Thank you for watching this ultimate Kenyan street food tour in Nairobi! I met up with my friend James who took me around to a few of his favorite spots to eat.
Kawangware, Nairobi, Kenya
Here's most of the food we tried on this amazing tour of Nairobi:
Ann Restaurant - Dagoretti Corner - This small street food stall on Dagoretti Corner in Nairobi serves all sorts of Kenyan / East African foods. Their chapatis are especially good, and their Lake Victoria sardines fried with tomatoes.
Chapati
Dagaa - Lake Victoria sardine
Matumbo - stomach stew
Githeri - beans and maize
The guy sitting across the table - “you should not eat beans and sardines together, or you’ll have gas.”
Total bill - 1,050 KES ($10.39) - we paid for 4 or 5 guys eating there
Stomach Clinix - This was the best food stop of the day, a neighborhood meat shop that James took me to that specializes in cow head soup. The grilled tongue was also spectacular, but the soup was the best.
Total price - 200 KES ($1.98)
Dagoretti Market - After the meat, we took a walk over to Dagoretti Market. After browsing around for a while, we stopped for another plate of mixed Kenyan food, mostly dengu, which are mung beans. It was simple, but quite good.
Dengu - mung beans
Total price - 300 KES ($2.97)
Unity Cafe Hotel - We met up with some of James' friend in Kawangware, and went to eat across the street from their shoe shop. The mandazi mix was the highlight of this Kenyan meal.
Total price - 600 KES ($5.94) for all
Cow foot fry - Next we headed over to Oscar who makes cow food soup, fry and boil. He was a very friendly man, and showed me his entire process of making cow foot soup. It was delicious!
Total price - 450 KES ($4.45)
Kenyan street food - To end this Kenyan street food tour of Nairobi we had to eat one of the ultimate Kenyan fast food meat treats. You'll see these types of grills all over the streets in the late afternoon throughout Nairobi. You just choose what you want, it's cut on the chopping board, and you stand and eat.
Esophagus
Intestines
Mutura - minced meat sausage
Mutura - blood sausage
Udder
Total price - 200 KES ($1.97)
Thank you for watching this ultimate Nairobi street food tour!

Inside Africa's Biggest Slum (Kibera) - Nairobi, Kenya
Nairobi (Kenya) is a very complex, diverse city. The rich are REALLY rich, and the poor are REALLY poor.
Today I took a trip to a district in Nairobi called Kibera, which is considered to be the biggest urban slum in Africa. More than 1 million people live within 2 square kilometers.
I don't know how many videos it will take me to spread this message, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that people in impoverished areas are significantly happier than the wealthy.
And overall, I've found Kenyan people to be the most heart warming, welcoming and friendly people in Africa (along with Malawians!) Have I mentioned that I love Nairobi?!

Kenyan Street Food - HUGE GRILLED MEAT (Nyama Choma) Tour in Nairobi, Kenya | African Food!
►Check out Gikosh - Aviation:
►SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week:
►T-shirts and caps available now:
Nyama choma, or grilled meat, is one of the favorite things to eat in Kenya. It can be many different types of meat, and usually the meat is slow roasted, sliced in front of you on your table, and served with salt, chilies, and kachumbari. In this video we’re taking you on a tour of some of the best nyama choma in Nairobi, Kenya.
Khan has a been a great friend of mine for many years in Nairobi, Kenya. And he recently started Gikosh, an aviation art company. You can check out their stuff on and
We decided to go on an ultimate Nairobi street food nyama choma (roasted meat tour) of Nairobi, but with a twist. Some of his carpenters and welders dressed in their Gikosh costumes for the occasion, and we first set off the walk about Gikomba Market in Nairobi.
After walking around the market for a while, we stopped at a small spot to eat our first grilled meat - nyama choma. They served grilled beef, and so we ordered a few kgs to snack on. It was overall quite good, and a nice friendly environment.
Total price - 1,000 KES ($9.86)
Kenyatta Market - For many years, Kenyatta Market has been one of my go to places for ready made nyama choma in Nairobi. They always have a huge selection that’s ready to eat when you arrive. The only thing that can be a bit hectic is when all the meat stalls are all trying to get your business at once. Some of the vendors even fight each other for your business. We eventually chose a stall, and ordered up a huge amount of meat. We got a mixed selection, but mostly goat, and a chicken, plus a bunch of Kenyan food side dishes.
Total price - 700 KES ($6.90) per kg
Dagoretti Corner - Final stop on this Kenyan food nyama choma tour was at
Dagoretti Corner and specifically Carol Smart Butchery. This is where we got husted for some meat! A few of the butchers from the slaughterhouse followed us to a nyama choma spot, chose some meat, and sat down to eat with us. But I was totally ok with eat, and they were hilarious and very entertaining!
Total price - 2,000 KES ($19.72)

