Playing for Philharmonie de Paris est une idée originale de Société Générale, fruit d’une rencontre inédite entre deux mondes habituellement éloignés : celui de la musique et celui de l’entreprise. Sa quatrième édition prend cette année une nouvelle dimension avec trois concerts, les 8, 9 et 10 décembre. Durant ces trois soirées, plus de 350 instrumentistes et choristes amateurs, collaborateurs du groupe Société Générale en France, en Roumanie et au Sénégal, vont mêler leurs instruments et leurs voix à ceux de l’orchestre Les Siècles, et seront rejoints par un groupe d’enfants Démos. Le concert du 9 décembre, inscrit au programme annuel de la Philharmonie de Paris et ouvert au grand public, sera le premier donné dans la Grande Salle Pierre Boulez par les salariés d’une même entreprise.
Cette aventure collective s’inscrit dans un partenariat au long cours avec l’orchestre Les Siècles, dont Société Générale est le mécène principal depuis 2010. Renouvelant les codes du mécénat d’entreprise, un lien particulier, consolidé au fil des années, unit Société Générale à cette formation et à son fondateur, François-Xavier
Roth, l’un des chefs les plus charismatiques et entreprenants de sa génération.
Ce soir, par un désir d’engagement partagé, les musiciens amateurs de Playing for Philharmonie vont se hisser au niveau d’exigence d’un orchestre professionnel.
Ils ont répété pendant des mois avec leurs partenaires des Siècles, jusqu’à ne faire plus qu’un: un même ensemble emporté par le souffle de la musique.
Par son caractère innovant, une telle rencontre avait vocation à être accueillie par la Philharmonie de Paris, dont l’une des missions est d’ouvrir la musique classique à de nouvelles formes d’expression et à de nouveaux publics. Le groupe Société Générale la soutient depuis son ouverture. Il est aussi à ses côtés pour accompagner l’essor des orchestres d’enfants Démos, qui réinventent la notion d’éducation musicale en proposant aux enfants des quartiers populaires de pratiquer la musique classique en orchestre, en conjuguant là encore plaisir du jeu et exigence. Playing for Philharmonie accueille une vingtaine d’entre eux pour la première fois cette année. Lors du concert du 9 décembre, l’intégralité de la recette sera versée au bénéfice des orchestres d’enfants Démos, et Société Générale abondera chaque place achetée d’un montant équivalent.

The Philharmonie de Paris is a cultural institution in Paris, France which combine spaces all dedicated to music. It is composed of concert halls, exhibition spaces, rehearsal rooms, educational services, restaurant and bars. The main buildings are all located in the Parc de la Villette at the northeastern edge of Paris in the 19th arrondissement. At the core of this set of spaces is the symphonic concert hall of 2,400 seats designed by Jean Nouvel and opened in January 2015. Its construction had been postponed for about twenty years to complete the current musical institution la Cité de la Musique designed by Christian de Portzamparc and opened since 1995. Mainly dedicated to symphonic concerts, the Philharmonie de Paris also present other forms of music such as jazz and world music.
The project was announced on 6 March 2006, by the Minister of Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, and the Director of the Cité de la musique and of the Salle Pleyel, Laurent Bayle, during a press conference on the reopening of the Salle Pleyel, now linked with the Cité de la Musique. In 2007, Jean Nouvel won the design competition for the auditorium. He brought in Brigitte Métra as his partner, along with Marshall Day Acoustics (room acoustics design), Nagata Acoustics (peer-review and scale model study) and dUCKS Scéno (scenography).
The hall opened on 14 January 2015, with a performance by the Orchestre de Paris of Faure's Requiem, conducted by Paavo Järvi, played to honor the victims of the Charlie Hebdo shootings which had taken place in the city a week earlier. It is located in the Parc de la Villette in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. This sector of the city was also the home of the two brothers who carried out these killings. The opening concert was attended by French President François Hollande, but boycotted by the architect.
Designed by Jean Nouvel, the Philharmonie 1 is an organic design with innovative forms rising like a hill within the Parc de la Villette. Aluminium panels in a basketweave design swirl tightly around the structure and contrast with the rest of its matte exterior. The exterior features the images of 340,000 birds etched into the surface in seven different shapes and four shades ranging from light grey to black to symbolize a grand take-off. The rooftop, 37 metres high, will be open to the public and will give visitors an expansive view of the city blending into the suburbs.
