Places to see in ( Grosseto - Italy ) Piazza Dante
Piazza Dante , also known as Piazza delle Catene , is the main square of Grosseto , home to the most important buildings in the city. The square, with its characteristic trapezoidal shape, is made up of two areas that are connected to one another, without interruptions, in front of the churchyard of the cathedral . The main area of the square is between the southern right side of the cathedral, the main facade of Palazzo Aldobrandeschi and the arcade of the arcades that is structured seamlessly on the southern and western sides. At the center of a slightly raised area, under which there was a cistern, is the monument to the Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine, which rises on the spot where in the past centuries there must have been the well of the corresponding cistern below. The area that contains the underground cistern is bounded by a series of columns and chains, which led the Grossetani to call piazza delle Catene this section of Piazza Dante.
The other smaller surface area, Piazza Duomo, which constitutes it, extends between the churchyard of the cathedral, the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Alben, a building with a loggia that was built in the years immediately following the Second World War in place of the ancient Palazzo dei Priori . At the northern end of the square Corso Carducci begins , the main street of the historic center that leads to the Porta Nuova area ; at the south-eastern end of the square the Ricasoli road originates, leading to Piazza del Sale in front of Porta Vecchia .
The presence of a platea communis in Grosseto is documented starting from 1222. The original square was made up of a smaller space than the current one between the ancient parish church of Santa Maria , erected in the cathedral in 1138 with the transfer to Grosseto of the Episcopal See of Roselle , commissioned by Pope Innocent II , and the original nucleus of the municipal building.
In the following centuries the square underwent a period of severe decay and even the passage under the Medici managed to improve the conditions of the square. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were in fact the darkest for the city of Grosseto, now reduced to very few units and used as a fort or prison for its strategic position. It was not until the mid- eighteenth century , when the Grand Duchy of Tuscany came under the control of the Lorraine , that new works of redevelopment were undertaken in the city, beginning with the urban decorum.
The cathedral of San Lorenzo , or simply a cathedral, is located on the north-eastern side of the square, with its façade overlooking Piazza Duomo. The church was built between 1294 and 1302 on a project by the architect Sozzo di Rustichino, in the place where previously stood the high-medieval church of Santa Maria. Works of completion were then carried out between 1330 and 1340, and finally the structure was rebuilt in the sixteenth century by Anton Maria Lari. Further renovations between 1840 and 1865 have subsequently changed the Renaissance appearance of the building, in an attempt to bring it back to the primitive medieval forms.
The Palazzo Comunale is located on the northern side of Piazza Duomo. It houses the junta, the council and the administrative offices of the Municipality of Grosseto. The Aldobrandeschi palace , or more commonly the province palace, bounds Piazza Dante to the east. The building was built starting on April 5, 1900, after the demolition of the Pretorio building, which took place in the autumn of the previous year.
The Alben Palace is located on the west side of Piazza Duomo, opposite the cathedral. The palace was built between 1948 and 1950 on the site of the medieval Palazzo dei Priori , demolished between 1937 and 1938 by the Fascist government who wanted to build the headquarters of the National Fascist Institute of Social Security. The presence of a column of the Bandi in the square is attested to 1617.

Grosseto

Places to see in ( Grosseto - Italy )
Grosseto is the out-of-the-way provincial capital of the Maremma, situated 14 km from the sea coast. It’s overlooked by the majority of tourists as there are no major sights here. But it’s a pleasant place with a nice central square and a well organised archeological museum filled with Etruscan artefacts.
Grossed played an important part in the history of Maremma in Tuscany. From an historical point of view, its most interesting attractions are the city walls. They were rebuilt by the Medici in the 16th century and are still in good shape today. The Archeological Museum is worth a visit too. Recently renovated, it has a small but nicely organised collection that focuses on the finds made at the nearby Etruscan city of Rosselle.
At the heart of the city is Dante Alighieri square, a mock medieval space where you’ll find the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, remodelled in the 19th century in neo Romanesque-Gothic style. The Palazzo Aldobrandeschi is here too, built in 1903 in a style that evokes Sienese Medieval architecture. The statue of Leopoldo II Lorena (1846) has an interesting story. It shows the struggle against malaria (the snake) and celebrates the”enlightened” ruler that helped Maremma to fight against it.
The square is a pleasant place for a stroll or an aperitivo. There are many shops under the loggia and along one of the most lively streets – Corso Carducci – that leads up to the square dominated by the cathedral. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo might look Medieval but it’s not. The only surviving decorative elements that are original are the four symbols of the evangelists that stand on the cornice in front of the buttresses. Inside, some of the glass windows are the originals from 1400. Look out for the splendidly carved baptismal font and the painting “Madonna delle Grazie” (1470) by Matteo di Giovanni.
Church of San Francesco – the altar cross (1280-83) is attributed to the young Duccio di Buoninsegna. It shows impressive realism in the depiction of the body of Christ. City walls – The 2900 meter long city walls have been turned into a tree lined walk way. There are six bastions (the fortress incorporates the medieval tower still visible today), and of the gates, the southern one is the eldest, dating from the 14th century. Until 1757 the walls were surrounded by a moat connected to a series of canals so that goods could be transported by boat.
Museo Archeologico e dell’Arte della Maremma – The museum spans the entire spectrum of Etruscan culture. There are exhibits of artefacts from the Villanova period (10th-8th c.) excavated in Vetulonia, and objects unearthed in Talamone, Sovana and Pitigliano, On the third floor there’s a museum of sacred art, mainly Medieval. The last rooms have a brief history of the city.
The area around Grosseto offers unspoiled beaches bordered by pine forests and peaceful countryside where agriturismi have flourished in the past few decades. The Uccellina Natural Park is just a few kilometers away. Castiglione della Pescaia is one of the most attractive coastal towns in Tuscany.
