Places to see in ( Ostuni - Italy ) Piazza della Liberta
The consolidation and restoration of the medieval walls of Ostuni and the palimpsests that have taken place over the centuries, has given rise to a problem of large scale represented by the protection of minute historical evidence, such as mortar and lime layers, entirely erased on a stretch of Viale Oronzo forty-one kilometer long. The historical events related to the construction of the ancient walls of Ostuni refer to the messapi, the Byzantines, the Normans, the Angevins and the Aragonese. The latter, probably after the earthquake of 1456, reinforced the curtains and towers of the previous period and extended the defensive perimeter towards noon.
The Aragonese walls that encircled Ostuni along the stretch located to the southwest were in fact built in the late fifteenth century and in the first years of the sixteenth century on a project drawn up by trusted architects of King Alfonso of Aragon. They incorporated the village called Croce delle Palme, the convent of the conventual Franciscans, the church of Ognissanti and numerous other buildings. In the new stretch of walls two important city gates were opened: one was called Porta San Francesco, near the convent of the convent, or port of Iuso, and the other took the name of Porta del Ponte, bordered on the sides by two imposing towers with a drawbridge in the middle. The main tower has recently been brought to light by the Archaeological Superintendency, engaged in carrying out a campaign of excavations on the entire area of Piazza della Libertà.
The walls and the Aragonese towers were surrounded by deep ditches and to defend them there were troops that housed in the military quarter, built at the end of the sixteenth century, which housed a cavalry and an infantry corps. The imposing city defense system began to be dismantled from the early decades of the eighteenth century, when the population increase and the increased need for new building land, determined an impetuous urban growth most felt in the second half of the century.
To increase the income and to face the universal weights, that is to say taxes, the city administrators began the massive division of the walls and the ancient ditches, provoking for the most part the demolition of the old defensive structures and the incorporation of the same in new buildings. On October 9, 1724, in the presence of the mayor of that year, the magnificent Antonio Anglani, and the elect, Mr. Francesco Ayroldi and Mr. Nicola Maria Antelmi, were sold to private citizens almost all the land along the line of the ancient walls that ran from the Porta del Ponte to the Lopez y Rojo palace.

Ostuni is a city and comune, located about 8 km from the coast, in the province of Brindisi, region of Apulia, Italy. The town has a population of about 32,000 during the winter, but can swell to 100,000 inhabitants during summer. Ostuni is a beautiful city in southern Italy. Its charming white houses spread out over the top of three hills and offer great views over the sea below.
A maze of streets and alley ways lead you through the narrow streets of Ostuni. The bright white buildings and jewel bright skies not to mention the many views of the Adriatic Sea which is just 8km away give Ostuni more the feel of a Greek than an Italian city. Not too suprising perhaps since it is only 70km from Greece and, like the rest of southern Italy was once part of the Greek empire.
With its hilltop location the gleaming white city of Ostuni can be seen from miles around and even if it wasn't on your route you will be drawn to it once you have spotted it. You won't be disappointed. As you enter the outskirts you are rewarded by the sight of some of the unusual trulli cottages that dot this area. With their conical roofs and white walls they look like something from a fairy-tale.
Onwards into the old town and the streets meander and twist upwards to the 15th century cathedral built in Gothic style. At the heart of Ostuni is the Piazza della Liberta with its statue of Sant Oronzo reputed to have saved Ostuni from the plague in 1657.
The cathedral has a very unusual shape with concave and convex lines. It also has a lovely rose window with 24 carved sections representing the hours of the day. The Bishop's Palace was built in the 16th century and has an ornate bridge connecting the palace to the Cathedral cloisters. The San Vito Martire is a very ornate Baroque style chuch built in the late 18th century. From the northeastern edge of town you get magnificent views over the sea and a large expanse of ancient olive trees.
Olive oil tasting tours are particularly popular with visitors as the olive oil here is of a particularly fine quality and the ancient olive groves are well worth seeing. Ostuni is a popular town with summer visitors but it also has the 5th largest British population in Italy. The last few days of August are a good time to visit as the town celebrates the festival of San Ostuni and there is a large parade of horses and riders dressed in red sequined outfits. The parade is popular so get there early to find a good position. Ostuni is only 8km from the coast and the beaches of Lido Morelli, Torre Pozzella and the Nature Reserve of Torre Guaceto are all worth visiting.

Apertura Ciccio Pastigel in Piazza Ostuni 2014

Ostuni City Hall, Ostuni, Brindisi, Apulia, Italy, Europe
The complex of San Francesco, built by the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi and the homonymous convent (now Palazzo Municipale) is located near Piazza della Libertà, in Ostuni. The facade of the Church of San Francesco owes its appearance to interventions carried out in the nineteenth century; in it are merged medieval, baroque and neoclassical architectural elements. The life of St. Francis is represented in the bronze door, while the statues of St. Francis and St. Anthony are still on the façade. The church of San Francesco has a single nave; the polychrome high altar is very beautiful. The facade of the monastery was modified in the same period as that of the church, to give the structure an artistic homogeneity. The rooms of the former monastery develop on two floors; on the first floor there were the friars' rooms, while on the ground floor there were the spaces used by all the monks. Following the suppression of the monastic orders during the Napoleonic domination, the monastery became Palazzo di Città.
