Philosophers Walk (Philosophenweg) in Heidelberg, Germany
So many things to do in beautiful Heidelberg, Germany and one of them was doing the famous Philosphers Walk (or Way as some call it) - Philosophenweg, in German. It is a bit strenous at first, since you start at the foot of the old bridge (Altebrucke) by the Neckar River and take some winding steps quite a ways up. But, it is all worth it, for lovely views along the way and especially those from the top. Many famous poets, philosphers and writers have walked this path for hundreds of years (including Mark Twain who wrote about it in A Tramp Abroad), along with everyday students from the University of Heidelberg.
One of the interesting sights we saw near the top was a Bismark Monument - apparently these are all over Europe, not just Germany, and were a tribute to Otto von Bismark, first chancellor of the old Third Reich.
Philosophers Walk, Heidelberg, Germany

One of your best activities while visiting Heidelberg, Germany is taking a stroll on the famous Philosophers Walk. It’s up on the hill and gives you a grand view looking down at Heidelberg. You can do this anytime of day but in the afternoon you will get the best lighting, shining down on the red tile rooftops of the city.
It is a green and pleasant path that will bring you to an observation terrace with one of the world’s most beautiful views: the fairy-tale old city on a river with its brooding castle above, tinted in earthy hues, with clay tile roofs and rosy-colored stone walls, especially vivid late in the day.

Places to see in ( Heidelberg - Germany ) Philosophers' Way
The name Philosophers' Walk can be traced to the fact that Heidelberg's university professors and philosophers found this path a congenial place where they could talk seriously and contemplate while enjoying the charming view of the Neckar.
This walkway starts just above the Old Bridge opposite the Old Town and cuts steeply through terraced vineyards until it reaches the woods, where it crosses the Philosophenweg. It is partly enclosed by bushes and trees, as well as some lovely vineyards, but there are several viewing platforms for terrific views of the city.
This view of the town inspired also the poets Eichendorff and Hoelderlin on their walks to write their poems. Among the attractions of this now world-famous walk are the Eichendorff Stone, a sandstone stele with a bronze relief of the poet, and the Merian-Kanzel, a sandstone platform from where in 1620 Matthaeus Merian immortalized Heidelberg in an engraving. The Hoelderlin-Anlage, an area at the eastern end of the Philosophers' Way dedicated to the poet Hoelderlin, pays tribute to his ode to Heidelberg Lang lieb ich dich schon... (Long have I loved you...)
Even today, this world-famous path offers new sights and insights. Enjoy a beautiful view of Heidelberg and a climate that reminds you of the Italian Tuscany. Many sub-tropical plants flourish in the Philosophengaertchen. The temperate climate is perfect for Japanese cherries, cypresses, lemons, bamboos, rhododendrons, gingko and yucca trees, and several other plants from the Mediterranean, North Africa and Asia.

Philosophers' Walk - Heidelberg - Germany

1 hour hike on the so called “Philosopher´s Path”, which is on the opposite river side of the old city across the river. Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany, more than 600 years old. And many famous philosophers studied there and they used to walk here.
Starting point of this very nice walk is near the Theodor Heuss Bridge, downstream the old city. you cross the river, keep right and walk up through old houses back up to the forest rim, always into the direction of the old city. The winding walking path goes up and provides the best Heidelberg view on the river, the old city, the castle and mountains. There are steps that bring you down the old bridge and you come back to the old city.

Michael Rood sends greetings to the German speaking saints scattered along the way on his European winter itinerary. Jessica Rood provides the colorful translation and the beauty to this otherwise dreary, mist fogged day in Heidelberg as the two of them prepare to ascend the mountainside to the Castle and into the museum which documents the development of modern Pharmakia by which the merchants of Babylon control the nations in the waning days of their tyranical rule of planet earth,

Old Town
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
