Piazza Navona, Rome Italy a pedestrian area. It was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, a giant stadium that would hold 15.000 -20.000 people, which was used for athletic contests and some festivals. Piazza Navona is very likely to be the second favorite square in Rome after Saint Peter's square. Originally Piazza Navona was called agones like the games that were held there. The stadium was also known as Circus Agonalis which means competition arena. Later it was called in agone, then navone and finally navona.

PIAZZA NAVONA - DOMITIAN'S STADIUM SITE - ROME
PIAZZA NAVONA USE TO BE THE SITE OF DOMITIAN'S STADIUM IN ROME ITALY. Located in the historic center of Rome, just west of the Pantheon. This Baroque square, is the remains of what was once a stadium called Circus Domitianus, built in 85 AD to host ancient Greek Agonal games (a competition arena). Ordered by emperor Domitian, the younger son of Vespasian that built the Colosseum.
The piazza itself took its shape as the stadium's building crumbled over time and by builders that used the stone to construct other structures. Just The arena itself which was larger than the Colosseum’s measured 787 feet long and 213 feet wide with it’s bleachers around 3 sides the overall measurement was 905 feet long and 348 feet wide with a height of 100 feet above ground level.and held 30,000 spectators. The remains of the ancient stadium lie 15 feet under Piazza Navona today, Indeed, all the buildings that faces the square today lay their foundations on the bleachers’ ruins. Hence the long, oval shape of the square we see today. In the fifteenth century the stadium was paved over to create the Navona square, but thanks to the discovery and scavi excavations in 1936 the remnants of the stadium are still visible around the area but mostly underground where Guided tours are available.The tours start at Piazza Tor Sanguigna 13.
Unique in that it is extremely long when compared to other Piazzas.
Today its Considered one of Rome's most beautiful squares, with its three fountains.
Fontana del Nettuno (Neptune fountain) at the northern end
also known as the Calderari, was built in 1576 by Giacomo della Porta. The statues of Neptune surrounded by sea figures were added in the nineteenth century. Neptune is shown slauing an octopus. In the center of Piazza Navona is the largest fountain the Fountain of the Four Rivers, Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi with a 52 feet high Egyptian obelisk that was originally located at the Circus of Maxentius, near the old Appian Way. The dove representing the Holy Spirit on top of the obelisk represents the Catholic Church commitment of evangelism through the world.
The design of the fountain was Bernini. It features four statue figures, at the base of a rock supporting the obelisk, each figure representing a river from a different continent - the Nile, Ganges, Danube and Rio de la Plata.
It was constructed between 1647 and 1651 at the request of pope Innocent X. Another highlight at Navona square is the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. Commissioned in 1652 by Pope Innocent X and built on the site where according to legend, St. Agnes was Martyred for her Christian beliefs.
Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, right in front of the building. It was completed in 1670.
The Fontana del Moro (Moor fountain) at the southern end of the square.
Giacomo della Porta also built the Fontana del Moro. The central statue of a Moor holding a dolphin, a design by Bernini, was added in the seventeenth century. The tritons are nineteenth-century additions. Pope Innocent X started a tradition of covering the drains of the three fountains on Saturdays and Sundays in the 1600s, to allow people to enjoy the pooled water. It became known as Lake of Piazza Navona. This tradition lasted for two centuries until 1866 when Pius IX put an end to the summer fun.
Yoday it's Considered by many to be Rome's second-favorite square after Saint Peter's and there are a variety of cafes and restaurants, as well as souvenir vendors, artists, and entertainers, attracting tourists and Romans. it also hosts a Christmas market each year that is popular with residents and tourists, but especially children.

Piazza Navona - Rome, Italy
Piazza Navona is a piazza in Rome, Italy. It is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, built in 1st century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium. The ancient Romans went there to watch the agones (games), and hence it was known as Circus Agonalis (competition arena). It is believed that over time the name changed to in avone to navone and eventually to navona.
It features important sculptural and architectural creations: in the center stands the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, topped by the Obelisk of Domitian, brought in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius; the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Francesco Borromini, Girolamo Rainaldi, Carlo Rainaldi and others; and the aforementioned Pamphili palace, also by Girolamo Rainaldi, that accommodates the long gallery designed by Borromini and frescoed by Pietro da Cortona.
Piazza Navona has two other fountains. At the southern end is the Fontana del Moro with a basin and four Tritons sculpted by Giacomo della Porta (1575) to which, in 1673, Bernini added a statue of a Moor, or African, wrestling with a dolphin. At the northern end is the Fountain of Neptune (1574) also created by Giacomo della Porta; the statue of Neptune, by Antonio Della Bitta, was added in 1878 to create a balance with La Fontana del Moro.
At the southwest end of the piazza is the ancient 'speaking' statue of Pasquino, erected in 1501. Romans could leave lampoons or derogatory social commentary attached to the statue.

Piazza Navona is one of the most famous and arguably the most beautiful of Rome's many squares - surely it is one of my favore places on earth.
I shot this using a Canon 80D and a Sony RX100 III. All hand held.

Amigos, continuamos el tour por Roma que dejamos en el video pasado cuando exploramos el Vaticano. De ahí nos dirigimos a las Escaleras de España, después caminaremos hacia el Panteón de Agrippa y de ahí a la Piazza Navona y un par de iglesias como Santa Maria Sopra Minerva y San Ignacio Loyola. Finalizaremos con una cena en Campo dei Fiori, que es una plaza muy bonita y típica para la gente que vive por la zona. Todo este recorrido lo hicimos caminando y espere les guste como recomendación de cosas que pueden ver y que vale mucho la pena conocer aquí en Roma.