Experience Kenya: A day in Nairobi
Ultra-modern skyscrapers, chic cocktail bars, and hip hotels. No, we’re not talking about London or New York — we’re actually describing Kenya’s quirky and cosmopolitan capital: Nairobi. That’s right — this city is full of surprises, and you’ll be amazed from the get-go when you visit. If you’re planning an adventure through Kenya, there’s a good chance your trip will begin and end in this exciting city, so follow along and get ready to be wowed — this is what it’s like to travel in Nairobi.
This city is so much more than just a gateway to Kenya’s wilderness; Nairobi is one of the most modern and fastest growing places on the continent, boasting a vibrant metropolitan atmosphere and a buzzing food and restaurant scene. Spend some time here and you’ll find traditional marketplaces alongside world-class hotels, edgy cocktail bars, and international restaurants. It’s the type of place where you can practice your haggling skills and stock up on souvenirs at a Masai market by day, and tuck into tacos, gourmet burgers, or traditional Kenyan cuisine by night. And speaking of food, this city is becoming increasingly known for its culinary offerings, with new cafes and restaurants popping up constantly. If you’re a foodie, you’re in for a real treat!
There’s no doubt about it: Kenya’s national parks are one of the country’s biggest draws, but Nairobi has its fair share of wildlife-centric attractions to explore as well! And the best part? You can get up close and personal with all sorts of exotic animals without leaving the confines of the city! David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust — a sanctuary for orphaned elephants and black rhinos — offers the perfect introductory to Kenya’s incredible wildlife. On a visit here, you can learn all about elephant conservation and meet and feed the adorable baby pachyderms.
Pleasantly surprised by all that Nairobi has to offer? We thought you might be! If you can’t wait any longer to start planning your trip to Kenya, head over to TourRadar to check out this itinerary and a range of others just like it!

Kenya, officially the Republic of Kenya, is a sovereign state in East Africa. The capital and largest city is Nairobi. Kenya lies on the equator with the Indian Ocean to the south-east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309 km2 (224,445 sq mi) and has a population of about 44 million in July 2012.
The country is named after Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa.
Mount Kenya was originally referred to as Mt. Kirinyaga by the indigenous people. Kirinyaga or Kerenyaga, meaning 'mountain of whiteness' because of its snow capped peak; The name was subsequently changed to Mt. Kenya because of the inability of the British to pronounce Kirinyaga correctly.
The country has a warm and humid climate along its Indian Ocean coastline, with wildlife-rich savannah grasslands inland towards the capital. Nairobi has a cool climate that gets colder approaching Mount Kenya, which has three permanently snow-capped peaks. Further inland there is a warm and humid climate around Lake Victoria, and temperate forested and hilly areas in the western region.
The northeastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid areas with near-desert landscapes. Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh-water lake and the world's largest tropical lake, is situated to the southwest and is shared with Uganda and Tanzania. Kenya is famous for its safaris and diverse wildlife reserves and national parks such as the East and West Tsavo National Park, the Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. There are several world heritage sites such as Lamu, and world renowned beaches such as Kilifi where international yachting competitions are held each year.
The African Great Lakes region, of which Kenya is a part, has been inhabited by humans since the Lower Paleolithic period. The Bantu expansion reached the area from West-Central Africa by the first millennium AD, and the borders of the modern state comprise the crossroads of the Niger-Congo, Nilo-Saharan and Afro-Asiatic ethno-linguistic areas of the continent, making Kenya a multi-cultural country.
European and Arab presence in Mombasa dates to the Early Modern period, but European exploration of the interior began only in the 19th century. The British Empire established the East Africa Protectorate in 1895, known from 1920 as the Kenya Colony. The Republic of Kenya became independent in December 1963. Following a referendum in August 2010 and adoption of a new constitution, Kenya is now divided into 47 semi-autonomous counties, governed by elected governors.
The capital, Nairobi, is a regional commercial hub. The economy of Kenya is the largest by GDP in East and Central Africa. Agriculture is a major employer and the country traditionally exports tea and coffee, and more recently fresh flowers to Europe. The service industry is a major economic driver. Kenya is a member of the East African Community.
