Paradise Cave in Phong Nha from Dong Hoi- Vietnam Travel Vlog
Our main reason for riding to Dong Hoi was to use it as a base to visit a couple of the caves in Phong Nha National Park, specifically Paradise Cave and Dark Cave.
We were originally going to ride to the caves ourselves but after a day and night of rain and reading about the condition of the roads out there, we decided to cough up the extra dollars and book a tour...We are honestly so glad we did.
We went with a company called Tour to the Caves which was recommend by and booked through our hostel, Au Lac bar and Hostel.
We'll admit we were a little worried at first, but as soon as the van pulled up and our guide Nick greeted us, we were golden!
We had a great day out there and this just some of the footage from our time in Paradise cave.
We'd love it if you liked and shared this video, so others who haven't yet heard of us, also get a chance to share in the experience. Thanks :)

We are Leon and Tash, a New Zealand vlogging couple who set off on an amazing Vietnam adventure as fulltime travellers, backpacking Vietnam. But we weren't going to travel to Vietnam for one of those ordinary backpacking Vietnam trips you hear about everybody doing, where they go for a couple off weeks and check out the beaches or maybe riding through Vietnam at such a crazy pace that they never get off the beaten track. No we want more than that.
Our Vietnam adventures start with learning the way of the locals, taking just enough time to figure out how things work, discover what the Must see places in Vietnam are and more importantly where Vietnam's hidden gems are...
To do this, we moved to Danang Vietnam. The plan was to spend 3 months living in Da Nang, meeting and learning from locals about the culture, the amazing food, their way of living and what places they would recommend to travel in Vietnam.
And because Danang is in the middle of the country, we hoped we might meet other tourists or expats who were having their own Vietnam travel adventure or were at the halfway point of motorcycle riding through Vietnam and hear from them, what places they thought we must visit in Vietnam. Also, as new travel vloggers, having a base there meant we could try things like doing Da Nang Vietnam travel vlog or creating a Danang Vietnam travel guide, before also taking on the stresses of fulltime travel.
Then in month 4, that's when the real Vietnam adventure begins. With our new list of must see places, we will head to Saigon and buy a couple of motorbikes. to start our Vietnam road trip!
Motorcycle riding through Vietnam seems like one of the most hectic, crazy and chaotic things anyone could do, but we can't wait!! And we wont be following a simple South to North / Saigon to Hanoi route, we plan on doing more like a figure 8, so that our travel in Vietnam will cover both the inland and coastal areas of this amazing country.
So can we still say we are backpacking Vietnam? Or should we be telling people our travel in Vietnam is a motorcycle trip through Vietnam? We're not sure, but what we do know is, our Vietnam road trip is going to cover over 6000km's from Saigon right up to the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc near Cao Bang, round the northern point of the Ha Giang loop and everything else we can access in between.
So we hope you'll join us, the New Zealand vlogging couple, on our Vietnam adventure by clicking subscribe to join the Tribe and experience our travel in Vietnam..

