Travel Photography in Yangshuo, China: Getting the Shot
Be sure to check out for more of my photography.
About the video:
This video is the first in a segment on Brendan van Son Travel Photography that I'm calling Getting the Shot.
Basically, what goes down in this segment of the show is simple. I take you through my process of getting a shot out in the field. From the very starting point, in which I am trying to find places to shoot, up to the shot itself, and even the post-processing of the photo, this is a bit of a guide on what goes in to getting a great image.
In this first episode of the travel photography channel, I explore the area of Yangshuo, China which really is a fascinating place to shoot travel photography. There are all these really amazing limestone karst landscapes in the Yangshuo region which makes it a great place to go out shooting. The only trouble is that there aren't really that many clean spots along the waterfront to use. We spent the better part of the day searching for somewhere in Yangshuo to photograph that really stood out to us. In the end, we got a place that was only decent.
Anyways, I finally ended up at an old bridge about 15km away from Yangshuo in a place I was somewhat happy to photograph. The light, however, wasn't so happy to see me. It's one of the things we deal with constantly in travel photography. You get to a place, and you really only have a couple days to shoot your travel photos, and you are left in the grips of the light.
In the end, I shot a scene of the bridge with some rushing water coming down in the foreground.
I shot the image at f/14, 13 seconds, ISO 100 at 11mm. I shot the photo on a sigma 10-20mm lens with a Canon 60D. I also used a gradient ND Filter.
I processed the image in Lightroom 4 using the most basic techniques in the develop module.
I hope you like the segment and if you did, please make sure you subscribe to the channel!

Okay, so it's early morning here in Yangshuo. It's about eight o'clock and the town is still sleepy. There is hardly any people on the street, so we're going to go have breakfast at our favorite Israeli restaurant and then we're going to bike around the area.

We've only been in Yangshuo for three days yet we've eaten at this very restaurant seven times. Cafe Mimosa.
What is so amazing about it? When it's good, it's good. You come back. So what are we having for breakfast this morning? Let's see. Well, my favorite feature here are two things. We've got homemade fresh banana bread. MMMM. It's just got so many nuts and different ingredients in it. It's really tasty. really healthy. And then anytime I can get my hands on hummus in the morning. Oh my. With fresh pita. Fresh, fresh, fresh. We have some museli. I got myself some eggs and a nice cup of tea. We're happy.
One of the best views in Yangshuo is unfortunately by the Ronald McDonald.
Chinese music playing in the park.
We've rented a couple of bikes and we've decided to spend our last morning exploring around the countryside areas of Yangshuo. They were pretty cheap. Just under two dollars for each bike.
Hello. Hello.
So we've been biking for a while now and we've reached the countryside, so we're just taking a little break here by this lily pond.
So now after a long bike ride we're just hanging out on the rooftop of our hostel Monkey Jane and it has some amazing views. Check it out.

