Trains on the Vermont Rail System (Early Spring 2017)
After a long winter that felt like it was never going to end, spring has finally awoken in Vermont, at least sort of. Leaves have finally budded along the Vermont Rail System but cold temperatures and cloudy skies continue to plague New England and environs. Red VRS locomotives have budded as well and the blue and white lease locomotives have started to scatter off around the rail system. As a matter of fact, all but two freight clips in this whole video feature widecab leaders, as well as trains that have all widecab consists! Later in this video, I also managed to get a new camera (Canon HG20) which is nothing fancy, but definitely something different for a change. I managed to give my old camera to Railfanning 101 Vermont. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
INFO:
(0:00) Intro
(0:40) Leicester Junction, VT
BDRD (GMTX GP38-2 2684, VTR GP40-2W 310, GMTX GP38-2 2663)
Three engines come roaring in full throttle past a nice farm setting. This was definitely a spot worth trying, and I'm definitely going to come film trains here more often!
(2:00) Rutland, VT
GMRC 264 (GMTX SD60 9000, VTR GP40-2W 311, VTR GP40-2W 310, VTR SD70M-2 432)
The last time that we will ever see GMTX 9000. She has unfortunately gotten bought by the now G&W run Providence and Worcester Railroad, (9000 was jointly leased between VRS and P&W) and will eventually become a pumpkin, along with the other P&W units.
(4:40) Middlebury, VT
BDRD (VTR GP40-2W 310, GMTX GP38-2 2205)
First time catching a train here as well, and would definitely do it again! BDRD rolls slowly through Middlebury, and what will be a future Amtrak station when the Ethan Allen Express extends to Burlington in the next couple of years.
(8:55) Salisbury, VT
Same train as previous: Passing by an overflowing Otter Creek (background) in Salisbury at an old farm.
(11:00) Leicester, VT
Same train as previous: Notching it through Leicester Junction. This is where the VTR 310 truly lets out it's Canadian side.
(12:20) Center Rutland, VT
Same train as previous: Echoing along the valley across VT Route 3
(14:00) West Rutland, VT
Amtrak 292 (AMTK P32AC-DM 714)
Echoing through the north end of the Taconic Mountains.
(16:05) Rutland, VT
GMRC 264 (VTR SD70M-2 431, VTR GP40-2W 310, VTR GP40-2W 311, VTR SD70M-2 432)
All four VRS widecabs in one train! VTR 431 has gotten wyed as of this video and is now facing north/west instead of south/east.
(19:45) Rutland, VT
BDRD (VTR GP40-2W 310, VTR GP40-2W 311, GMTX GP38-2 2147)
New camera test: BDRD rolls into Rutland with twin ex:Canadian National widecabs and the Natchez Railway engine (isolated).
(22:20) West Rutland, VT
Amtrak 290 (AMTK P32AC-DM 701)
Empire Service leader!
(23:30) West Rutland
CLP 264 (VTR GP40-2W 311, VTR GP40-2W 310)
Both twins pull this night train through the double crossing
(24:40) Hydeville, VT
Same train as previous: moving it's way through a crossing that has unfortunately suffered the e-bell syndrome.
(26:00) Fair Haven, VT
Same train as previous: Turning the throttle back up past the cameras.
(28:00) Whitehall, NY
Same train as previous: Reaching it's destination and will now interchange with Canadian Pacific.
Thanks For Watching!