Vietnam: Paradise Cave, Dark Cave or Phong Nha Cave - How to visit the great caves in Phong Nha?
How to visit the Caves of Phong Nha (Son Trach)?
Visiting the caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park is one of the main sights in Vietnam. There are several caves you can visit, which was also a little bit confusing when we were planning our trip. So here you find all the important information you need to visit the amazing caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang.
How to get to Phong Nha?
So first of all you need to know where to stay for visiting the caves. Our advice is not to stay in Dong Hoi which is 55 km (34 miles) away from the caves. So the best and closest place to stay is Phong Nha village, also called Son Trach. If you travel north you probably come from Hue. The bus ride takes around 4-5 hours and costs 160.000 VND ($7, 6.20€ and £4.60). When you travel south you maybe come from Ninh Bình. In this case it is possible that you need to take a sleeper bus: the 7.5 hour bus ride costs around 200.000 VND ($8.80, 7.70 € and £5.75).
Where to stay?
Phong Nha village is basically just one long street where you find all the hotels, backpackers and restaurants. There is not a lot to do here, so we would recommend to stay here for around one or two nights depending how many caves you want to visit. We stayed in a hotel called Khach San Hoa Phuong Hotel, which was alright and costs around $10 for a double room. The hostel Easy Tiger is also a popular place to stay at, but here you need a reservation in high season. It is also possible to stay at a homestay or farmstay, but these places are a little bit out of town. So better check the address and location when you book a room in advance. There are not many places for food, but the Tuan Ngoc restaurant is certainly a good choice – here you can also hire scooters (see below).
How to visit the caves?
One of the hardest decisions you have to make is probably which caves you should visit. This really depends on your time and money. Here you find a short description of the main caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park:
Phong Nha Cave: was used as a hospital during the Vietnam War. You enter the cave by boat. It is better to share the boat with as many people as possible as you pay for the boat and not for the seat.
Dark Cave: is an adventure cave. It is all about ziplining, walking through dark tunnels, fighting in the mud and swimming in small creeks. A visit costs around 350.000 VND ($15, 13.60 € and £10). We asked people how the Dark Cave was and they said “very dark”.
Paradise Cave: people recommended us to visit the Paradise Cave before we even went to Vietnam. This cave is enormous, illuminated and spectacular. The entry fee is 250.000 VND ($11, 9.70 € and £7.15). We only visited the Paradise Cave but this is truly one of the most impressive sights we have ever seen. It is definitely a must-see in Vietnam!
The best way to visit the caves is by hiring a scooter. Hiring one scooter costs around 90.000 VND for a day and you need petrol for roughly 50.000 VND. We hired the scooter in the Tuan Ngoc Restaurant. You reach the caves quite easy as you can make a big loop, first you pass by Dark Cave, then Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave at the end. From Phong Nha Cave you can ride back to Phong Nha village, but be careful – the last part is a gravel path.
On the way back, between Paradise Cave and Dark Cave you can visit the Suoi Nuoc Mooc, a blue spring where you can cool off. The water is crystal clear, but the whole area is quite touristy. You pay 80.000 VND for the entry + 10.000 VND for hiring a life jacket (you have to wear it). For a price of 180.000 VND you can do some kayaking through the spring (very little space for kayaking) and you can climb through a high-wire garden (not that spectacular by the way).

Jungle Boss Trek in Phong Nha National Park
What an epic adventure, trekking through the mangroves of Phong Nha National Park. Huge thanks to Jungle boss for making it happen, allowing us to bring our DJI phantom 4 drone with us to capture the park from above!
The trek took all day including 7km of climbing through the jungle mangroves to reach 2 beautiful caves and a tranquil lunch spot next to a fish infested natural pond! This trek had it all, we highly recommend Jungle Boss.
We went to visit Elephant cave first, before swimming in Tra Ang Cave at the end of our trek. Not for the typical tourist, this was a tough days work, but the caves and the jungle experience made it so enjoyable at the same time.
There are many caves in the Phong Nha National Park, this is just two of the more quieter options... which can only be seen with Jungle Boss.
Dong Hoi
We decided to stay in the city of Dong Hoi, approximately 1 hour from Phong Nha national park. The city seemed quiet, not many tourists around. There's a beach not far from the centre which we had to ourselves (a bit cold this time of year in February). Nice vibes, friendly people, but if we were to do it all again, we would stay in a homestay closer to the park and do several treks / cave tours instead!
That sums up our adventure here in central Vietnam...

ZIP LINE & DARK CAVE TOUR | PHONG NHA NATIONAL PARK ????????
DISCOVERY CAVE TOURS | PHONG NHA | VIETNAM TRAVEL VLOG
DAY 68 - WE TAKE A CAVE TOUR OF PARADISE CAVE AND THE DARK CAVE IN PHONG NHA NATIONAL PARK VIETNAM
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is known for its caves! Paul and I took a all day tour with Discovery Tours to see what Phong Nha had to offer. We fed monkeys, explored caves (even in the dark!), and zip lined. Below I will give more details about our tour! enjoy!
OUR TOUR -
Our tour bus picked us up early morning to our first stop, the Botanical Gardens. There we were able to feed monkeys (don't forget to bring some bananas!) and take a short hike to a gorgeous waterfall.
Next on our list is Paradise Cave! Paradise Cave was discovered in 2005, and open to the public in 2010. Because the cave is still relatively new, it was surprisingly very well done. The wooden stairs that lead down into the cave lower you to the caves floors. There you can walk through and see all the beauty within. Trust me when I say this cave truly deserves its name!
Our next, and final, destination, is one of the most popular and adventurous of the caves Phong Nha has to offer. The Dark Cave. The Dark Cave is 5,258 meters long and 83 meters high. There is a beautiful river running into its mouth and is surrounded by a breathtaking jungle treeline. There are two ways to enter the cave, you can either zip line from the lighthouse into the caves mouth, or kayak. As you enter the cave the light immediately begins to retreat, which is why they provide everyone with a helmet and a headlamp. Hiking through the narrow sections of the cave barefoot and in the dark was quite the experience, and we were rewarded with a mud bath at the end of the cave. As you trek back the the mouth of the cave you are able to wash off all the excess mud and hop in a kayak to their water sports and zip line facilities.

