Places to see in ( Montepulciano - Italy ) Piazza Grande a Montepulciano
Piazza Grande in Montepulciano is certainly to be counted among the most beautiful squares in Italy. Here we find a beautiful Cathedral, an almost copy of the Palazzo della Signoria in Florence, a well with the Medici coat of arms designed by Sangallo, and some of the most beautiful buildings in Montepulciano designed by the best Renaissance architects such as Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, Michelozzo Michelozzi and Scalza Hippolytus.
Today all the main events of Montepulciano take place or end in Piazza Grande starting from the Bravio delle Botti ... and ending with the Christmas markets. The center of civic and social life in Montepulciano is the beautiful monumental square known as Piazza Grande. It sits at the highest point of the city and offers one of the precious few flat expanses in this hill town known for its sloped streets. The atmosphere here is lively with the sidewalk cafes, a cozy space enclosed within the ring of elegant buildings.
This piazza is home to Montepulciano's cathedral and its most important palazzi that had been built by the city's most influential families. The Palazzo Comunale, or town hall, with its clock tower, bears a striking resemblance to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, by design and order of Cosimo de Medici. Climb the tower for a stunning view of the Tuscan countryside. Palazzo Contucci was a stately Renaissance residence for that noble family with its internal courtyard and frescoed Sala della Festa, by Andrea Pozzo. It is still owned by the Contucci family, who helped make Vino Nobile di Montepulciano a grand wine. You can visit the family winery here. That palace, like the Palazzo Ricci, was designed by Sangallo the Elder. The travertine Palazzo Nobile Tarugi was the seat of the Tarugi family, a glorious Renaissance structure with portico that was renovated by da Vignola.
The elegance of the Piazza Grande is contrasted with the rough brick facade of the Duomo. Started in 1570, it wasn't finished until 1680, and even then the facade that had been designed for the building was never completed. The unadorned brick gives the church a more ancient look. Step inside, however, and you'll find a glorious, airy church. Don't miss the baptismal font to the left, backed by a beautiful, vivid painted terra cotta sculpture by Della Robbia. The stunning triptych is another highlight, by Taddeo di Bartolo.
In the piazza you'll also find the fancy fountain called Il Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni, a glorified water well that is topped by an architrave that is accented by the lions holding a crest with the Medici family symbol on one side the iris of Florence on the other. It is further decorated with the griffin symbol.

*********

The city of Montepulciano has a past tied in part to two important regional cross roads (From Chiusi to Arezzo running south to north, and from the Valdorcia to the Valdichiana and to Trasimeno running east to west) and its strategic position at the border of the area of influence of various powerful, medieval based cities (Orvieto, Perugia, Siena, Florence). This happened in the first centuries of the second millennium when its riches and power were considerably developed, to the point of the city becoming a desired prey and acquired for itself of an appreciable autonomy that can be clearly seen in its alliance with the leading cities around it which were in perennial conflict among themselves.
Unfortunately its final entrance in the Florentine state, after 1511, although it developed an important style (which is reflected in the important public and private buildings realised after that date and the establishment of the diocese in 1561) it suffered a slow economic and social decline, and at one point in the 18th century the Granduke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo became concerned, and looked into ways to give back some life to the very prestigious centre that had started to decay. In the 19th century the drainage of the Valdichiana renewed the importance of the city and it became the administration centre of the area signalling an appreciable revitalization, however this did not last beyond the middle of the 20th century. A population loss in the valley due to immigration to the north of many farmers who were transformed into the workforce for factories, and the changing ways of cultivating the land, which has not been completely compensated for by a similar growth of the small and medium industrial businesses. The prestigious art and history of the city has again an appreciable fascination also at a international level, and by this it is hoped, that Montepulciano will be able to make itself known as a centre of cultural development.

New Years Eve Bonfire in Piazza Grande, Montepulciano, Italy, 31st December 2013
Every New Years Eve the Montepulciano community brings firewood into Piazza Grande, stacks it two stories high with a Christmas tree on top, using tractors and cranes. Around 9pm the stack of wood is lit on fire to warm the crowd while a live band takes the stage. The fire lasts beyond the Prosecco (not Champagne) celebration and fireworks at midnight. Fifteen hours later, the next day, the core of the ashes was still glowing orange and radiating heat all around.

Montepulciano Town Hall, Montepulciano, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Town Hall of Montepulciano rises on the western side of the Piazza Grande. Work began at the end of the 14th century and continued until 1440 with the construction of the Florentine-style façade attributed to Michelozzo, at the center of which rises the civic tower. The ground floor of the prospectus is covered in ashlar, while the upper levels are in travertine; the crowning is a protruding gallery with Guelph battlement. Inside there is a courtyard with two superimposed loggias.
