Phillips Academy in Andover is the best high school in America
We visited Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts to see what makes it the best high school in America. The school is often confused with Phillips Exeter. There are 1,154 students on Andover's campus. Tuition for students living on campus is $53,900. Tuition for day students is $41,900. Andover has a need-blind admissions policy which means they accept students based on merit, not wealth. There are 44 states and 44 countries represented in the current student body. Following is a transcript of the video.
Jenny Elliott: Folks who are not so close to Andover or who haven’t experienced something like this will say, “you were sent to boarding school.” And, a sense of agency for kids to feel like, “I wasn’t sent anywhere. I wasn’t sent by my parents. I chose to go to boarding school.”
David Tsai: I’m a senior from Natick, Massachusetts. I have attended Andover for four years. And it is a distinct pleasure of mine to bring all of you around on what I believe is the best school in the world.
The most important thing you learn on this campus is how every single faculty member and every single student, when they are walking on, these are called the paths, they’re smiling. They’re clearly enjoying themselves at this school.
I believe that the boarding experience is so much more beneficial to the student because they get to live on their own and they get to experience high school as most people experience their college years.
John Palfrey: What we’re trying to accomplish here is to be absolutely excellent in the classic ways of academics, of sports, of arts, of community engagement — all of those things — while also really focusing on the young person in their wholeness and to make sure that we encourage kids to have wellness as central to their experience. To make sure they’re getting sleep, to make sure that they’re eating well, to make sure they’re exercising. All of those things I think go together with this idea of excellence. And I think that that combination of things is working really well right now.
Elliott: We don’t post grade point averages. We try to take some very specific steps not to elevate competition in those ways. We do a lot of collaborative work in classes, we do a lot of collaborative work on teams, we do a lot of collaborative work outside — and we do, in terms of our leadership positions for students, there are many positions where there’s actually co-presidents or there are co-leaders to send a clear message to our kids — collaboration is a skill that you’re going to need to develop well in order to be able to move forward here with success.
Tsai: Mental health here is one of the most important things on campus because the only way for you to show your affection for someone, to love someone else, to build connections and build bonds, is to firstly love yourself.
Palfrey: The most distinctive thing about Andover’s program is the need-blind admissions policy in our 11th year. How can you have a morally responsible high school with a $1 billion endowment? It’s when you actually do admit kids solely on the basis of their admission criteria that have nothing to do with wealth.
Tsai: I am so happy that I made the decision to come here because there is so clearly a universal commitment to being loved and to love that you don’t find at any other school.

Phillips Exeter Choir and Orchestra Debut in Oxford on 8 March
Phillips Exeter Academy Concert Choir is a 45-voice mixed chorus, performing a wide range of choral music from the 16-century through to contemporary choral works. Directed by Kristopher Johnson, the choir is the school’s leading choral ensemble with a choral body representative of the various states and countries found at the school. In the past few years, the choir has performed premieres of new creations by student and alumni composers, sung choral masterpieces with professional orchestras and soloists and undertaken service-oriented tours in the southwest United States. The choir has received coaching from artists such as New York Polyphony, Skylark Ensemble, Blue Heron and Roomful of Teeth.
Phillips Exeter Academy Chamber Orchestra is one of the Academy’s premier instrumental ensembles, presenting a range of classical, romantic and modern works. Under the baton of Rohan Smith, the orchestra has collaborated and performed with the Grammy-nominated string ensemble A Far Cry and received coaching from conductor Michael Barrett.
The orchestra and choir are often heard in collaboration, presenting the great choral works including Mozart’s Requiem and C-minor Mass, Faure’s Requiem and Handel’s Chandos Anthems. Phillips Exeter Academy Concert Choir has toured extensively, most recently visiting Vietnam and Hong Kong, Québec and California.
March 2019 will mark the Phillips Exeter Academy’s first tour to the United Kingdom, presented by Classical Movements.