Dong Hoi to Phong Nha 40 km ride – Vietnam Day 24
Woke up at 6.00 a.m. to a view of the ocean from my bed and then went into town to find a great breakfast. Arrived around 7.00 and was the second customer in, by 8.00 it was full of locals and buzzing, nice food/coffee for a good price.
Got on the bike around 9.30 and did the short 40 km ride from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha, I was a little confused as they call the town Son Trach but when I got there everyone seemed to refer to it as Phong Nha.
I was immediately blown away by how beautiful it was, it’s a range of karst mountains, the oldest in Asia at 400 million years old, and my guesthouse was right on the river overlooking the mountains. I took my time to settle in and rode around on my motorbike deciding to do the famous cave tour to Phong Nha Cave the next day. Had a nice jog at 4.00 p.m. down the river to see the locals doing what they do and then chilled on a deckchair by the river deciding to treat myself to an Indian curry. Not the best curry I’ve ever had, but the huge portion was great and the staff were nice.
Turned in early at 8.00 p.m. to be ready for a big day of exploring the next day….
***Big point to note, having a motorbike to tour Vietnam is a massive advantage and great fun. You get to go where to like when you like and getting to new places you can ride around to find the perfect accommodation. I’ve gotten to a few places and had places I’d researched to stay in which turned out to be crap. If I was getting off a bus or train with a backpack, I probably wouldn’t have the energy to search around for places but with the motorbike in half an hour I can ride around a place until I find a perfect spot…
But, caveat to that, I would not ride here if I’d never ridden a bike before. Even with 10 odd years’ experience of riding a bike in Thailand some of the stuff of the road here has scared the life out of me. It can be done as a first-time rider, but, be careful, be very, very, careful.

The karst formation of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has evolved since the Palaeozoic (some 400 million years ago) and so is the oldest major karst area in Asia. Subject to massive tectonic changes, the park's karst landscape is extremely complex with many geomorphic features of considerable significance. The vast area, extending to the border of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, contains spectacular formations ...

Dark Cave Tour Disaster Ending in Phong Nha - Vietnam Travel
After a great morning exploring the amazing Paradise Cave, we headed down to the adventurous Dark Cave. We weren't to sure how great this tour was going to be on a cold and rainy day, but as soon as we started down the zip line to the entrance of the cave, it was big smiles and laughing all around!
After the zipline and a swim to the entrance of the cave, it was headlamps on and exploration through the mud lined walls of the cave began. When we found our way to the famous mud pool / mud bath, it was time to get dirty and then turn out all the lights, to see just how dark Dark Cave really is...
After our time in the cave we walked to a fresh water pool to clean up and it was at this point we made a disastrous discovery....Somehow I had left my iPhone in my shorts pocket and it was soaked!! Absolutely dripping water and covered in mud :(
We paddled an inflatable canoe back to the main area where we wiped the phone down, tried to dry it out and then headed back to take a few more zip line rides before calling it a day.
We'd love it if you liked and shared this video, so others who haven't yet heard of us, also get a chance to share in the experience. Thanks :)

After we'd swam in the river and I'd ridden the scooter in this video:
This was an incredible part of the Ho Chi Minh Road. Hours of endless twisting bends through gorgeous scenery with no intersections and basically no traffic either! Absolute motorcycling heaven!
In May 2017, I was lucky enough to be able to visit Vietnam and tour by motorcycle with Bikes & Drones, who I had gotten to know through this whole YouTube thing.
This is the 7th video in a series of motorcycling videos where I spent a week riding around the absolutely stunning mountains and seaside areas of Central Vietnam on a Honda XR125, which was made available to me by Bikes & Drones. I cannot thank him enough for the awesome experience.
Then it was back to Ho Chi Minh City for more adventures before flying home.
