PERU Photography Adventure Tour - July 9 to 21 2016
Check it out at:
*Please note this is an updated video as I missed some key info on our time in the Amazon!
New for 2016, we visit Peru’s three main regions: The arid Pacific coast, the rugged highlands of the Andes, and the verdant depths of the Amazon basin, three ecosystems so distinct they feel like separate continents.
We begin this year’s adventure in Peru’s sparsely-populated coastal desert, which spans the country’s entire western third, from Ecuador in the north, extending into Chile and the Atacama in the south. The coast hides many secrets, preserved for the ages by a near-complete lack of rain. Despite the aridity, fog coats the dunes and craggy peaks, bathing them in a perpetually soft light. This part of Peru, known as Pisco, already famous for the grappa-like whiskey bearing its name, has gained new renown among oenophiles for delicate whites. We’ll stay at well-known winery’s luxury rustic accommodations to sample for ourselves. The following day, we overfly the beautifully delicate Nazca lines, taking them in from a perspective unavailable to their creators centuries ago.
Following an overnight back in Lima, we then fly to Cusco, heart of the ancient Inca Empire, widely regarded as the jewel of South America. Photographers from around the world converge to admire the distinct Spanish colonial architecture and mysterious Inca stonework. Beyond the city lay countless ancient shrines, testament to a civilization that thrived for hundreds of years in this high, barren landscape, before succumbing to the 16th Century Spanish Conquest.
Despite centuries of Spanish domination and imposition of their culture, religion and language, remnants of the Inca civilization remain to this day, squired away in isolated pockets of the Andes, where Quechua, the Inca’s language, is spoken exclusively, and residents’ knowledge of the world is limited to their particular valley, with ancient superstitions still prevalent.
After touring the city of Cusco, the Sacred Valley and the famous Machu Picchu, we journey into the Andes to attend the colorful Paucartambo festival seldom witnessed by outsiders. Here, Peruvians from around the region and country gather in colorful, symbolic costumes in a celebration of animist and Catholic traditions, some dating back to before the arrival of the Conquistadores.
Rounding out our exploration of Peru’s three regions, we take the short flight from Cusco to the Amazonian town of Puerto Maldonado to board our skiff along the Tambopata River. Here, we’ll spend three nights at the luxury Posada Amazonas, giving us two full days to enjoy naturalist-guided walks through the network of viewing trails available exclusively to guests. The Amazon is a birder’s paradise, but the ecosystem’s engulfing richness ensures that every available niche is filled, and we’ll examine and photograph everything from the macro-photography-scale (such as mushrooms, flowers, ants, frogs, spiders, etcetera) to the birds and mammals (including capybaras, wild pigs, and if we’re supremely lucky, a wild cat), to the largest scale —vine-draped trees, dozens of meters tall and around, sheltering us below in their shaded canopy.
Returning to the coast from the Amazon, we spend our final day together exploring the City of Lima in a guided tour, visiting sites off the regular tourist itinerary. The trip concludes with a climactic gourmet dinner at one of Peru’s most well-regarded restaurants.

Experience Tambopata Research Center | Travel to Peru
Tambopata Research Center is the most remote jungle lodge in the Amazon. There are no humans nearby so sightings of monkeys, macaws and other large species become more frequent. Last year, 24% of guests saw jaguar at TRC! Tambopata Research Center is an excellent headquarters for in-depth explorations of Amazonian nature and wildlife because of its remote location in uninhabited wilderness housing stable populations of endangered wildlife, the small scale of its infrastructure and operations and the presence of researchers and naturalist guides.

