Michelle Facey & Neil Brand at the British Silent Film Festival 2019
Silent film programmer/researcher & vocalist Michelle Facey sings the chorus for a musical comedy The Midnight Girl (1919), accompanied by Neil Brand - a live performance marking the film's centenary at the British Silent Film Festival, Phoenix Arts Centre, Leicester, on Saturday 14th September 2019.
The Midnight Girl was written by actor, director, writer, producer Adolf Philipp in 1914 as a successful stage musical & rewritten for the screen in 1919, just after Prohibition began. Michelle Facey sings the title chorus here at the beginning & the end of the film.
It stars Adolf Philipp & Marie Pagano, a little known actress, who was noted for her daring stunt-work in the New York film industry of the 1910's. Michelle has researched & documented the careers of both the lead players & this performance took place as part of her presentation for the BSFF with a screening of the Archive Film Agency's 2K digital transfer of the film from their own nitrate copy.
With thanks to Paul Joyce for his camerawork.

The ABCs of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world's leading talents in contemporary genre film, including the directors of House of the Devil, Hobo with a Shotgun, A Serbian Film, Tokyo Gore Police, You're Next & four British Directors - Ben Wheatley (Sightseers), Simon Rumley (Red, White & Blue), Jake West (Doghouse) & Leeds based Lee Hardcastle, who with his claymation short, won a competition to be the final Director. Thousands Attend Leicester Christmas Lights Switch On
This weekend saw the town centre packed for a feast of festive fun with the traditional Christmas lights switch on moving to Humberstone Gate for the first time.
The switch-on of the city centre's 20,000 lights this Sunday was moved from the Town Hall to better accommodate the thousands of people who attended.
A specially built stage at the bottom of Humberstone Gate featured performances from Leicester Theatre Group, music from local bands and a special visit from cast members of De Montfort Hall's pantomime, Aladdin as well as a an appearance from Father Christmas who helped with the countdown to the lights switch-on.
At 4.30pm, Lord Mayor of Leicester Cllr Mustafa Kamal flicked on the switch to light up Leicester's town Centre.
The Town Hall Square was a focal point for the celebrations, with a Christmas procession led by three camel-riding Kings setting off from there.
The Cultural Quarter was also involved in the celebrations by hosting a free 'Light the Night' festival which included performances from some of the region's most promising young musicians followed by a spectacular festival of light which saw a series of animations projected onto buildings in Halford Street, while in Orton Square, a digital firework display was projected onto a massive 60ft screen. Visitors were able to trigger multi-coloured fireworks by touching the screen.
The Light the Night festival was inspired by Leicester's bid to become UK City of Culture 2017, and was put together by the Phoenix cinema and arts centre, Leicester's Cultural Quarter Business Association and artists' collective Creative Manifesto.
Visitors to the city centre had the chance to sample festive delights at Leicester Market, which held its fifth Winter Food and Crafts Festival showcasing everything from curries and samosas to hot roast chestnuts.

CNM Estates - KINGSTON REGAL
Kingston Regal will see the beautiful restoration of the interior and exterior of this listed Art Deco building and its transformation into a lively mixed-use building. Retaining much of the period detailing and features, the new design will include a conference centre, restaurant, dance studio, children’s activity area. An additional new building will contain office and small business incubator space, serviced apartments for short term rentals, and luxury residences.
Located in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, in the west of Greater London. The Regal Cinema was built on an extended site of the Cinem Palace (1909-1931) which was demolished. It was built by the County Cinemas circuit in a lavish Art Deco style.
It was taken over by Union Cinemas in 1936 and the name was changed from Regal Cinema to Union Cinema in March 1937. Union Cinemas were about to be taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC) and when they did the take-over, ABC changed the name back to Regal Cinema in 1938.
It was re-named ABC from August 1961 and in October 1972 the Wurlitzer organ was removed to be installed in the Musical Museum, Brentford, Middlesex. The ABC closed as a cinema on 17th July 1976 with Blondie and Adventures of a Taxi Driver.
It was converted into a Coral Bingo Club and from 1991 it operated as a Gala Bingo Club. The Gala Bingo Club was suddenly closed in around April 2010, and the building was boarded up, with all signage removed. When closed it was in excellent condition.