CNN Tries to Associate Yang with White Nationalists
Who Is Andrew Yang?
Andrew Yang has been a mostly unrecognized name until recently when he has appeared on shows such as MSNBC, FOX News, CNN, and THe Joe Rogan Experience. Although he is certainly the most unique candidate for president in 2020, due to his pointed and data-driven policies, his background is often glossed over. Today, we're going to take an in depth look at the politician, entrepreneur, and problem solver Andrew Yang.
Yang was born on January 13, 1975, which will make him 45 at the 2020 election. He was born in Schenectady, NY, to immigrant parents from Taiwan. His parents met while in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. His Father most likely influenced Andrew’s entrepreneurial mindset, as he worked in research at IGM and General Electric with a Physics doctorate, and ended his career with 69 patents to his name.
Yang attended the Phillips Exeter Academy, a boarding school in New Hampshire, and graduated in 1992. Upon graduation, Andrew attended Brown university, and received a BS in economics. He then went on to graduate from Columbia Law School.
Yang had a short-lived career in Law working at Davis-Polk and Wardwell for only a year before quitting and starting his own philanthropist company, Stargiving.com, a website intended to be for celebrity philanthropist fund raising. Although somewhat of a success, the company folded after a year of operation in 2001. Afterwards, Yang joined a healthcare software startup, MMF Systems, and served as its vice president for 4 years.
In 2006, Yang was asked by another friend and entrepreneur, Zeke Vanderhoek, to become CEO of Manhattan Prep, a graduate Management admission test company. The company prospered under Yang’s supervision, eventually expanding from 5 to 69 locations, and was acquired by Kaplan in 2009. Yang resigned as the company’s president in 2012, to start his most notable company, Venture for America.
Yang founded Venture for America in 2011 with the mission to create economic opportunity in American cities by mobilizing the next generation of entrepreneurs and equipping them with the skills and resources they need to create jobs as usual, a very well thought out and lengthy mission statement.
The strategy of VFA was to recruit top college graduates around the country and enroll them in a 2 year fellowship program, in which they would work and apprentice at promising startups in developing cities across the United States.Venture for America’s primary goal is to prevent all talented graduates from ending up in the same cities and essentially creating a void of startups at smaller, less wealthy locations, as detailed in Yang’s book: Smart People Should Build Things.
By 2011, VFA grew to having over $6 million in annual operating budget, and expanded access to over 20 major US cities. Yang stepped down from his position of CEO in March of 2017.
On november 6, 2017, Yang filed his candidacy for President of the United states for the 2020 election with the federal election commission, with the slogan “Humanity First”. The major focus of his campaign is the response to the massive effect automation will have on working class people, as detailed in Yang’s recent book: The War on Normal People. His most well known and controversial proposal is the Freedom Dividend, a universal basic income of $1000 a month for every adult in the United States, as he sees it as a way to spread the bounty of automation to all people.
On march 11, 2019, Yang announced his campaign had received donations from 65,000 separate donors, meaning he qualifies for the first round of debates in the democratic primary in June and July of 2019. Yang has often been optimistic of the possibility of success in running against President Donald Trump, saying that he is certain he would beat Trump hands down. It will be exciting to see where this young and promising politician ends up.

Mark Zuckerberg is famous worldwide, for having developed 'Facebook', the most widely used social networking website. At a very young age, he was taught how to write computer programs by his father, and tutor David Newman. Childhood & Early Life
Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born to Edward, and his wife Karen, in the city of White Plains, New York, on May 14, 1984. Edward was a dentist, while Karen worked as a psychiatrist. The young boy was brought up in the village of Dobbs Ferry, along with siblings Randi, Arielle, and Donna.
He pursued his education from the 'Ardsley High School', New York, and later the 'Phillips Exeter Academy' in New Hampshire, where he exhibited flair for astronomy, mathematics, physics, English classical literature, foreign languages. He was also asked to lead the fencing team of the 'Phillips Exeter Academy'.
While in middle school, Mark was taught 'Atari BASIC Programming' by his father in the 1990s. Eventually software programmer David Newman began teaching the young boy everything about programming.
The talented young child was in high school when he enrolled with 'Mercy College', to pursue a course in software programming. During this time, he developed a software called 'ZuckNet' to create a communication network between the computers in his father's dental office and those at home.
Around the same time, he made a music player that was programmed to memorize a listener's music choices. The programme, named 'Synapse Media Player', was built under the banner of a company called 'Intelligent Media Group', and was posted to a news website, 'Slashdot'.

Career
The budding software developer began attending the 'Harvard University', majoring in psychology and computer science. During his days at the university, he built programmes titled 'CourseMatch' and 'Facemash'. While 'CourseMatch' helped students select their courses and decide on study groups, 'FaceMash' was meant for fun, allowing students to choose the best face among a selection of photos.
In the next semester, in 2004, Mark launched a new website called 'Thefacebook.com'. He created the social networking site that along with friends Chris Hughes, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Dustin Moskovitz.
He was accused of having stolen the ideas of senior students, Divya Narendra, and twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who had planned on a social media site called ‘The Harvard Connection’. As a settlement to the lawsuit, Zuckerberg had to give the three seniors Facebook shares worth 300 million dollars.
Soon, Zuckerberg quit college, and began working on his site in a new office at Palo Alto, California. In 2004, along with his friends, he introduced 'Wirehog', a file sharing program, as a competition to fellow Harvard student, Wayne Chang's 'i2hub'.
In 2005, 'Accel Partners', a company dealing in growth equities, funded 'Facebook' with 12.7 million dollars. Two years later, Mark launched 'Facebook Platform' to enable software developers to use 'Facebook' to build other applications.

The United States Invitational Young Physicists Tournament (USIYPT) is an annual physics research and debate tournament for high school students, held the last weekend in January. School-based teams of four students investigate several undergraduate-level research problems in preparation for the tournament. The competition itself consists of physics fights, student-led debates over the quality of each team's solution. Teams are judged on their own solutions to the problems and on their ability to engage in evaluation and discussion of other teams' solutions. Phillips Exeter Academy won their second straight championship in 2019. The Harker School of San Jose, California has earned three championships, the most of any school. The 2020 tournament will be held at Phillips Exeter Academy on February 8-9.
