Potala refers to a mountain in India sacred to the religion, and for centuries its namesake palace has been at the core of Tibet’s monastic community.
Much of the current palace complex dates to the seventeenth century. But the earliest construction began a thousand years earlier, on the commission of a Tibetan king, in honor of his marriage to a princess of China. The growing fortress became the winter home for the Dalai Lamas, monastic leaders of Tibetan Buddhism.
UNESCO’s World Heritage designation extends to the neighboring Jokhang Temple, considered Tibet’s most sacred, and the Norbulingka, once the Dalai Lama’s summer residence.
Conflict led to the exile of the Dalai Lama from China’s Tibetan Autonomous Region in 1959, and the grounds became a museum. But the Potala Palace remains a major Buddhist pilgrimage site. Many travel long distances by foot to pay their respects. Potala is divided into the Red Palace, which is for religious use, and an administrative White Palace.
Visitors to Potala have to go with a tour group, and obtain a special permit. Once in, you pass through hallways lit by butter lamps, and into public areas watched over by monks. In addition to the historic structures, the heritage site contains a vast collection of sacred texts and works of art. Withstanding the elements and political struggle, Potala Palace remains an embodiment of Tibetan culture.

Visiting Lhasa Tibet.
Hi there, my first time visiting Tibet & first ever video shooting, it's a simple video montage journey over 9 days starting from ChengDu to Lhasa Tibet. Most of the video/photo shooting are outdoor as they do not allow any video/photo taken inside the monastery/temple. You can't travel free & easy in Tibet as you need permit entry & a local guide to bring you around.
Pardon my video editing as I'm still a beginner on video editing.
Enjoy & thanks for watching.
Cheers~
Malcolm.

Tough Rides: China, Episode 1: Shanghai to the Korean Border
MojoTravels is proud to present: Tough Rides. Subscribe:
In 2010, when Canadian brothers Colin Pyle and Ryan Pyle set out from Shanghai on a motorcycle journey that had never previously been attempted, they thought they had some idea of what lay ahead of them. It was a misconception that became evident by the end of Day 1. But, despite the many challenges they faced, 65 days and 12,000 miles later they'd succeeded in circumnavigating China.
In this first episode from Ryan Pyle Productions, Colin and Ryan Pyle take off from Shanghai on their two well-kitted out BMW bikes for their epic adventure. Within minutes of setting off, Colin is nearly clipped by a giant bus; and that's just the first in a series of unexpected obstacles that lie in wait for the Pyle duo.

China Travel photography - Ganzi, Sichuan Province
Travel photography from Ganzi, Sichuan Province western China. Travelling in western China can be difficult due to a lack of transport options between some towns, but it is worth the extra effort! The people, food, landscape and culture are all fantastic and definitely worth visiting as part of any trip to China.

Lhasa, Street Life, Tibet - China Travel Channel
The street life in Lhasa, the administrative capital of Tibet, China, mostly takes place around the Jokhang Temple, which is the religious center of Tibet. The proportion of Han Chinese in Lhasa is around 20%, which is mainly concentrated on the Inner City District Chengguan . Here, the proportion of Han Chinese is about 35%. Members of the army are not taken into account.
In Tibet, the everyday life and religion can barely be separated from each other, so that it does not astonish it that dealers, pilgrims and playing children casually mingle with the rest of the population.

Tibet by train from Shanghai to Lhasa // China
Seven hours in tibet is a road movie recorded when I traveled Tibet by train to Lhasa from Shanghai in 48 hours. A great experience towards Tibet and the Himalayas. Since 2008 and the monk revolution, the Chinese regulation only allowed group of 5 people from the same nationality to travel in Tibet but on the first of April 2013, it suddenly all changed...
After one unsuccessfully attempt, I received my travel permit from the Chinese Authorities and was able to go and see one of the most and untouched land on earth. In less than 10 days, I managed to organize my entire trip to Tibet on my own while, usually it would have taken weeks, I was lucky!
Visit my website to find all the info to travel to Tibet by train!

As a freelance designer and travel photographer, Michel Piccaya has been on the road worldwide for more than 20 years, exploring the most incredible itineraries. He’s currently based in Brussels however never stays at home for a long time!
Modern day Lhasa is not a patch on what you thought Tibet looks like!
Lhasa today looks nothing like it did many years ago. That’s no fault of the Tibetans of course. After the Chinese occupation started in 1949, they quickly set about to move Tibet a “great step forward” or whatever their definition of forward was...
Yes, there are modern conveniences like paved roads, plumbing, electricity, motorized vehicles, electronics, mobiles phones and the like, but it can be safely assumed that an independent Tibet would’ve eventually adopted many of these things if they wanted to. Today, Lhasa has the feel of a modern Chinese city. The infrastructure is unmistakably Chinese, but the majority of the people are unmistakably Tibetan. The way they dress, look, and act is so different from Han Chinese that it’s very easy to differentiate who’s who.
