Phuket Travel Diaries (Patong, Wat Chalong, PhiPhi Island and Big Buddha)

Big Buddha Phuket in Chalong, Thailand
Phuket Big Buddha, or The Great Buddha of Phuket, is a seated Maravija Buddha statue in Phuket, Thailand. The official name is Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakiri, shortened to Ming Mongkol Buddha. Sitting atop Nakkerd Hill (sometimes Nagakerd) near Chalong, construction began in 2004. Expansion of the base was ongoing as of 2015.By 2017, 80 percent of the project had been completed. It is the third-tallest statue in Thailand behind only the Great Buddha of Thailand and Luangpho Yai.
The Buddha statue depicts Gautama in a sitting position and is 45 metres tall and 25.45 metres wide. It is made of concrete and covered with Burmese white marble. Facing towards Ao Chalong Bay the statue is the main Buddha of the Wat Kitthi Sankaram temple (Wat Kata). The statue was declared the Buddhist Treasure of Phuket by Somdet Phra Yanasangwon, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, in 2008.
The statue cost 30 million Baht (approx. $950,000 US at that time), sourced primarily from donations. It was built legally in a national conserved forest with the approval of Thai Royal Forest Department.
The statue's official name is Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakakiri
meaning:
it means the gloriously honourable Buddha on the top of the hill of Naga (Nakkerd Hill).
It is a tourist attraction but it is also an active temple with monks, so remember to dress appropriately and not to speak too loud as we often hear, unfortunately. At the entrance of the path leading to the temple, security will check your attire. No sleeveless, no short or skirt above the knee, so if you wear short skirts or shorts, they will hand you a free sarong and ask you to wear it. All along the way, you can buy snacks and drinks, but of course, no alcohol is allowed.
When reaching the top of the hill, you will find ample and well-organised parking. A wide staircase was recently in front of the Buddha. Note that the stairs are only to climb up. There is way down on the side of the hill, and a security guard is sitting there all day to make sure people remember that. In case you wonder or worry, There are 94 steps to reach the Big Buddha and climbing them is relatively easy.
From up there you will get some pretty stunning bird view on three large bays. Before that day, I always thought they were far from each other. Directly in front of the Big Buddha is Chalong Bay and when the sky is clear, you will see all the way to Phang Nga Bay. Few steps to the west, another short staircase will take you to a terrace from which you’ll get a beautiful view of Kata Bay and Kata Noi Bay. You might even recognise Promthep Cape and even Nai Harn Windmill. The best spot to see the third bay is actually to stop at the restaurant on the way up. From up there you’ll get from there a magnificent panorama of Karon Beach.
Koh Samui always had a very popular Giant Buddha, and it feels like Phuket wanted to have a bigger one. On the way down you will walk through a temple where people donate money for the construction, buy amulets and where monks hold occasional ceremonies. This place also serves as a museum narrating the history of the Big Buddha construction.
The Big Buddha of Phuket is a site to visit. It has become a bit of a tourist attraction, but it is indeed imposing and worth a photo. If you prefer more modest but beautiful temples, the sitting Buddha of Wat Kao Rang or the reclining Buddha of Wat Sri Sunthorn is more humble.

Phuket Vlog | Tibetan in Thailand | Big Buddha and Wat Chalong

I'm finally getting around to uploading my Phuket Vlog. In June I got to visit Big Buddha and Wat Chalong which are beautifully located in Phuket and quite close to one another. Being a buddhist, it was a beautiful and special moment for me to be able to see the Big Buddha and just being in a wonderful Thailand. Wat Chalong is the biggest temple in Phuket and there is no entry fee for Wat Chalong or Big Buddha. The beautiful thing about tourism in Thailand is that most places are free and Thai people are such kind and helpful people. Please visit Big Buddha and Wat Chalong if you are ever in Phuket!
BIG BUDDHA - A MUST SEE IN PHUKET THAILAND

Phuket Thailand is a paradise that seems to have something for everyone. If you want to enjoy a private romantic vacation there are many beaches and parts of the city that can accommodate you.
If you want to experience your spirituality there are several incredible temples where you can enjoy the beauty of their architecture as well as find peace within yourself.
Phuket also has a very large party district and several blocks on Bangla Road that will allow you to have fun seven nights a week.
The food is probably the biggest attraction - not only in Phuket - but in Thailand as a whole. There are at least two amazing outside food markets. One is open seven days a week and is next to the Jungceylon Shopping Center. The other is in Old Town Phuket but is only open on the weekends. In any event, no matter what your taste buds desire you will most likely be able to find it in Phuket. I was even able to find several places that serve fantastic American Style Breakfasts.
Phuket is a fun city. It is believed to be the most expensive area in Thailand, however, there are still many places to find good deals on food, entertainment, and souvenirs.
If you have a chance, definitely check out Phuket, Thailand.

Phuket City Travel Guide
This is my trip to Phuket, Thailand. Phuket is among the world’s finest beach destinations, with fine white sands, nodding palm trees, glittering seas and lively towns. It has something for any taste and budget, with hundreds of hotels to choose from, a wide choice of dining and partying options.
- Karon View Point
Karon Viewpoint (which used to be Kata viewpoint) is one of the most frequented viewpoints in Phuket. From here, it is possible to take in views of Kata Noi, Kata Yai and Karon beaches. Located between Nai Harn and Kata Noi beaches, the viewpoint is busy most days of the year and is a staple of many tour itineraries.
- Karon Beach
Karon Beach features the third-longest beach on Phuket Island. Located on the west coast, between Patong to the north and Kata to the south, Karon Beach is the one of the most popular holiday destinations in Phuket. The beach itself has excellent snorkelling (and even diving) spots at its southern end and is wide enough for beachgoers to never feel crowded.
- Promthep Cape
Promthep Cape is one of the island's most photographed and perhaps best-known locations. Every evening, large tour buses, scooters and private cars sweep through Rawai Beach and up the island's southernmost hill in order to watch the sunset at its peak
- Big Buddha
The 45-m. marble Buddha statue on a mountaintop offers panoramic views, a cafe & gift shop.Phuket's Big Buddha is one of the most important and revered landmarks on the island. The huge image sits on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong and Kata and, at 45 metres tall, can be seen from as far away as Phuket Town and Karon Beach.
- Wat Chalong
The most important of the 29 buddhist temples of Phuket is Wat Chalong or formally Wat Chaiyathararam, located in the Chalong Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District. Wat Chalong has been extending a warm welcome to visitors for over a century. Locals come to pray and Westerners come to learn something about Buddhism.

Big Buddha Phuket - Thailand - Phuket's Big Buddha Statue
Big Buddha Phuket - Thailand - Phuket's Big Buddha Statue
The Phuket Big Buddha is a popular travel destination for tourists and for Thais.
It is located in the middle of Phuket, so it is not far for people to travel when staying on Phuket Island.
They are still building the Buddha Statue but all the temples and main attractions are easily accessible.
Since it is high on the hill, the drive up there is also a great way to see areas of Phuket.
There is a also a lookout to Chalong Bay, which is on the east side of Phuket.
Well worth a visit if you are going to Phuket.
