Perugia is the capital city of both the region of Umbria in central Italy, crossed by the river Tiber, and of the province of Perugia. The city is located about 164 kilometres (102 miles) north of Rome and 148 km (92 miles) south-east of Florence. It covers a high hilltop and part of the valleys around the area. The region of Umbria is bordered by Tuscany, Lazio, and Marche.

Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Places to see in ( Perugia - Italy ) Piazza IV Novembre
Piazza IV Novembre is located in the historic center of Perugia , and as Serafino Siepi wrote , it is the most beautiful and most ancient square in the city, central to it. The asymmetric square opens up to the convergence of the five road axes that structure the medieval city and for its scenography has represented in every age the privileged place of urban functions: here was placed the ancient forum and there are preserved monuments connected to the plant urban planning of the Etruscan-Roman city.
Formerly the site of the ancient Roman Forum , it became the converging fulcrum in the High Middle Ages and the starting point for the five main city streets, the Gifts Streets. In the tenth century the Episcopal see was transferred to the new temple of San Lorenzo, and the square has qualified as a representative space for political and religious power, a role confirmed later by the establishment of the municipal government buildings.
The current structure is that defined with the restructuring of the Platea Comunis or Magna (space between the cathedral and today's Piazza della Repubblica ), commissioned by the municipality and implemented between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, according to a specific urban project aimed at redevelop the city acropolis, the fulcrum of the collective life of the municipal society. The intervention focused on the enlargement of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and on the construction of the Palazzo dei Priori . The square changed its appearance in 1591 when the papal legate Domenico Pinellithere opened a new and wider access road (the current Via Calderini). The urban scene is characterized by the natural slopes of the land and on the square overlook the major city monuments.
At the center of the square is the Fontana Maggiore , the urban and visual center of the square. Work of the second half of the '200 by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano for the design and decoration, with the technical and architectural collaboration of Fra Bevignate and, for the hydraulic part, of Boninsegna Veneziano . The decorations evoke, in the complex iconological message, the political and cultural program of the Perugian Commune.
On the square, high on a flight of steps, you can admire the side of the cathedral of San Lorenzo showing off the precious pink marbles. The travertine portal is by Ippolito Scalza, designed by Galeazzo Alessi . The above- mentioned aedicule houses a crucifix by Polidoro Ciburri placed in 1540, emblem of the resistance of Perugia in the Salt War against Pope Paul III . On the left of the portal there is a bronze statue of Pope Julius III created by Vincenzo Danti , while on the right side stands a precious fifteenth-century pulpit, known as San Bernardino da Siena, from which the holy man preached many times in 1425 and 1427.
On the opposite side stands the Palazzo dei Priori , an impressive example of Gothic architecture. The articulation of the volumes, the asymmetries and the irregularity of the system, highlight the long construction phase, which lasted from 1293-97 to 1443, and the use of pre-existing building structures. The building is home to the Municipality of Perugia and the National Gallery of Umbria . The fan steps go up to a large portal that gives access to the Sala dei Notari . At the top, resting on shelves, they place the copies of the griffin griffin and the Guelph lion, the two symbols of the city, whose originals are inside the building. The Palazzo dei Priori, extends along Corso Vannucci , and on the ground floor there is the hall of theCollegio della Mercanzia and the Collegio del Cambio .
