Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Eau Claire (#813)
[Original Airdate: April 4, 2019]
Eau Claire really IS the definition of renaissance. As John Gurda said, if you were familiar with this northwestern Wisconsin city 20 years ago, you’re not familiar with it now unless you live in Eau Claire!
The new Pablo Center for the Arts, lighted bridges and public art, many company headquarters and Phoenix Park have transformed downtown EC. Old foundational places that could never be replaced, like the Court’n House and the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum, retain the roots of this city. And new things in old spaces, like the Lismore and Oxbow hotels, Banbury Place in the old Uniroyal plant, and tons of renovation on the UW-EC Campus prove a commitment to reinvestment and renovation.
This is a city infused with music, youthful energy, Kubb and tons of activity, all supported by investment and commitment. Eau Claire was the perfect place to finish our eighth season!

See the Light Part 1: A Historical Perspective
A local historical icon is being transformed into a dazzling display of color and light. Hundreds of spectators are gathering to see the light for themselves. But first, let's illuminate this event with a brief history of the Phoenix Park footbridge...
#ValleyMediaWorks #EauClaire #Community
I spoke with Carrie Ronnander, the director of the Chippewa Valley Museum, about the bridge's history:
The story of the bridge is that it's a lot older than we think. That bridge was built in 1903, but it's built with pieces of bridges brought from LaCrosse. The piers were built in 1903, and the trusses, there's 3 parts to them, they were all brought up from LaCrosse, they were all built in 1876.
You had skilled tradesmen who would've done some of the welding, the craft-type work and then there were general laborers who were doing general construction. But 33 men worked on it for about a year.
Anything that the community was needing in large quantities would come in, go out, early years it was timber in later years tires as well as farmer's produce.
In 1979 the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul line then discontinued using the line. In 1980 they tried to find another owner for the railroad, they did find one, but again they didn't really make it go. in 1981 the whole line was abandoned, at that time it was discontinued being a railroad bridge.
Over the past 36 years, the bridge has found a new purpose. Instead of trains hauling freight, there are dads pulling kids, friends carrying on conversations, and dogs walking people. The Phoenix Park footbridge has become an essential and iconic part of downtown Eau Claire. But tonight is the dawn of a new era...
Big thank you to Liz, Carrie, and Olaf at the Chippewa Valley Museum for their invaluable support in creating this video!

Running on Empty
From the time I was old enough to run, I ran outside to play. In my rural Racine, Wisconsin neighborhood, there was no city park -- only a vacant lot that my dad plowed up with his tractor, and tried his best to turn into a baseball diamond. Try as we might, our playing field was never level. The field rolled downhill toward the third base line.
The city of Eau Claire has dozens of green, beautifully-maintained parks -- and many of them include ballfields complete with backstops and fences.
But whenever I pass one of those parks, all I see is empty grass, devoid of mitts and bats and baserunners. The game of baseball that I -- and many of us -- grew up loving -- is truly becoming America's PAST time. But it isn't just baseball that's missing.
In the spirit of both scientific and journalistic curiosity I decided to conduct a social experiment. I'd pick 20 Eau Claire parks, wait for a beautiful summer day, and record what I found in each. Here are the results...
