Hiking in the Piatra Craiului National Forest in Romania
Romania seems to many one of the least likely places to visit for an amazing outdoor holiday. We were pleased to be surprised with the discovery that this country is filled with pristine national forests, beautiful countryside, and places where traditional life still exists.
For over a week we backpacked through Brasov, Bran, and the Piatra Craiului national park, where brown bears and wolves still roam the mountains. Traditional villages pepper the park and it's not uncommon to see locals traveling via horse and cart or working the land by hand.

Hiking Piatra Craiului National Park in Romania | Romania travel vlog
Myron takes another hike - this time in Romania's Piatra Craiului National Park. Parts of the walk were fairly steep but overall it was an easy hike up to a beautiful open and green plateau.

Romanian Carpathians - Piatra Craiului
Piatra Craiului is the most beautifully prominent mountain ridge in the Carpathians. Its almost vertical limestone cliffs has always been regarded highly, which is reflected in the name of the mountains that translates as the Royal Rock, or King's Stone. A wonderful sequence of limestone arches on the NW wall of the Piatra Craiului, above the spot called LaZaplaz are also known as Deubel holes. Together with huge limestone window La Cerdacul Stanciului rank among the most spectacular works of nature art in the Carpathians. The highest summit, La Om or Piscul Baciului is 2,239m high. A total number of 1170 plant species, which is about 30% of the superior plants in Romania, have been identified in Piatra Craiului National park. This is the only place in the world, where the Piatra Craiului Carnation (Dianthus Callizonus) grows. Over 40% of the 100 mammal's species found in Romania live here. The chamois is typical representative. The mountains are dotted with characteristic refuges, most of which look like halved soccer balls. The most convenient base for the North Ridge area is a place called Plaiul Foii, where a hut has stood for over a century. The whole region has been declared a natural reservation since 1938. In 1990 Piatra Craiului was declared a National Park.

Dracula castle - Bran, Transylvania, Romania
The Bran Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Romania. The legend saying that the castle was the famous Count Dracula’s home is definitely the reason why so many tourists visit the castle. Bran is also one of the best conserved and impressive medieval castles in Romania and it served as a regal home. It’s only one step away from Brasov, placed in a dreamy natural setting.
The medieval building from Bran was built in the 14th century for military purposes and has been altered many times along the ages. In 1920, Queen Mary of Romania receives the construction from the authorities of Brasov. It was given to her as a sign of gratitude for her contribution to the Great Union of 1918. Queen Mary turns the building into the fairytale castle we know today. The construction still has a lot of elements of medieval gothic architecture which give the castle a mysterious and fascinating flavor.
The castle’s visitors can also see ceramics exhibits, hunting trophies, vintage furniture and weapons and armours. Also, you can visit Queen Mary’s bedroom, King’s Ferdinand bedroom, the music saloon and the library, to name some of the numerous rooms open to the public. And the bonus is the castle’s terrace where you can admire a wonderful view over the surroundings.
After learning about both history and legends, don’t miss a walk through the Bran resort. You can start climbing the paths that take you to the Bran Pass or you can make a stop at one of the traditional restaurants for a rich meal and a glass of red wine.
Transylvania, Romania Travel Video
Transylvania, Romania Travel Video - Locals sometimes shake their heads over the ‘Dracula connection’, but there’s no denying a sense of spookiness about this broad, mountainous, culturally rich region, which fills the bulk of Romania’s centre. But really the Dracula thing is such a small part of a visit here, and you’re likely to forget about it along the way. Saxon towns such as Sighişoara, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca and Braşov evoke medieval life; all make fine hubs, with hikes, ski runs, horse markets and cute villages within an hour or two. Much of the fun comes from hikes through the interlocking Carpathians (sometimes called the Transylvanian Alps), which create a U-shape on all of Transylvania’s sides but the north. Skiing is best in the Bucegi Mountains’ Prahova Valley, but outdoors enthusiasts debate what’s best for summer fun –hiking to underground rivers of the Apuseni, rock climbing at Piatra Craiului National Park, biking atop the flat Bucegi plateau, exploring the largely unknown Retezat or hiking the knee-torturing Făgăraş.
Transylvania, part of Romania only since 1918, benefits from its diverse ancestors. Saxons occupied southern Transylvanian towns, and most villages you pass are dotted with fortified churches that date back half a millennium. Going an hour north into Székely Land and towns like Târgu Mureş (Marosvásárhely) with sizeable ethnic Hungarian communities, feels like going into a different country. Throughout you’re likely to spot many Roma villagers – identifiable by black cowboy hats on the men and extravagant red dresses on the women – who sometimes usher passers-by in for meals.
So much is in Transylvania – it’s no surprise that it’s often the only part of Romania experienced by tourists.
‘We are in Transylvania; and Transylvania is not England. Our ways are not your ways, and there shall be to you many strange things.’

Charity Challenge Trek Transyvania - This trek takes place in Romania's famed Transylvanian Alps. A small and lightly-populated region of the country, it is nevertheless rich in tradition and myths. In this trek, you are able to wmake contact with locals; sleep in small mountain villages, taste traditional food, whilst treking in two of the highest mountain ranges of Romania. You can also visit the 14th century Romanian icon, Dracula's Castle. This beautiful castle was fabulously renovated in the 19th century by the royal family of Romania. You will awill also have the chance to to visit the Bucegi Mountains, famed for their rock formations, as well Piatra Craiului, 'The King's Rock' National Park, which is now home to the Carpathian Large Carnivore Project (protecting wolves, lynx and bears).
Overall, this is a challenging yet very rewarding expedition, the Trek through the Transylvania Alps is also a trip back in time, to an area where tradition still guides people's lives and where nature is wild.
