Pichi Richi Railway - Quorn
A Flinders Ranges tradition since 1974
Experience train travel as it was a century ago in the South Australian countryside on the Pichi Richi Explorer, a half-day steam-train journey from Quorn.
As the track winds its way into the picturesque Pichi Richi Pass, you'll get a close-up view of the ancient Flinders Ranges geology in the deep rock cuttings built in the 1870s.
The carriages, some dating back to the 19th century, were used on narrow-gauge trains such as the Great Northern Express, the Ghan, the East-West Express and services in the south-east of SA.

Pichi Richi Railway: Pichi Richi Explorer
The 3'6 gauge Pichi Richi Railway is located in the mid north of South Australia and winds its way from Pt Augusta to Quorn over the Flinders Ranges through the picturesque Pichi Richi Pass.
In the first half of the 20th century, this line formed both the transcontinental route from Sydney to Perth, and was part of the Central Australia line (made famous by The Old Ghan) until the 1957 when the standard gauge line to Maree was built.
In the early 70's the Pichi Richi Railway was formed to preserve and operate this line. It is now the only operational section left of the once extensive network of narrow gauge lines north and east of Pt Augusta and remains open due to the dedicated group of volunteers who do an outstanding job running the railway.
This video features the Pichi Richi Explorer train which runs from Quorn to Woolshed Flat and return. The train was hauled by Silverton Tramway 22, which is actually rebuilt from former WAGR W916 using parts from the original 22. The carriages are former South Australian Railways narrow gauge cars.
An extra train was also run later in the day for the Teddy Bears Picnic and I followed this to Woolshed Flat.

Pichi Richi Railway: NB30 Transfer to Quorn
14th March 2017
Earlier this year, Ex-Commonwealth Railways diesel shunter NB30 was taken to Port Augusta depot with two Ex-South Australian Railways FBN Sleeper Wagons to assist with Track Work in the Port Augusta Area. One month later, with the track work basically completed, NB30 was hurriedly transferred back to Quorn ahead of the following days Afghan Express. Due to the track gang not clearing the line until late in the day, NB30's arrival back in Quorn was delayed until approximately 7:30pm. This meant that the last half of her run was done in darkness, creating very atmospheric conditions.

Pichi Richi Railway's Trans Australian Railway Centenary Special Departing Quorn 22/10/17
Hi all,
Here we see Silverton Tramway Company W Class No. 22 'Justin Hancock' working Pichi Richi Railway's Trans Australian Railway Centenary Special to Port Augusta for the hundredth anniversary celebrations on Sunday 22nd of October 2017.
This day was a very special day on the railway calendar for the Pichi Richi Railway as the day celebrated the centenary of the opening of the first link in the long ambitious move to link the east & west coasts of Australia by rail. A move that took until 1970 to complete.
The building of the TAR line was a plan to lure Western Australia into the Federation which brought all states and territories under the flag of a Federal Government, thus becoming one nation & a country in 1901.
Over a hundred years later the TAR is still an important rail link to move vast amounts of freight to and from the west and east coasts of Australia. Videos of these vast freight trains out North can be viewed in the various playlists that the channel has.
In the early years of the link, the nation was divided on which gauge to use and you needed to catch numerous trains to get where you were going because of the difference in gauge.
The preserved section that remains today, the iconic Pichi Richi Railway, served as a link for the East-West Transcontinental railway across the Nullarbor Plain which was completed in 1917 and continued to serve for the next twenty years after that.
However, the Pichi Richi Railway line began languishing in the 1950s when a change in route and gauge took Central & Western traffic away from it.
The line officially closed in 1972, but within a few years, the Pichi Richi Railway gangers had a section restored between Quorn & Summit and then progressively made their way towards Port Augusta by 2001.
Thanks for reading.
I hope you enjoy the brief video :)

Pichi Richi ANZAC day 2019
Lest we forget those who have fallen. ANZAC day up at quorn and the only afternoon train we have on the Pichi richi timetable and we chased it. With one new spot and a few recycled ones here is the video all edited and with fun times by me. So like the Easter Video the ANZAC day video is using a combo of gopro and video camera. But it is with W934 and with great help by all the volunteers it was great to make.

Pichi Richi Double Header - 5 Oct 2019
On a very hot day we arrive at Port Augusta to catch the Afghan Express as she readies her carriages for the run to Wool Shed Flat to meet up with the Pichi Richi Explorer, to combine for the run into Quorn. Due to the heat and the high fire danger Diesels engines were used for this Double Header train, Loco NT76, from Port Augusta, meeting NSU52, at Wool Shed Flat, making a rather unique double header this year, to say the least.
PIchi Richi Railway Railfan 2019 Day 3 5 Yx back to quorn
Last part of what was meant to be 3 parts turned into 5 last part well just as good as the others.

T199 & T186 Peterborough To Pichi Richi Pass Summit 1970
T199 & T186 Peterborough To Pichi Richi Summit South Australia May 1970. An excursion using two narrow gauge T class steam locomotives. The line between Quorn and Port Augusta through Pichi Richi Pass was long closed when this film was made and the
narrow gauge lines radiating from Peterborough to Terowie, Port Pirie, Broken Hill, Quorn to Port Augusta, and Central Australia had been progressively replaced by standard gauge via other routes.
From Adelaide, the change to narrow from broad gauge was originally at Terowie. All the narrow gauge lines are now closed apart from the Quorn to Port Augusta section through Pichi Richi Pass which was progressively restored by, and is operated by the Pichi Richi Preservation Society.