RIVER LI (漓江) & YANGSHUO COUNTY (陽朔縣), China (slideshow + clips)
River Li (or River Lijiang) flows in Guangxi Zhuang, an autonomous region of People's Republic of China. In both banks of the river, and along about 100 km, it can be seen a multitude of grotesque karstic peaks which are so characteristics of the region that deserved to be represented in 20 yuan (China currency) bills. It is a favorite tour for visitors and represented in a number of paintings. The tour between Guilin and Yangshuo village (also in Guangxi region) shows those odd hills raising high into the sky, as natural skyscrapers. After the river tour, some pictures of Yangshuo village are displayed as well as some typical aspects of the rural life in the surroundings and how people get some fun in a river beach. In my slide show ( of YouTube you may see a karst cave, in Slovenia (a republic of ex-Yugoslavia). If interested, look in Wikipedia ( what karst formations are, an especial geological phenomenon leading to magnificent mountains and caves with stalactites, stalagmites and columns; basically formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks, like limestone and dolomite. South China is a major karst zone in the world. Changing the subject, then why do rural Chinese men like to possess cormorants (family of Phalacrocoracidae, genus Phalacrocorax)? The birds are used for artisanal night fishing. In fact, and owing to a well-developed retinal tapetum lucidum, the birds possess an extraordinary capacity to see in the dark; then, when they detect fish they dive in the river to catch them, but are subsequently pulled out by the lace which also prevents them from swallowing up their preys which are removed and kept aside. When the fisherman got enough fish, they allow the cormorants to fish for themselves in order to have a deserved meal... Both the fisherman and the birds stand on the river above bamboo rafts. (Personally, I did not enjoy at all this kind of show, a chocking apology to animal slavery.) Shot on September 14, 2011.
China Tours - Guilin, China
Guilin is celebrated for its picturesque limestone mountains and the meandering Li River.
An ancient Chinese saying describes the landscape in Guilin as the best scenery under heaven.
Its misty peaks rise as suddenly from the earth as trees in a forest, they surround the city like mountains floating in an imaginary sea.
With China Spree you are never far from the action, so your beautiful hotel is located in the heart of the city on a riverside avenue of the sweet-scented trees and walkway that overlooks the Li River. It's a great place for relaxation and meditation.
This part of the country encompasses China's most famous scenic landscapes.
While in Guilin we travel to Long Sheng for an off-the-beaten-path hiking tour of the spectacular Dragon Spine Rice Terraces.
Over the centuries, the drong and Yao minorities have sculpted 2,000 foot high peaks with remarkable step-like terraces. They use the terraces for growing rice. This transformation over time has created landscapes of utility as well as immense beauty.
In Spring, when the terraces are full of water, they resemble irregular silver ladders; and in autumn, when the rice ripens, the mountains turn into golden waves.
Visit the unique culture of local minorities and their villages where life has remained unchanged for thousands of years. We are able to hike between the villages following tiny stone paths carved out by the local people. This memorable journey is rarely included in the conventional itinerary.
A beautiful day waits! After breakfast, you take a scenic ride through the countryside, passing lush green fields and rice paddies, to reach the Bamboo River pier, where you embark on a memorable cruise down the picturesque Li River. The 40-mile trip has countless twists and turns and the scenery is reminiscent of classical Chinese landscapes—bamboo groves, sleepy villages, fishermen on bamboo rafts, cormorants, water buffalo, soaring karst pinnacles and mist shrouded peaks... your cruise concludes at Yangshuo, a rural town, amidst a haunting and surreal setting.
Time permitting you will have free time to explore this fascinating town on your own, followed by a tour on tuk-tuk to visit local farmers' fields and homes. Yangshuo's landscape of limestone hills, rice fields and lazy rivers is the very image of rural China, and ride on a tuk-tuk through this much-painted landscape provides a great way to experience the dramatic countryside, ancient villages and bustling local markets in a very intimate way.
Traveling back to Guilin in the late afternoon, en route, we will make photo stop to shoot signature sceneries of the countryside
If time permits, you will tour the Reed Flute Cave, nature's subterranean wonder filled with stalactites and stalagmites. Its name comes from the verdant reeds growing outside that are used to make flutes. The grand chamber known as the Crystal Palace, is an awesome spectacle.

We found Paradise in Guilin, China
We traveled from Chengdu to Guilin to embark on a 3 day photography extravaganza. The guided tour required us to wake up at 2-3am every day to photograph sunrise in incredibly difficult to reach locations with gorgeous views and stay up all the way through the sunset to catch the best light. I wasn't prepared for how much I would love Guilin, it's absolutely beautiful there.

Behind the scenes timelapse of our photoshoot with a Cormorant Fisherman (Mr. Huang) in Yangshuo, China.
This was the highlight of our trip in Yangshuo, to photograph the famous cormorant fisherman. This is an organized photography tour from a local agency in Yangshuo. Everything was pre-arranged including our own model, yes he's been a model already for 20 years and quit his job of being a Cormorant Fisherman which is no longer a feasible source of income.
