her the N word. TMZ quotes a source as saying that Aubrey constantly demeaned Berry.

REFS
It's almost Groundhog Day! But how accurate is Punxsutawney Phil?
With cloudy skies forecast for western Pennsylvania on Tuesday morning, it's unlikely famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow when he pops out of his burrow, meaning he won't promptly rush back inside.
That's assuming he isn't freaked out by the blinding lights and overall hullabaloo.
According to legend, if Phil sees his shadow on Feb. 2, the scared groundhog returns to his burrow and the USA is in store for six more weeks of winter. But, if he doesn’t see his shadow, the country can expect warmer temperatures and an early spring.
Unfortunately, based on past weather data, there is no predictive skill for the groundhog during the most recent years of the analysis, according to a report released Friday by the National Centers for Environmental Information in Asheville, N.C.
Flipping a coin might be as accurate as Phil. Since 1988, the groundhog was right 13 times and wrong 15 times. In other words, only 13 times did the national average temperature for the remainder of February match what would be expected based on what the groundhog predicted.
Last year, the fuzzy rodent saw his shadow, so winter should have dragged on another six weeks. Phil received a mixed grade for 2015 — while the nation had a slightly below-average February, it had a warmer-than-average March.
Since 1887, the groundhog has seen his shadow 102 times to forecast a longer winter and not seen it 17 times to predict an early spring. (There is no record of the prediction for 10 times in the late 19th century.)
Although Phil is the most famous hog, other furry forecasters include West Virginia's French Creek Freddie, Georgia's Gen. Beauregard Lee, Ohio's Buckeye Chuck, North Carolina's Sir Wally Wally, Louisiana's Cajun Groundhog, Alabama's Smith Lake Jake and New York's Staten Island Chuck (full name: Charles G. Hogg).
Groundhog Day's origins lie in an ancient European celebration of Candlemas, which is a point midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
Superstition has it that fair weather predicted a stormy and cold second half to winter, as noted in this Old English saying:
If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again.
Jefferson County Pennsylvania
The PA Great Outdoors region is a big, beautiful part of Pennsylvania and home to Jefferson County. Punxsutawney Phil is the county's most famous resident and on February 2nd, Gobbler's Knob is the place to be! Punxsutawney offers year-round fun with Phil's Burrow, Groundhog Club Headquarters, and the Weather Discovery Center.
Brookville has a restored Victorian Main Street and a trail head for the Redbank Valley Trail. The Jefferson County History Center has many interesting exhibits including the Twyford car and a model railroad. Nearby, Scripture Rocks Park features over 70 engraved large boulders.
Clear Creek State Park is a rare gem in the deep valley on the banks of the Clarion River. Brockway has a trail head for the Clarion-Little Toby Trail and two launches give paddlers access to the Little Toby Creek. The town also hosts an annual Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration.

The handlers of Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, said the furry rodent has predicted six more weeks of winter after seeing his shadow at dawn Thursday.
The top hat-wearing members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle reveal Phil's forecast every Feb. 2, based on a German legend surrounding Candlemas. The legend says if a furry rodent casts a shadow that day, winter continues. If not, spring comes early.
In reality, Phil's prediction is decided ahead of time by the group on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill just outside Punxsutawney about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Thousands of people gathered overnight to await the forecast.
Records dating to 1887 show Phil has now predicted more winter 103 times while forecasting an early spring just 18 times - including last year. There are no records for the remaining years.

U.S. Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Predicts Six More Weeks of Winter
Punxsutawney Phil, the American groundhog famous for his weather predictions, saw his shadow after emerging from his burrow atop Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania on Monday, forecasting six more weeks of winter.
Phil's prediction came at about 7:25 a.m. EST in the Western Pennsylvania borough of Punxsutawney, where some in his audience chanted six more weeks, six more weeks as they waited.
Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow, North America will experience six more weeks of winter and if he does not, spring will come early.
Six more weeks of winter means more potential for snow days so I am not exactly heartbroken, said Robin Amador, 39, an educator from Lorain, Ohio. I could kiss that little guy for that.

Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil,
Today, Feb. 2, is Groundhog Day! See all the pictures from the annual ceremony where Punxsutawney Phil crawled out of his burrow and predicted the weather! After the hellish week we endured with the Polar Vortex, it seems like the question on everyone’s mind is “will we ever be warm again?” Luckily, Punxsutawney Phil is here to answer that! The infamous groundhog emerged from his burrow at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania at sunrise on Feb. 2 to predict whether we’ll be seeing spring soon or if we’ll have to wait to get rid of winter. Phil DID NOT see his shadow, so luckily we’ll have an early spring! This is the 133rd year where Phil predicted the weather – the ceremony has taken place annually since 1886. Yes, that is a long time for a groundhog to live, but there’s a legend as to how Phil keeps coming around year after year. He drinks an “elixir of life” that adds another seven years to his life with every sip, ensuring that he’ll be around to make predictions for years to come! Thousands of people congregated near Phil’s burrow – and even more watched live online – to see what the groundhog decided. In case you didn’t know, there’s a procedure that occurs to determine his prediction. If Phil sees his shadow, he’ll run back into the burrow, meaning we’ll have six more weeks of winter. But if he sticks around and hangs out outside, that means spring is coming! He then shares his prediction with his Inner Circle, and its members translate the information for the attendees at the Groundhog Day Picnic (and the rest of us too, of course). He typically sees his shadow, though. He’s only ever predicted an early spring 18 times (this year makes 19!) Want to see pics from the ceremony? Then get clicking through the gallery above! Happy Groundhog Day!
Friendly ground squirrels come above ground for treats
Visiting a provincial park called E.C Manning in British Columbia, Brent and Elsa wanted to see if the tradition of Groundhog Day was going to hold true. The Groundhog Day celebration is a tradition that says that if a hibernating animal, generally following a groundhog, casts a shadow on February 2, winter and cold weather will last another six weeks. Taking along a few vegetable snacks for the furry friends made for some fun. Punxsutawney Phil is the name of a groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. In the area of Punxsutawney Phil’s temporary burrow there is an annual festive ceremony of food and music awaiting Phil to emerge from his burrow. In anticipation of him coming from below ground, to whether he sees his shadow or not, locals gather for some great fun. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, he has predicted six more weeks of winter-like weather. If Phil does not see his shadow, he has predicted an ''early spring''. In Canada and the United States, the Groundhog Day celebration has been celebrated since 1887. Punxsutawney Phil became an international celebrity thanks to the 1993 movie Groundhog Day which starred Bill Murray. During the rest of the year before and after the Groundhog Day ceremony, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle, takes care of Phil at a specific club location. On this day that Brent and Elsa visited their furry ground squirrel friends the sun disappeared and snow began to fall. Becoming more involved in gathering snacks the ground squirrels forgot about checking for their shadow…on with six weeks more of cold weather.

Punxsutawney Phil has officially emerged from his burrow at Gobble’s Knob in Pennsylvania and made his prediction about whether or not we’ll have an early spring…or six more weeks of winter! The results are in! Punxsutawney Phil came out of hiding in his burrow on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day, and did not see his shadow! That means that he’s predicted that we’ll have an early spring this year! As always, thousands of people gathered at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to see what Phil would predict. The famous groundhog was surrounded by his inner circle, who were the first to hear Phil’s prediction and reiterated the news to the crowd, as well as thousands of people watching via live stream. The Groundhog Day legend states that if it is a clear day outside, Phil will see his shadow, and run back into his burrow out of fear. This means a longer winter is on the way. However, if it’s cloudy outside and Phil doesn’t see his shadow, he’ll want to stay outside, which means spring is coming! Every few years, Phil drinks from the ‘elixir of life,’ which gives him seven more years of life so he can keep making his predictions, according to the ancient legend. The first official Groundhog Day ceremony took place in 1886. During the first few years of Groundhog Day events, Phil’s prediction was made in a private wooded area.