Week 4 saw me continue northbound while Anthony required some extra rest time in Manchester Center, VT for his shin splint issues. The wealth of swimmable lakes continued with overnight stops at Griffith Lake and two nights at Little Rock Pond. After staying at Clarendon Shelter on night 4 and enjoying an expansive cloud scape on Killington Peak, this Vermont stretch wrapped up with a night at Pico Camp cabin. This stretch between Manchester Center and US 4 (Rutland) overlaps with the Long Trail.
Here are some gear choices I've used with success and can recommend:

According to the Green Mountain Club, Vermont and the Long Trail hold a prominent place in the history of the Appalachian Trail. It may have been on or near the summit of Stratton Mountain, after construction of the Long Trail was begun, that the idea of an extended footpath linking the scenic ridges of the East crystallized in the mind of Appalachian Trail visionary Benton MacKaye.
First proposed in 1921 by MacKaye, a forester, author, and philosopher, the Appalachian Trail was completed in 1937. It extends more than 2,000 miles from Katahdin in Maine to northern Georgia’s Springer Mountain. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy, founded in 1925, works with its member clubs and federal and state agencies to preserve and maintain the Appalachian Trail, the world’s longest linear national park.
In Vermont, the Appalachian Trail coincides with the Long Trail from the Massachusetts border to Maine Junction at Willard Gap just north of U.S. 4, and then swings east to cross the Connecticut River near Hanover, New Hampshire, a distance of 149.8 miles. The GMC maintains the AT from the Massachusetts border to Vt. 12. to Norwich. For more information about the Appalachian Trail, contact the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

STORYLINE:
Only one flooded Vermont town remained cut off from the outside world Wednesday, but National Guard helicopters were still dropping food and water on storm-ravaged parts of the state as the Eastern seaboard labored to recover from hurricane-turned-tropical-storm Irene.
About 2 million people remained without power in water-logged homes and businesses from North Carolina through New England, where the storm has been blamed for at least 45 deaths in 13 states. Raging floodwaters continued to ravage parts of northern New Jersey on Wednesday morning, even after the state''s rain-swollen rivers crested and slowly receded.
It''s like an island now, said Falguni Purohip, who owns the Killington Pico Motor Inn on Route 4 in Mendon, Vt., where her family and one guest are trapped. We can''t go anywhere.
The town of Rutland is 15 miles away but impossible to reach because of extensive road damage. Purohip said the family has power and plenty of food and water to keep them going, but no way of leaving. Nearly 11 inches of rain triggered the deluges, which knocked houses off their foundations, destroyed covered bridges and caused earthquake-style damage to infrastructure all over Vermont.
We are dropping water, food and supplies, trying to help out folks who are hurting, said U.S. Army national Guard Capt. David Fabricius, who was working at an airport in Fair Haven, Vt., where ground crews were loading provisions onto helicopters that recently had flown missions in Iraq.
Towns around New Jersey resembled large, soggy yard sales Wednesday as residents dragged flood-damaged belongings out onto lawns and into streets still muddied with floodwaters left behind by Hurricane Irene. In Wallington, a heart-shaped, one-square-mile town of about 12,000 residents, large sections remained inundated with floodwaters from the Passaic River, which winds around the small hamlet and hits it from several angles.
Sunday morning the water was only up to here, said resident Kevin O''Reilly, gesturing to where his front lawn used to meet the sidewalk. Sunday afternoon, the waves were bouncing off the house, and that''s when it blew out the basement windows. It sounded like Niagara Falls. It just filled up immediately, and this is what we''ve been dealing with since then.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday night that he saw just extraordinary despair after touring flooded areas.
In Connecticut, the Connecticut River at Hartford crested Tuesday evening at 24.8 feet, the highest level since 1987, according to Nicole Belk, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service, in Taunton, Mass. But she said levees helped minimize flooding in riverside communities.
She said the river could still rise slightly farther south, in Middletown, where some streets and neighborhoods were already experiencing minor flooding.
Vermont''s largest electric utility says a convoy of line crews is headed for the town of Rochester _ where a power substation was completely destroyed by flooding _ to begin work to restore power. Officials say at least five Vermont schools are closed until further notice and about 120 have delayed opening for the school year because of roads or schools ravaged by flooding.
But by Wednesday morning, all but one of the communities _ Wardsboro_ had been reached by ground crews, and emergency management officials were hoping to reach it shortly.

You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Face / Sign / Chair
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.
