Tamao Mountain Zoological Garden & Wildlife Rescue Center at Takeo Province
If you plan a trip on the weekend to somewhere around Phnom Penh city, I suggest this place called Phnom Tamao Zoological garden and wildlife rescue center. It's just 40km (25miles) south of Phnom Penh city. If we travel straight from Phnom Penh city on National road 2, it will take around 1hour or you could drive on Chamkar Doing street (St. 217) and continue on National road 2 to Phnom Tamao Zoo, it will take around 1hour as well. Tamao Mountain Zoo and Resort is located at Khsach Lob village, Tro Peang Sap Commune, Bati district, Takeo province, Cambodia, Southeast Asia. The zoo open to public since 1995. The land area covered 6,000 acres with up to 1200 number of animals and up to 100 of animal species. I travel by motorcycle to this place and paid 3000riel (USD0.75) for the entrance fee. In this video, there's aerial view of the zoo and resort area. You can see how Phnom Tamao Zoo and resort look like from the sky.

Lucky is one of the four elephants at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC) quite enjoys performing – she likes showing off and receives titbits of food for doing so!
These four elephants are ambassadors for their species heres. One elephant named Chhouk disabled young male elephant rescued from an elegal trap in the forest in Cambodia. Lucky, Chhouk, Sakor and Jamran are well known and much loved.
The trainnig by Wildlife Alliance well organized and methods the elephants using reward-based, positive reinforcement training – they receive small food rewards if they do what we require. All that happens if they do not comply is they do not receive the reward. Our elephants are never beaten or abused in any way.
During the elephant shows Lucky performs some simple actions – she lifts her feet, enabling us to check the soles, she kicks a football, catches a stick. This attracts an audience and enables our head keeper, Try Sitheng, to inform them of the importance of conserving elephants, wildlife and the forests.
Sitheng also delivers a message about our training methods, which differ greatly to those used at other zoos in Cambodia and elsewhere in the region, where beatings and extreme cruelty is used to make elephants and other animals “perform”. These antiquated methods are cruel, unnecessary and outdated.
Developing countries experience different problems to the ones we may be familiar with in our own. Said Mr. Nick Marx(Wildlife Programs Director), they must adapt our approaches and put to our advantage aspects our culture finds less acceptable and which we may prefer not to be involved with. He continue that I am happy that Lucky, our much loved and thoroughly spoilt elephant, might assist in disseminating a message of conservation to Cambodian people. I am also glad that she can help in informing her audience that the scars and cruelty experienced by others of her kind in Cambodia and elsewhere are unnecessary, inexcusable and will hopefully soon be a thing of the past.
Rescued Binturong at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
This is a binturong! Think of a mixture of an opossum and a ring-tailed lemur, and you'll be pretty close. Prehensile tail and a taste for fruit! This one was also caught in a snare and had no front legs. :-( She still got around in the trees with her two back legs, tail and moving around a bit like an inch work on her chin. She was sweet and loved lychee.
Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Park is a rescue wildlife facility south of Phnom Penh in Cambodia. It is an amazing place with high-quality animal care and enclosures, filled only with rescued animals, primarily from the pet trade and snare traps in the wildernesses of Cambodia.

PTWRC is dedicated to helping and caring for animals who have been subjected to the illegal wildlife trade. The animals that are saved by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team are relocated to our center and each individual is assessed for release based on their health and strength to survive independently.
Animals deemed healthy and capable of life in the wild are immediately released into the forests protected by Wildlife Alliance and Forestry Administration. If release is not an option they are given a permanent home at PTWRC.
Certain animals need guidance before they are able live safely in the forest on their own. These individuals are relocated to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Station (WRS). Here they are given the tools they need to successfully provide for themselves in the wild.

Pet & Feed Otters, Gibbons, Elephants at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue!
If you like animals and want the opportunity to get up and close with them, then the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre in Phnom Penh is not to be missed! The centre is operated by the Wildlife Alliance, a non-profit organisation focusing on wildlife conservation, and is home to over 1,200 animals who are mostly victims of the wildlife smuggling trade or irresponsible pet owners. The aim of the centre is to save and treat these animals with the goal of eventually releasing them back into the wild so they can survive independently.
There are many ways for you to visit Phnom Tamao and I’ll briefly describe them below:
• Option 1: DIY - rent a scooter or hire a tuk-tuk (arrange for the driver to wait for you to finish), but is a long drive (40km from Phnom Penh) plus the centre with no signage so difficult without a guide. Freelance guides are available but quality may be hit or miss
• Option 2: Tour with Wildlife Alliance (USD $150) - the NGO that runs Phnom Tamao, expensive but gets you access to areas not open to general public, e.g. baby animals its nursery
• Option 3: Tour with Free The Bears ($90 USD) - a NGO that runs a sun bear sanctuary within Phnom Tamao. While you will visit other animals the main focus is sun bears, including preparing food for them (no actual feeding as they are still wild animals)
• Option 4: Tour with Betelnut Tours ($40 USD) - local company ran by a Cambodia & Dutch couple (Dutch guy was a backpacker who did this tour and fell in love with his tour guide!). Shows you a good variety of animals here with the chance to feed many of them
As a backpacker with a limited budget, I would highly recommend Betelnut Tours. My tour guide Aram (the Dutch once-upon-a-time backpacker) was very friendly and knowledgeable about story behind the animals here. You not only get to see a wide variety of animals here but also get the chance to pet or feed them. Plus you get a delicious home cooked lunch!
For full disclosure, I paid full price for this tour and received no compensation of any kind from any third party, so all opinions are my own .

Visit Phnom Tamao Zoological Park & Wildlife Rescue Centre
Phnom Tamao Zoo is one of the most tourist attraction and tourist destination on the weekend and holiday. i visited this park 5 times already and still want to go there sometimes on the weekend. It's a beautiful ecotourism site in Cambodia located 45km south of Phnom Penh city, if we travel on National road 2, we can turn right where there is a banner in Khmer says Entrance to Phnom Tamao Zoo and a billboard of Phnom Tamao. The full name is Phnom Tamao Zoological Park & Wildlife Rescue Centre located at Tro Pang Sap Village, Tro Pang Sap Commune, Bati District, Takeo Province, Cambodia. I heard from a tour guide who lead a tour group to Phnom Tamao Zoo that this place is open since 1995 on the land size 24 square km. with over thousand of animals. In this video, we only show few animals esp. the money :-)
