Phillip Island is an Australian island located about 140 km (87 mi) south-southeast from Melbourne, Victoria. Named after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, Phillip Island forms a natural breakwater for the shallow waters of Western Port. It is 26 km (16 mi) long and 9 km (5.6 mi) wide, with an area of about 100 km2 (39 sq mi).[1] It has 97 km (60 mi) of coastline and is part of the Bass Coast Shire.
A 640 m (2,100 ft) concrete bridge (originally a wooden bridge) connects the mainland town San Remo with the island town Newhaven.[1] In the 2011 census the island's permanent population was 9,406,[2] compared to 7,071 in 2001.[3] During the summer, the population swells to 40,000. 60% of the island is farmland devoted to grazing of sheep and cattle. Churchill Island and the area around it served as the location for the 1977 Australian film Summerfield.
Phillip Island is a tourist destination visited by 3.5 million people annually.[1] The Penguin Parade at Phillip Island Nature Park, in which Little Penguins come ashore in groups, attracts visitors from all over the world. They come to see one of the few areas where this species of penguin can be seen.
The island is recognised as having some of the most consistently reliable and varied surf conditions in the country. The island has hosted various surf events in the past, such as the Rip Curl Pro in 2005 and the Roxy Pro Women's Surfing Festival.
On New Year's Eve the island hosts the Pyramid Rock Festival. Other events include the Churchill Island Working Horse and Pioneer Festival.

Beach Park Tourist Caravan Park - Top Tourist Parks - Discover Downunder
In this video Tim and Brooke from Discover Downunder visit the very appropriately named Beach Park Tourist Caravan Park near Cowes on Phillip Island in Victoria.
We challenge you to find a holiday park closer to a beach than this one. If it were any closer, it would be in the water!
Set in beautiful and quiet leafy surrounds, Beach Park Tourist Caravan Park features a heated swimming pool, a playground, two BBQ areas and a massive function and games room.
The park's Beachfront Bungalows are the pick of the accommodation options, but there are also Island Bungalows, lots of other cabins and of course, plenty of caravan sites.
Phillip Island is one of Victoria's most popular tourist destinations with its spectacular surf beaches, the world famous fairy penguins and the Moto Grand Prix which takes over the island each October.

Phillip Island, Victoria
Phillip Island is a great destination for a family getaway. Under two hours drive from Melbourne, it offers diverse accommodation to choose from, wildlife experiences, and plenty of opportunities to get into the water.
San Remo is the last town before leaving the mainland and the gateway to Phillip Island. Drop into the famous local fishing co-op to pick up a fresh lobster and watch the local pelicans descend on the San Remo wharf for their 11.30am daily feed.
The first town on the island is the small fishing village of Newhaven -- a popular place for fishing from the pier, surfinf one of the best surf beaches in Victoria, walking along the beautiful Cape Woolamai or exploring nearby historic Churchill Island.
On the south-east tip of the island is the quiet village of Rhyll. Wander through the nearby Koala Conservation Centre and Woodland to see koalas at close range or view birds as you walk through the famous wetlands at Rhyll Inlet.
Cowes, the main commercial centre on Phillip Island, has a wealth of charming cafes and upmarket restaurants for visitors to enjoy. Take a wildlife cruise to the large fur seal colony on Seal Rocks or enjoy watching hundreds of Little Penguins returning to their burrows at the nightly Penguin Parade at nearby Summerland Beach.
Please take me to Australia - find photos, videos, accommodation, sightseeing, tours, car rentals, package holidays and attractions around Australia. A total solution for your holiday, vacation or travel plans.
