STORYLINE:
The guns - and the border guards who toted them - are now only a memory.
So is the Iron Curtain that split the town of Gorizia between Italy and Yugoslavia after World War II.
Fifty-seven years later, the border is hard to spot - just a worn stone markers, a thin iron fence, or a fading white line on a house that straddled the frontier.
Yugoslavia has vanished, and the country across the border is now Slovenia.
The fence which divided the Piazzale della Transalpina between the two towns has now been removed and works are about to finish to host the ceremony of May 1, when Slovenia and nine other mostly ex-communist newcomers join the European Union.
Preparations are in full swing for that historic day.
Gorizia and its Slovenian side, Nova Gorica, will be awash in street festivals, and are sending a joint team to compete in a soccer tournament pitting new and old E-U members against each other.
We want to profit from the new importance of the geographical position of the two towns. From May 1st we are going to be the centre of the new Europe with 25 countries, says Vittorio Brancati, Gorizia's Italian mayor.
In Gorizia's case, the boundary drawn by the Allies on February 10, 1947 probably did some initial good.
Atrocities during and immediately after World War II - by Italian fascists, then by Slovene partisans - had poisoned relations.
But for many, the new border exacerbated the pain.
Parents were split from their children.
A wife visiting her parents found herself unable to return to her husband on what was suddenly the Slovene side.
The border arbitrarily put living rooms in Italy and kitchens in Slovenia.
They paid with their lives.

Traveling to different places is always fun, but it kinda became normal to me - I still get very excited about going somewhere in the unknown, but it feels so special when friends from abroad come to visit me in my hometown. This time they came for our traditional breaking event, International Streetdance Battle held in the city of Koper. Was good to have Tim (Holland), Masta (Spain), D. Ruffy & No Spine (Germany) over here :)
