Chile's Atacama Desert: Explore San Pedro de Atacama
Few places are as inhospitable or extreme as Chile’s Atacama Desert.
As the driest non-polar region in the world, less than 4mm of rain falls here each year.
Over 100,000km2 of torrid and barren land, which ripples and swells in places like a geographical accordion.
This is Mother Nature at her harshest.
But, even here, in the depths of the Atacama where life seems unwelcome, culture has thrived for thousands of years.
Once conquered by the Incan Empire, the Atacama Desert is revered by many as the spiritual heart of the country.
In remote regions of this arid expanse, indigenous communities still host ritualistic ceremonies of gratitude to Pachamama – the Earth Goddess.
Will she permit life to inhabit the Atacama Desert for centuries to come? Forging a legacy against the odds?
In towns like San Pedro de Atacama, which could be mistaken for a mirage, travelers gather to explore the region’s natural beauty and to indulge in local culture.
Here, white-washed buildings line cobbled streets, offering a welcomed refuge from the hot, dusty desert beyond. Welcoming locals are more than happy to share their oasis with inquisitive visitors.
Traditional melodies emanate from the town’s open windows, as artisan craftspeople ply their historic trades.
The town’s streets are abuzz with the exchange of the Atacama Desert’s stories – stories of mystery and of myth.
What do you hear from her enchanting call?

The following is a list of the places I visited:

Travel Adventures in the Atacama Desert: Altiplano Lagoons & Flamingo Reserve Travel Video Transcript:
Good morning everyone. Today you'll notice I'm not traveling with Audrey or my parents. Yesterday we did a marathon session of 13 hours of tours. So understandably they are back at home resting. But today I'm going to go out and show some different areas in and around San Pedro de Atacama. And these are different from what we did before. We're going to be focusing on lagoons and the altiplano and we're also going to be visiting a Salt Flat. So lots of cool stuff planned for today.
Something else I've really enjoyed about the tours here is the fact they've all left really early in the morning. That's been awesome for photography because of the nice soft light in the morning and also great for spotting wildlife.
Ah, estoy llena. Breakfast was awesome. I'm totally stuffed. Today we had omelettes and we also had bread and we had Carlitos again so it was a really good meal and now we're ready to move on.
On both days of our tour we decided to go with a company called Grado diez - Grado 10. And I thought I'd share the thought process behind that.
So number one the vehicles are a lot bigger than the typical ones plying these roads. A lot of the vehicles that you'll see on these tours are little minivans and they tend to have problems sometimes on these off-roads. So taking a big truck was really good. And the other reason we decided to go with this company too was because of the awesome windows on this vehicle. This is like a safari truck so you know the tour cost a little bit more and we did get a few extra things. Like we had a really nice breakfast, we had on the first day we had pancakes, we had really nice juice, coffee, bread. And today we had omelets. I've noticed on other cheaper tours you get a lot more of a simple breakfast. It is just like bread and maybe juice and that is it. So this was a really good choice for us. It cost a little bit more but you know sometimes the extra comfort is worth paying for.
Next up is the flamingo reserve. Time to go spot some flamingos.
Something about the tour today to really keep in mind is that the elevation does go above 4000 meters above sea level. So that means that altitude sickness can be an issue and also getting a sunburn is very common in this type of weather because you're up so high, so you really really need to slather on that sunscreen.
Alright, so that marks the end of the tour. The highlight was definitely the flamingo reserve and the salt flats.
This is part of our Travel in Chile series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chilean culture, Chilean arts, Chilean foods, Chilean religion, Chilean cuisine and Chilean people.

3 day tour from San Pedro de Atacama to Salar de Uyuni
An amazing 3 day trip from San Pedro de Atacama to Uyuni with a great driver and a great tour guide from White & Green International Travel.
Due to the unusually rainy weather around San Pedro de Atacama we had to wait 2-3 hours for the permission to cross the border, but once we got in the jeeps and started our trip in Bolivia, we enjoyed every moment. I have never experienced such a vast range of landscapes in short distances. Once it felt like being in Lord of the Rings, other times in Star Wars or in Once Upon a Time in the West haha.
We visited natural beauties, enjoyed breathtaking views, soaked in hot springs, and had wonderful traditional dishes in great accommodations with hot showers and enough blankets to warm ourselves up at night. Respect to our driver, Vladimir and our tour guide, Sebastian, they did a great job. Whenever we needed some extra time at a spot, they always waited patiently for us.
Make enough space on the memory card of your camera/phone, dress in layers and get ready for one of the best trips of your life, guys!

Planeta Atacama
Sandwiched between the Pacific and the Andes, the incredible landscape of Chile’s remote Atacama Desert is like no place on earth. With its jagged, rust-colored ravines, vast, rocky, white salt pan and volcano-topped horizons, you would be forgiven for drawing comparisons with places beyond our atmosphere.

Floating in a Lake in the Middle of Desert I San Pedro de Atacama Chile
Who would ever think that you can float in a lake in the middle of the dessert in Chile? Yes, it's true. You have to come to San Pedro de Atacama - the Atacama dessert and visit Lagoon Cejar, Lagoon Piedra. It has 70% more salt than sea and this is how you will be floating in a lake in the middle of dessert Atacama.
It was absolutely fantastic to feel this sensation for the first time. We are enjoying Chile very much and this day one of our highlights. Definitely put San Pedro de Atacama Dessert on your list when you will travel to Chile.

Travel Photography on the Salar de Uyuni and the Altiplano
Be sure to check out for more of my photography.
In my latest video, I cross the Salar de Uyuni and Bolivian Altiplano from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. This is a trip I've done a number of times, but never really photographed it well. On this trip however, I managed to get some cool photos of the Salt Flats and the Altiplano. I'm really happy with how it all turned out. Beyond the photos, I had a blast on the Salar de Uyuni and Altiplano with a bunch of new friends.

Ultimate Chile Trip - Patagonia W Trek, Valparaiso, Elqui Valley and Atacama Desert
Our big adventure starts in the south with the W Trek in Patagonia and finishes in the north with a tour of the world's most sophisticated telescope, the VLT. In between, we visit the colourful city of Valparaiso to stay in a shipping container, Pisco Elqui, the birthplace of the brandy called Pisco and San Pedro De Atacama where a rain storm wiped out the road and caused a state of emergency.
Themes of nature, stars abound in this country so as an alternative to San Pedro De Atacama we went to see the hand of the Desert outside of Antofagasta and watched the stars in a dark sky reserve.
The stars in the Atacama are different from anywhere else we have seen them, they feel close like you can touch them. It's an amazing experience and worth traveling to Chile for!
