Phoenician Wall in Batroun, Lebanon
Batroun is a coastal city in northern Lebanon lying 50 km north of Beirut and 30 km south of Tripoli. It is one of the oldest cities in the world with a history of human occupation going back to at least 5,000 years.
Batroun was once one of the most important Phoenician cities in the region. The name Batroun derives from the Greek, Botrys, which was later Latinized to Botrus. Historians believe that the Greek name of the town originates from the Phoenician word bater, which means “to cut” and it refers to the maritime wall that the Phoenicians built in the sea to protect them from tidal waves, that still stand today. Other historians believe that the name of the town is derivative of the Phoenician words beit truna, which translates to “house of the chief”.
The sea wall was originally a natural structure composed of petrified sand dunes. This was reinforced by the Phoenicians with rocks and the process went on until it took its present shape in the first century B.C. The wall is 225 meters long and 1 to 1.5 meters thick. Parts of it has crumbled but the remaining still stand strong and proud in Batroun’s bay, and is a must see for an authentic piece of Lebanon’s ancient history.
Batroun is one of the world's oldest cities. Located along the Mediterranean coast in northern Lebanon, this city is known for its ancient castles and churches, quality citrus fruits, and beaches and modern nightlife. Batroun was a Phoenician metropolis that was established more than three millennia ago. The remnants of an ancient sea wall, built by the Phoenicians to protect against tidal waves, still stands along the coastline. This is not the longest or most-intact wall on our list, but it is certainly the oldest.

Challenging Seascape Photography Batroun, Lebanon
I thought it would be fun to return to Batroun, Lebanon I photographed here before. This time i want to try to get a new photo at sunset. The photo I had in mind is to include an old Phoenician sea wall in my composition, including a man made architectural element especially one that fits really well into the surrounding landscape can be nice to photograph and adds a lot to the photo. Expectations started off high, but as the day progressed things started to get a little challenging. Dealing with the elements from people, the light, the wind, the sea, all makes for a tough situation to get all these items in check. In order for a landscape photo to be a success, all these elements must work all together in your favor, which is never the case. But it was all good fun, just another day being a landscape photographer ☺

Great country Lebanon.The most exciting way to get to The Cedars is from Deir al Ahmar in the Beqaa valley. The road snakes up the bare eastern slopes of Mount Lebanon presenting marvelous views at every turn. As you get higher, at the crest you look down the other side into a gigantic bowl where the ski resort, the cedar grove and the Qadisha gorge lie before you in a wide-angle panorama. Plan this route for summer or fall because snow closes the pass in winter..
