Tracking Kawah Ijen Blue Fire Banyuwangi / Travel Video

Indonesia's Kawah Ijen volcano, located near the eastern tip of Java island, is a relatively ordinary volcano by day. OK so it's kind of terrifying, as most volcanoes are, but there's nothing about it that outwardly separates it from any of the other hundreds of volcanoes in this island country.
The Dark Side of the Blue Light

As you continue marveling at the azure beauty unfolding in front of you, you might notice dozens or even hundreds of men around you, moving feverishly—and without gas masks. These are sulfur miners, residents of small villages around the base of the volcano, employed by the Chinese company that owns the mine.


Think your trek was difficult? The miners carry approximately 88 pounds of powdery, toxic sulfur at a time, in two baskets connected by a beam of bamboo and suspended over their shoulders, over the same distance—and probably faster than you walked it. They also earn less than $7 (yes, that's U.S. dollars) for their effort, in spite of the fact that sulfur has an extremely high commercial value.


The miners won't mind you being there (although, again, you should probably take a guide) but it's customary to tip them 10,000-20,000 Indonesian rupiah so they can buy cigarettes—smoking is their favorite creature comfort, which is perhaps ironic given the damage the sulfur fumes almost certainly inflict upon their lungs. Hopefully, in the future, local people won't need to do this backbreaking work, and the only reason to go down into Indonesia's blue-fire volcano will be tourism.
Kawah Ijen Guided Tours
When it comes to guides, several Indonesian companies offer tours, but the best way to go about seeing the blue fire of Kawah Ijen volcano is to hire a local guide. One highly-recommend guide is Sam from Ijen Expedition, a young man who resides in the Taman Sari township at the base of the volcano.
Sam is not only passionate, professional and fluent in English, but invests proceeds from his tours into education in his village, which will decrease the dependency of locals on mining jobs, ultimately increasing the quality of their lives. One day, he hopes, there will be no sadness felt at Kawah Ijen volcano—only amazement!

To learn why, you'll need to head to the base of the volcano just after midnight, and hike up and into the volcano's crater. It's no easy task—you'll trek more than four miles and ascend to heights of nearly 10,000 feet, with only the light of the moon to guide you—and that's if it's out.

You'll also need a gas mask: When you begin your descent into the crater, toxic sulfur fumes blow over you, marring not only your ability to breathe but also your visibility. (It's for this reason that you should also probably bring a local guide with you—but more on that in a minute).
Around the time the clock strikes three or four, you'll have arrived at the bottom of the crater, and laid your eyes upon one of the most alien sights on our planet: Blue fire spewing out of the ground! The vibrant blue hue of these flames, which results from heavy sulfur deposits in the volcano, is best seen during the darkest part of the night, hence your needing to wake up long before the crack of dawn.

Achmad Zulkarnain, known as Dzoel by his friends, didn't realise he was different until he was eight years old, when children at school began teasing him about his appearance. I found a big mirror. That was when I realized I'm different from everyone else, he told Al Jazeera.

Eventually, with support from family and friends, he regained enough confidence to go back to class, later graduating from high school and getting a job running an internet cafe. There was a photography service there. I decided to buy a camera on credit. I learned and learned and learned until I was known as a photographer.

ITDBI 2019 Etape4 Terakhir International Tour De Banyuwangi Ijen Tinggal 85 Peserta

Setelah melahap lintasan sepanjang 390,7 KM pada tiga etape sebelumnya, 19 tim peserta International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (ITdBI) hari ini, Sabtu (28/9/2019), akan menghadapi etape terakhir sejauh 129,9 KM. Etape ini merupakan jalur paling ‘horor’ karena menyajikan medan berat berupa tanjakan ekstrem Gunung Ijen. Puluhan rider akan mengikuti etape ini dengan mengambil start dari Pasar Purwoharjo menuju finish di kaki Gunung Ijen. Etape ini melewati medan mendatar hingga 100 kilometer awal. Pembalap disuguhi tiga titik sprint di Genteng, Srono, dan di depan SMPN 1 Banyuwangi. Setelah itu jalanan mulai naik sejak di Boyolangu. Ada dua titik King of Mountain (KOM) yang harus ditaklukkan para pembalap. Kedua spot itu berada di Jambersari (Kategori 4), dan Kalibendo (Kategori 3). Selepas itu para pembalap melalui ‘jalur neraka’ menuju Paltuding, Gunung Ijen. Rider akan ditantang untuk menaklukkan tanjakan tipe hors categorie (HC), atau yang paling berat. Panjangnya 25 kilometer. Inilah tantangan terberat, sekaligus penentuan siapa juara ITdBI tahun ini. Lalu siapa saja yang memiliki kans untuk menjadi jawara ITdBI? Pembalap dalam negeri, maupun luar negeri sama-sama punya kans untuk menjadi juara. Syaratnya cuma satu: mereka yang tercepat menaklukkan tanjakan di Gunung Ijen Jika bercermin dari general classification, ada sejumlah pembalap yang memiliki peluang besar untuk juara ITdBI 2019. Pemegang yellow jersey, Jesse Ewart menjadi unggulan pertama. Pembalap asal Team Sapura Cycling ini berambisi menjuara ITdBI 2019. “Saya akan berusaha mempertahankan posisi pertama hingga etape terakhir nanti,” tegasnya. Rider asal Australia itu tak bisa bersantai. Sebab ia ditempel ketat oleh Robbie Hucker (Team UKYO), Michael Vink (St George Continental Cycling Team), Jonel Carcueva (Team Go For Gold), Maral-Erdene Batmunkh (Terengganu Inc. TSG Cycling Team), dan Marcos Garcia Fernandez (Kinan Cycling Team). “Jika dilihat, pembalap-pembalap inilah yang menjadi calon juara tahun ini. Khusus untuk Jesse Ewart, sebagai pemegang jersey kuning, dia pasti akan berusaha sekuat tenaga untuk mempertahankannya. Apalagi dia jagoan tanjakan,” sebut Race Director ITdBI 2019, Jamaluddin Mahmood. Jamaluddin juga menyebut nama Amir Kolahdozhagh (Taiyuan Miogee Cycling Team). Kolahdozhagh adalah peraih gelar raja tanjakan di ITdBI 2017. Gelar itu ia sandang setelah menaklukkan medan terjal di Gunung Ijen. Mirsamad Pourseyedi (Omidnia Mashhad Team) juga layak diperhitungkan. Pourseyedi adalah jawara ITdBI 2013 silam. Bagaimana dengan peluang pembalap Indonesia? Ada dua pembalap yang masuk dalam sepuluh besar klasemen umum. Mereka adalah Selamat Juangga (KFC Cycling Team), dan Aiman Cahyadi (PGN Road Cycling Team). Angga berada di posisi ketujuh. Sedangkan Aiman kedelapan. “Memang pembalap Indonesia cukup susah untuk bersaing dengan pembalap Eropa atau Australia. Akan tetapi, tidak menutup kemungkinan mereka bisa bagus. Aiman contohnya. Dia bisa menjadi juara etape kedua. Mudah-mudahan ada hasil bagus yang diraih Aiman atau pembalap Indonesia lainnya,” ucap pria asal Malaysia itu. Terpisah, Aiman Cahyadi menunjukkan tekadnya untuk meriah hasil maksimal pada etape pamungkas. “Saya akan berusaha semaksimal mungkin untuk mencapai hasil yang terbaik,” ujarnya. Hal senada disampaikan Angga. “Paling utama saya harus bersemangat. Kalau ada kesempatan untuk breakaway, saya akan melakukannya,” sebutnya.
