Picton is a town on the north coast of the South Island, in New Zealand. It’s known as a gateway to the islands and inlets of the Marlborough Sounds. The Edwin Fox Maritime Museum is a 19th-century former convict and cargo ship. EcoWorld Aquarium shelters and rehabilitates native animals such as tuatara reptiles and blue penguins. Nearby, the Queen Charlotte Track traverses coastal forest, skyline ridges and bays.
Picton and its ships - Roadside Stories
With the advent of roll-on, roll-off vehicle ferries across Cook Strait in 1962, Picton became a transport hub. The town is home to the hulk of the globe-trotting ship Edwin Fox, built in 1853 for the East India Company, and now preserved as part of a museum.

The rescued remains of a mid nineteenth century ship are housed close to the Interislander ferry terminal at Picton. What a contrast!
The story of the Edwin Fox is well told in the attached museum, which tells the story of the ship from its construction until it was brought here to be preserved a few years ago.

Unrestored, just saved as a museum and you feel every emotion of the history, the convicts, the immigrants, the crew, including Florence Nightingale, the animals, the almost absence of ablution facilities, history, real history.

February 7-8, 2019 - Picton through Kaikoura
It seems I forgot to upload this one! Picton is a bit of British Columbia in New Zealand! I loved it!
I also always enjoy seeing the seals in Kaikoura and it's good to see the roads are almost finished up that way as well.
Thanks for coming to visit, Jake! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

The Kaikoura coast is always interesting - surf, railway, seals for a start. The Marlborough region comes next with its vineyards and the regional centre of Blenheim.
We stayed in the quiet van park at Spring Creek just out of town rather than the noisy one near the bridge in town. We recommend you do the same.
