HOBART Australia, Travel Guide - What To Do: IN ONE DAY (Tour - Self Guided Highlights)
An easy self-guided tour of Hobart, Australia. Showing you the best attractions and how to navigate them. Check the links below for further information on how to better plan your journey.
City Description:
Hobart, capital of Australia's island state of Tasmania, sits on the River Derwent. At its fashionable Salamanca Place, old sandstone warehouses host galleries and cafes. Nearby is Battery Point, a historic district with narrow lanes and colonial-era cottages. The city's backdrop is 1,270m-high Mount Wellington, with sweeping views, plus hiking and cycling trails. The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), built into underground galleries, exhibits art of antiquity along with contemporary works. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery focuses on Aboriginal heritage, local history and native wildlife, with notable colonial-era displays. Established in 1818, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens highlight native plants. North of the city, the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is home to rescued animals including Tasmanian devils, wallabies and kangaroos. Popular day trips include Port Arthur, a 19th-century penal colony preserved as a historic site, and rugged Bruny Island, known for its coastal wildlife.

Weather and Events:
Australia's most southerly state has a temperate climate. The island receives an influx of visitors, many in search of outdoor pursuits, during the summer school holidays (Dec-Jan). In the days after Christmas, yachts arrive in the capital, at the end of the renowed Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. In Feb, The Royal Hobart Regatta is an action-packed festival with sailing, rowing and swimming races, plus music and fireworks. Winters (Jun-Aug) are cool and wet, with snow in the mountains. After months of planning, three landscape photographers finally started their landscape photography tour of Tasmania.
Tasmania is a state known for its unique landscapes and stunning rugged wilderness. It has been on my bucket list for many years. Tassie offers such an amazing variety of different landscape scenery no matter what your photography preference. From impressive mountains ranges to valleys filled with mist, cascading waterfalls to ancient rainforest there is something there for everyone
This is a taste of the incredible scenery we encountered and the conditions we endured. It was an amazing experience which I’ll share through a series of upcoming videos.

How to Choose a Tripod and Photography Locations in Tasmania
In this episode of Ask Ben I answer a question about what Tripod to get. It always amazes me as to how much people will spend on a lens, camera or even a camera bag but won't splurge on a Tripod, when in reality, if you want tack sharp images a sturdy tripod is the easiest way.
I also talk about some of my favourite locations for photography in Tasmania and share some of my photos with you.

Nightscapes in Tasmania Part 1 Cradle Mountain
Join me for Part 1 of my Nightscapes in Tasmania series. In this episode we visit the iconic Cradle Mountain National Park. The snow fell down and covered the landscape in a carpet of white which made it difficult to effectively shoot nightscapes. However this spot is so beautiful, it's the experience that matters most and any images are simply icing on the cake.
I was greatly inspired by some fellow Australian photographers who did a similar Tasmanian Road Trip last year and I thank these guys for the inspiration to make it happen in 2019.

Take your opportunities and adapt to your conditions | Landscape Photography in Tasmania Episode 10
As we had become accustomed to over the past 10 days, we had an early start to our final full day in Tasmania and our plan was to shoot a landscape image of the Sentinel Range with hopefully an epic sunrise.

It was pitch dark when Andrew Dawes and I left the van and hiked up the hill opposite the Sentinal Range. It wasn't long before the first of the light began to appear and we could see that our plan to shoot the Sentinel Range wasn't our best option.
We had high thin cloud with a break toward the horizon which was perfect for landscape photography, we weren't complaining. The only issue was the cloud was catching the best of the light over Lake Gordon. We quickly assessed our options and worked out that our best chance for a gorgeous sunrise on the other side of the hill.
It's good to have a plan each time you go out shooting landscapes, but it's important that when you see a better option, you take our opportunities and adapt to your conditions.
We hiked to the other side of the hill which overlooked a valley and explored the area for some foreground interest. Rock and a few trees anchored the image, the main hero was going to be the sky. I wanted to capture the large vista so started with the 17-35mm, a circular polariser, with an aperture of 8 on ISO 64 needed a shutter speed of around 2.0 seconds.

Make Sense of the Chaos with Simple Compositions | Landscape Photography in Tasmania Episode 09
After driving up to Hobart to drop Richard off, Andrew and I drove back to the Wilderness of the south-west to see if we could find a location for a landscape image for sunset.
Tasmania Workshops 2019 -
We found on a map a few tracks that would give us access to the banks of the Lake Gordon, so we thought we'd try our luck. When we arrived, all we could see were thousands of dead trees in the water and up the banks of the Lake, due to damming the lake years ago.
The clouds were looking good for a colourful sunset, thin and high, just ready to catch the warm setting sunlight. With limited time, I need to find a composition quickly, so I explored the banks for a simple composition. I generally find it easier to start with simple compositions to make sense of the chaos.
First shot with a simple shot straight out from the edge of the water focused on the row of mountains in the distance with a line of trees in front, ISO 64, aperture of f8.0 and a shutter speed around 1/40 to 1/20. With the first shot in the bag, I could relax and see if I could find something of interest. Walking along I noticed an old tree trunk that had fallen which made a great leading line. The main focus of the image was the silhouette of trees in front of the sky that still had a touch of colour. ISO 64, aperture of f13 for a little more depth of field, remember the log was close to the camera and a shutter speed of 10 seconds.
