The Tujia ethnicity (土家族 literally meaning native dwellers) who live in the Wuling Mountains (武陵山) in Central China straddling the common borders of Hunan, Hubei, and Guizhou provinces, and Chongqing Municipality, is synonymous with their culture of song and singing. Here, a girl on a boat sings a folk song for tourists. She says “Hello my friends, welcome to beautiful Phoenix Ancient Town. Let me sing a song as a gift to you all…”

Ancient Fenghuang, a village in central China, used to be a frontier town, separating the Han civilization from the Miao and Dong minorities. It was an important regional center for trade and cultural exchange.
The riverside setting of the village, with its wooden stilt houses and narrow mysterious back alleys, makes it one of the most attractive places in the region.
These days, it has become a major tourist destination. While some traditions remain, much of the town has been set up to cater for the influx of new visitors, in some ways changing the face of the village beyond recognition.
Either way, Fenghuang provides an interesting glimpse of the many challenges and contrasts that exist in China today.

Fenghuang county is in the Hunan province, China. Home to a small population of Miao and Tujia minorities, the ancient town is very charming with restored city wall along the south bank of the Tuo river.
We traveled by bus in our backpacks from Zhangjiajie to this ancient picturesque town in December 2011. The wooden and stone bridges over the river and the unique traditional stilt houses made this ancient town picture perfect!

We almost didn't go.
Another 22-hour train ride, this time through China's deep countryside. I remember thinking it would be easier to just go back to Shanghai.
I kept my thoughts to myself.
Maybe it was the visual in my mind's eye of a city on stilts, a green river flowing through its center. The image enchanted me and this new curiosity began to restructure the itinerary.
Our early morning arrival into Feng Huang seemed underwhelming at first. Perhaps it was the long journey, the grey morning sky, or a city that had not woken up yet. Thoughts of Shanghai crept back into my head. But, it didn't take long to discover that the beauty of Feng Huang lies in its primitive simplicity.
Wooden houses on stilts, uneven stone steps, narrow alleyways all within an ancient walled city. The overcast skies turned the city into a giant soft box of light, making the colors amidst grey buildings pop.
The Tuo Jiang River not only carried tourists in boats but also served as a laundry source, kitchen basin and even bath, its waters rushing through the town at a fast pace but leaving the city seemingly untouched by time.
We almost didn't go, but thankfully we did.

鳳凰古城Ancient Town of Fenghuang，位於湖南省湘西土家族苗族自治州的西南部，土地總面積約10平方千米。2010年底約5萬人口，由苗族、漢族、土家族等28個民族組成，為典型的少數民族聚居區。距銅仁鳳凰機場27公里；G209國道，S308省道貫穿全境，枝柳鐵路穿境而過。這裡與吉首的德夯苗寨，永順的猛洞河，貴州的梵淨山相毗鄰，是懷化、吉首、貴州銅仁三地之間的必經之路。湖南十大文化遺產之一。曾被新西蘭作家路易•艾黎稱讚為中國最美麗的小城，與雲南麗江古城、山西平遙古城媲美，享有“北平遙，南鳳凰”之名。是國家歷史文化名城，國家AAAA級景區。鳳凰古城始建於明嘉靖三十五年（1556年），至今已有四百多年歷史，雖歷經滄桑，仍保存完好。古城明清時代特色民居120多棟，各種廟祠館閣30多座，是中國西南文物建築最多的縣份。城內還有古色古香的石板街道200多條。鳳凰古城分為新舊兩個城區，老城依山傍水，清淺的沱江穿城而過，紅色砂岩砌成的城牆佇立在岸邊，南華山襯著古老的城樓，城樓還是清朝年間的，鏽跡斑斑的鐵門。鳳凰古城北門城樓本名“璧輝門”，北城門下寬寬的河面上橫著一條窄窄的木橋，以石為墩，兩人對面都要側身而過，曾是出城的唯一通道。 東門和北門古城樓尚在。城內青石板街道，江邊木結構吊腳樓，以及朝陽宮、古城博物館、楊家祠堂、沈從文故居、熊希齡故居、天王廟、大成殿、萬壽宮等建築。鳳凰古城以回龍閣古街為中軸，連接無數的石板小巷，溝通全城。回龍閣古街是一條縱向隨勢成線、橫向交錯鋪砌的青石板路，自古以來便是熱鬧的集市。鳳凰古城地形複雜，東部及東南角的河谷丘陵地帶為第一級臺階，以低山、高丘為主、兼有崗地及部分河谷平地、地表切割破碎，穀狹坡陡，一般海拔在500米以下。從東北到西南的中間地帶為第二級臺階，海拔500～800米。西北部中山地帶為第三級臺階，海拔在800米以上。鳳凰古城屬中亞熱帶季風濕潤性氣候，西北中山山原有北亞熱帶的性質。鳳凰古城處於湘西低熱區，年平均氣溫為15.9度，大於等於35度日數全年僅10.5天，日照差年平均8.3度。鳳凰古城位於雲貴高原東側少雨地區，歷年平均降雨量僅1308.1毫米，年降水量為州內最少，也是全省少雨區之一。冬季盛吹偏北風，夏季盛吹偏南風。受大氣環流的影響，表現為最明顯的季風環流。湘西沱江為鳳凰縣境最大的河流，為武水一級支流，上有二源：北源為烏巢河，發源於禾庫都沙南山峽谷中，灘險流急，天雨水漲，行旅多阻。沱江從西至東橫貫鳳凰縣境中部地區，流經臘爾山、麻沖、落潮井、都裡、南華山、沱江鎮、官莊、橋溪口、木江坪等9個鄉鎮。至瀘溪縣河溪會武水，在武溪鎮匯入沅江。幹流全長131公里。在鳳凰縣境長96.9公里，流域面積為732.42平方公里。多年平均流量11.89立方米/秒，自然高差533米。

Fanjingshan is the most famous mountain in Guizhou,located in Jiangkou county.There are two small temple built on top of two vertical giant rocks(the rock about 120m high from bottom),and a small stone arch bridge link them. First build in Ming dynasty,about 400 years ago.
