Phuket Vegetarian Festival Food. Food in Thailand
Food in Thailand. Phuket Vegetarian Festival Food. Subscribe: NEW THAILAND VIDEOS EVERY WEDNESDAY.
Phuket Thailand Vegetarian Festival 2016. เทศกาลกินเจ Thailand Vlog. The Vegetarian Festival is held annually in Thailand in Phuket, Krabi and many other parts of the south. This video will give you some details about the 2016 Vegetarian Festival, the food, the rituals, the dates and show some scenes I have filmed at the Vegetarian Festival in previous years.
For all the schedule and location details of this year's festival in Phuket check out this link here:
The Vegetarian Festival, also known as the Festival of Ngan Kin Jeh, begins every year, in October, on the first day of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The event is celebrated by the Chinese-Thai community in many parts of Southern Thailand including Krabi, Songkhla, Trang and Phuket. Despite it's name, vegetarian food is not the central focus for the festival, but the white clothed devotees attending do adhere to a strict vegetarian diet for the 9 days of the event. This practice cleanses the spirit and makes merit.
Some participants engage in a number of extraordinary activities such as fire-walking over glowing coals, climbing ladders with rungs made of sharpened blades, piercing different parts of their bodies with various objects, and slicing their tongues with knives and swords. Those participating in the piercings and other activities (mah songs) prepare for the festival by abstaining from meat, alcohol and sex for the previous six days. The mah song say that they feel no pain during their actions, as they are possessed by the spirits of the Nine Emperor Gods, who protect them from any harm or scarring. The mah song are carefully chosen and their role is to bring good luck to, and scare evil spirits away from the community by their fearless acts.
Many types of objects are used in the piercings, I've seen people pierced with beach umbrellas, garden tools, flowers, palm leaves, swords and many other things. Seeing this live gives a fascinating insight into Thai culture and traditions, and you'll certainly remember this part of your Thai holidays. I think it's one of the bloody best things to do in Phuket and Krabi Thailand.
The origin of the Vegetarian Festival goes back a century and a half to a time when Phuket was populated by many Chinese people working in the tin mine. To cater to the entertainment needs of the huge Chinese population, Chinese opera performers were hired. During the ninth Chinese lunar month there was an outbreak of an epidemic in Phuket that claimed several lives, and the performers also fell seriously ill. It was eventually reasoned that this outbreak was occurred because the Chinese community had forgotten to pay homage to the Nine Emperor Gods (Kiu Ong Iah) in the first nine days of the month. One of the performers was asked to go back to China and invite the Kiu Ong Iah to Phuket. After completing the appropriate rituals those afflicted with the disease made a complete recovery.
The following year, to make sure that there was no repeat of the epidemic of the previous year, and to keep the Gods happy, the Chinese refrained from having meat, alcohol and sex. The epidemic passed and every year since then people in Phuket and other parts of Southern Thailand have continued to celebrate this festival.

Local Phuket food Project
Three students from Ban Maireab school in Kathu, Phuket, interviewed some restaurant owners in Phuket Town and Kathu about local Phuket food's origins and ingredients for their school project. Subtitled in English, the project's aim is to promote Phuket's unique cuisine, with it's Chinese and Malayan influence for foreigners who may be unaware that there is such a thing as 'local Phuket cuisine'.

Phuket Thailand Fruit Market
Phuket Thailand Fruit Market
One of my favorite activities in Phuket is go to the open markets, the open markets are really fun to visit, if you love fresh veggies, seafood and fruits this is the place to go. Markets are located all over Phuket at different locations throughout the week. My favorite is the one here, which is located in Kata Beach. I run into a lot of Phuket chefs when I go to the market, quite a few of the restaurants in Phuket pick out there fresh produce for cooking.
Have you ever been to a Phuket open market? If you haven't, please do so, they are a lot of fun to visit and you can really see some of Thailands most famous foods. Yeah, you can just go to the local grocery store and get just about everything you need, but nothing beats an open market experience.
Open markets are located all over Phuket on any given day; you just have to do your research. Once you get to the market it is very easy to get overwhelmed, but think of it as saving a bunch of cash and really getting some fresh food, you could literally saves hundreds of Baht by using the market.
So my advice to you is, when you are in Phuket, find an open market and enjoy all the wonderful foods from Thailand, it really is a joy.
Thank you so much for stopping by and check back often for more of my Phuket videos. Do you love Phuket as much as I do? Check out my new addition to Phuketdining.com; the Phuket Dreamer where you will see tons more pictures and stories about this wonderful Island in paradise.
Sincerely,