Manu National Park
WELCOME TO Inca Land Adventures We specialize in operating tours in the Peruvian jungle. Our programs Manu National Park is internationally famous for its pristine rainforest. The Manu Biosphere Reserve was created from the National Park and two adjacent zones in 1977 and declared a World Heritage site in 1987. It covers 1,800,000 hectares of the Southwest region of the Amazon Basin and contains four distinct ecological zones: high altitude puna; cloud forest; montane forest; tropical rainforest.
Manu is a wilderness unspoilt by large amounts of river traffic (the river system is too small to be accessible by cruise ships) or people. Everything is on a small and intimate scale, even the grass landing strip at Bocu Manu. The biosphere is divided into the Cultural and Reserved zones. Both areas contain the full spectrum of wildlife typical of Manu. The difference is that the reserved zone receives much fewer visitors, and accommodation is by camping only. The undisturbed nature of the cultural zone means that you can start your enjoy pristine tropical rainforest anywhere on the river system

TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE 4 DAY TOUR
For those with limited time but still wanting to experience a rich and remarkable section of the
Amazon Rainforest the beautiful Sandoval Lake Lodge in the lower section of the Tambopata Na-tional Reserve is an excellent choice. Here we present an extended version of our 3 day itinerary
with a highly recommended extra day to make the most of this wildlife rich rainforest environment. This lodge is easily accessible from the friendly and fascinating jungle town of Puerto Maldonado, a major centre of the timber, gold mining and eco-tourism industries in the Southern Peruvian Amazon. Puerto Maldonado is itself easily accessed from Lima and Cusco due to excellent local air links. From Puerto Maldonado our lodge is approximately 3 hours away and the journey – a thirty minute boat ride, followed by a short jungle hike and finally a paddle to our jungle home by catamaran - is fascinating in itself. Lago Sandoval is an ox-bow lake, a curve of the Madre de Dios River cut off by the river changing course. These quiet and beautiful habitats are wonderful places for wildlife watching, whether exploring the Tambopata National Reserve lake in silence by catamaran, with only the sound of our craft’s paddles for company, or walking trails with expe-rienced nature guides through diverse forest habitats.
Notable wildlife making its home around Lake Sandoval includes Red-Bellied Macaws, 5 species of monkeys, Black Caimans – largest of the alligator like caiman species found the Amazon and
growing sometimes to a maximum length of 6m, and the beautiful and highly endangered Giant Otter. Giant Otters, the largest of their kind worldwide live and hunt in large family groups and grow to a maximum length of 2m. Local people call the Otters ‘Lobos del Rio’ – Wolves of the River’ in honor of their co-operative hunting abilities. To see these animals hunting freely in their natural habitat is truly a magical experience! Welcome to the Jungle

AMAZON 2018
Documentary of of the Amazon trip in 2018. 8 Days in the Peruvian jungle, starting at Cusco and finishing in Puerto Maldonado. An epic trip in the full sense of the word.
Refugio Amazonas Lodge in Puerto Maldonado
The 35-room eco-lodge is built on a 200 hectare private reserve on the buffer zone of the much larger Tambopata National Reserve, meaning that you do feel deep into the Amazon (travel time will be approx. 4 hours from Puerto Maldonado). There are three different types of rooms: Traditional (12), Comfort (16) and Suite (4) offering different levels of comfort for science enthusiasts, soft adventurers and families. You can opt for packages including fixed excursions or a wide choice of a-la-carte explorations (either private or shared with other guests). There are options for every age and interest. Climb a 30 meter tree or paddle boarding to visit an oxbow lake. Camera traps at a nearby mammal clay lick provide a unique opportunity for collecting knowledge, investigating the presence of animals, or recording and studying behavior. There is a 30-meter canopy tower to get the eagle’s eye view over the forest. Learn about the research being conducted with drones and take extraordinary aerial shots and videos from you on top the observation tower. A highlight for those interested in aerial photography. The congregation of colorful macaws and parrots to eat clay lick on clear mornings has been described as one of the most thrilling of avian phenomena. With some luck you may spot these species if you opt for half day boat trip to Chuncho Clay Lick. Families with kids may consider going on short jungle trails where they learn to follow a map and take part in a treasure hunt for the lost Brazil nut. Alternatively you may visit a working farm, jump in kayaks or try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding. At the end of a day full of exploration we recommend a massage or an aromatherapy treatment (at extra cost) in the lodge’s small wellness center.