The building houses the site's largest concert hall, called the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez. The design of the auditorium follows the model pioneered by the Berlin Philharmonie to intensify the feeling of intimacy between the performers and their audience. Indeed, the auditorium adapted the way the 2400 seats are distributed, between the parterre, behind the stage and on floating balconies around the central stage. The farthest spectator is only 32 metres from the conductor (compared to 40 or 50 metres in most large symphony halls). The hall's enveloping configuration is designed to immerse the spectator in the music. Its walls are composed of moving panels designed to redirect the sound in multiple directions. These panels alternate with sound absorbing surfaces, specially treated to increase reflection and reverberation, the sound resonates throughout the vast acoustic volume (30,500 cubic metres).The tiers and parterre seating are retractable, offering an increased capacity of 3,650 people for events such as amplified concerts that require special configurations.
A number of spaces for use by musicians are situated around the hall, including dressing rooms but also rehearsal rooms. In all, the hall is encircled by five rehearsal rooms for various ensembles and ten chamber music studios. An entire section of the building is occupied by an 1,800-square-metre (19,000 sq ft) educational centre. With various rooms designed for collective practice, it will host workshop cycles for many groups. The site also boasts an 800-square-metre (8,600 sq ft) exhibition space, a conference hall and two restaurants.

The Philharmonie de Paris encompasses the new building designed by Jean Nouvel and the current Cité de la musique. Operating as a whole, this major music complex will have the resources to combine all approaches to music – helping update the offering of artistic, educational and cultural events for today’s audiences, both locally and nationwide. The Cité de la musique will remain in its current building, designed by Christian de Portzamparc, but as an institution will undergo fundamental changes. As from January 2015, it will no longer be known as the Cité de la musique, ultimately being dissolved in its current form in order to be reborn as an integral part of the Philharmonie de Paris.
Concretely, once the project is complete, the Philharmonie de Paris will operate between two buildings:
• “Philharmonie 1”, the new building designed by Jean Nouvel, opened in January 2015, and
• “Philharmonie 2”, the building that has housed the Cité de la musique for the past twenty years.
The artistic pillars of this new philharmonic framework are the Orchestre de Paris (the resident orchestra), the Ensemble Intercontemporain (the resident ensemble), and three associate ensembles – the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France and Les Arts Florissants.
With the Philharmonie de Paris, Jean Nouvel has delivered innovative architecture that fits gracefully into its setting within the Parc de la Villette – at the edge of Paris proper and at the heart of a fast-growing metropolitan area. The Philharmonie de Paris is a truly innovative facility, and in more ways than one. First, from a strictly architectural perspective, the edifice created by Jean Nouvel is like nothing else in the urban landscape. The mineral building that rises up within the Parc de la Villette is not unlike a mountain, complete with a roof that visitors can walk on! In its dimensions as well as its materials (cast aluminium and shiny stainless steel facades), it wears it modernity proudly. Its location in northeast Paris makes a bold statement as well. The proximity to the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse, the Zénith and the Grande Halle make La Villette into something of a ‘music quarter’. Moreover, the connection to the city’s outskirts and suburbs encourages new audiences, from different generations and social backgrounds, to attend concerts. One of the project’s inspirers, the composer Pierre Boulez, could not have said it better when he called the Philharmonie ‘the Centre Pompidou of music’.
Standing 52 metres high, the Philharmonie is an unmissable landmark in northeast Paris. The screen-wall that towers over the building creates a luminous ambiance, also serving as a spectacular announcement board for upcoming programmes and concerts – a stunning display that calls the public (of all ages and interests) to venture inside the various spaces. The Philharmonie is also a beacon within the Parc de la Villette. But rather than attempting to dominate the site, the building fits naturally into the urban and architectural context, establishing a dialogue with the other architects who have left their mark there (Christian de Portzamparc who designed the Cité de la musique and the Conservatoire, and Bernard Tschumi with his famous ‘Folies’). Putting on exceptional concerts is only one aspect of the Philharmonie de Paris. With its rehearsal rooms, educational centre, exhibition space, restaurants and convivial setting within the Parc de la Villette, it has been designed as a true 'living space'. Bringing the public a fresh take on music requires not only rethinking the conventional concert system, but also encouraging musical practice and discovery. In this respect, the Philharmonie de Paris has an invaluable resource: twenty years of experience in educational programming. Since its creation in 1995, this is exactly what the Cité de la musique has done, organising activities for all segments of the population, with an emphasis on diversity in the perspectives explored, incorporating non-European cultures and popular forms. The Orchestre de Paris and the Ensemble intercontemporain have also developed a number of initiatives, such as concerts and shows for school groups and families. Drawing on this know-how and that of the associate ensembles, the Philharmonie is equipped to reach out to all music lovers, in the broadest sense of the term. Not stopping at the magic of music, the Philharmonie has been designed as a true ‘living space’ where artists and audiences would intermingle. Jean Nouvel has artfully laid out all of the annexes. Spectators can choose between a garden-level café, a sixth-floor restaurant with panoramic views, and the bars at various points around the concert hall. They can also stroll through the foyers encircling the main auditorium.
