You can be forgiven if you didn't know about Pichavaram mangrove forest, despite it being one of the world's largest mangrove jungles (along with the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal and Bhitarkanika in Odisha). After all, it's not on the tourist trail. However, this remarkable and fascinating place is definitely worth visiting. This is a beautiful backwater place, flowing through forests of mangroove, located near Chidambaram ! So, its a boat ride through canals of backwaters, amidst this forest. The sight is delight to any nature lover. Bird watching can be enjoyed as well.
But unfortunately, there are no proper facilities available, like a good restaurant, seating arrangements etc.
The place has been thoroughly neglected. Please choose your season well before planning a visit. The entire joy of boat ride will be washed out in a hot and humid season.
Pichavaram consists of a number of islands interspersing a vast expanse of water covered with mangrove forest. Pichavaram Mangrove Forest is the second largest mangrove forest in the world covering about 1100 hectare of area. It is separated from the bay of Bengal by a sand bar. The biotope consists of species like Avicennia and Rhizophora. It also supports the existence of rare varieties of economically important shell and fishes.

Pondicherry (or Puducherry), a French colonial settlement in India until 1954, is now a Union Territory town bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu state. Its French legacy is preserved in its French Quarter, with tree-lined streets, mustard-colored colonial villas and chic boutiques. A seaside promenade runs along the Bay of Bengal and passes several statues, including a 4m-high Gandhi Memorial.
Auroville is a small town 6 km north of Pondicherry. This town was a vision of The Mother from Sri Aurobindo Ashram at Pondicherry as it's an international town. It was founded in 1968 by the spiritual leader Mirra Alfassa as a town where people from all over the world could live in harmony. Its focal point is the Matrimandir, a futuristic, spherical temple covered in gold discs. Auroville Botanical Gardens protects the region’s tropical dry evergreen forest. Auroville Beach is a long sandy stretch with gentle surf.

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which buffeted the east coast of India and caused extensive damage to Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, left the neighbouring area of Pichavaram, covered in a dense mangrove forest, relatively unharmed. ... However, Pichavaram was not heavily affected.
The only Area which reduced the Impact of Tsunami in 2004 with the help of world 2nd Largest Mangrove Forest Pichavaram

Chidambaram is famous for Nataraj Temple. It is a holy city in Tamilnadu about 78 Kilometers from Pondichery, 160 Km from Trichy and 50 Kms from Cuddalore. Though the temple of Chidambaram is the main attraction there are many other temples in the city. There are wide roads and shopping areas at four sides of the temple. This video shows all four sides and entrances (gopuram) of Natraj temple, views of Thillai Kaali Amma Temple, food in restaurants and various other places in the city of Chidambaram during our visit to the place.
Both Nataraj and Chidambaram are names of Lord Shiva. Here the name of the Place is also Chidambaram (about 78 Kilometers from Pondichery, 160 Km from Trichy, 50 Kms from Cuddalore) in Tamilnadu. The place Chidambaram is famous for Nataraj Temple. Lord Shiva is worshiped here in a dancing position. Apart from Lord Nataraj (Shiva) there are temples of Govindaraj (Vishnu), Ganesh and Kartikeya (Murugan) etc. in the same premise.
Pichavaram boating complex is run by TTDC. You can book powerboats for Rs 1000/- for 40 minutes (capacity-10 people) and rowing boat for Rs 150/- per hour. There is no pedal boats or self-driven boats. We took a rowing boat and enjoyed the beautiful sceneries of the mangrove forest. Watch the video to feel the thrilling experience of backwater boating.
