Climbing Pidurangala Rock | Sigiriya Sri Lanka
Sigiriya is not included in our tour package so we decided to skip the last day tour in Galle and went back to Central Province to visit Pidurangala rock and Lion Rock.
We don't have enough time to enjoy the beach at The Palm Hotel in Beruwala. Our tour guide Chris help us arrange a private transportation from Palm Hotel Beruwala to Sigiriya. Travel duration was 4-5hrs.
It's worth climbing Pidurangala rock because of the challenge and adventure I felt. Seeing the greenery view of Sigiriya from the top.

Hiking Pidurangala Rock // Sri Lanka Travel Guide
While Sigiriya is the most famous rock in Sri Lanka, the best views can be found by climbing and hiking Pidurangula Rock directly across from it. Here's how I got on hiking it in flip flops - not a good decision I can tell you!! Video includes what to wear, visiting the temple and sleeping Buddha statue and a bit about the history.

Pidurangala is a massive rock formation located a few kilometers north of Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It has an interesting history closely related to that of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Climbing to the top of Pidurangala Rock is more strenuous than climbing Sigiriya. If you are fit and adventurous it is a climb worth making. It will take you about two hours. There is far less to see on this site than Sigiriya

Travel Sri lanka - Pidurangala, Sigiriya
Sigiriya Rock is the number one tourist attraction in Sri Lanka and the main reason most tourists travel to Sigiriya. In fact many other travelers I spoke to also agreed that Sigiriya Rock was great but it was Pidurangala Rock that was the more memorable experience.
While Sigiriya Rock is rich in history and has some pretty dramatic features such as the lion’s paw and the mirror wall, Pidurangala Rock has a much more natural feel, despite also housing a temple.
Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya Rock and is the best viewing spot of Sigiriya Rock as it is only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a popular spot for sunrise as you can enjoy 360-degree views of not only the valleys but also Sigiriya Rock.
There is no need to choose between the two. Many travelers wake up for the sunrise at Pidurangala and then head to sunset on top of Sigiriya Rock. This is exactly what I did and I highly recommend it.

SUNRISE AT SIGIRIYA ROCK FROM PIDURANGALA ROCK FOR $3! | Sri Lanka Vlog 1
I arrived in Sri Lanka and headed from Negombo to Sigiriya by bus straight away! Sigiriya Rock is Sri Lanka's most popular icons but it costs $30.00 to climb it and it has big queues. Instead I climbed up Pidurangala Rock for sunrise which costs just 500Rs / $3.00 to see Sigiriya Rock from a distance and see the sunrise, it was beautiful and the best way to see Sigiriya Rock. Plus there were lots of other backpackers up there too!
Later that day I got the bus from Sigiriya to Dambulla to visit Dambulla Cave Temple. This is one of the only things to do in Dambulla really. If you go, remember you need to buy a ticket towards the bottom, don't climb all the way to the top without a ticket for Dambulla Cave Temple. It costs 1500Rs to enter.
I stayed at a hotel called Kings Village Sigiriya and I really liked it, I had my own self contained room with an incredible view and the food there was amazing so I really recommend it!

SIGIRIYA ON A BUDGET · AMAZING PIDURANGALA ROCK | TRAVEL VLOG #63
Sigiriya in Sri Lanka is sort of a must-see when you visit Sri Lanka, but those tickets are definitely not cheap!
One ticket to Sigiriya is 4900 rupees (30 USD) and for that you can get two nights in a double room in a guesthouse or about 30 local meals. So you can see why many travellers are a bit hesitant when it comes to visiting the beautiful ancient rock.
But, as always, we found the budget-friendly way to visit Sigiriya, and it was absolutely amazing! Pidurangala rock is a few kilometres away from Sigiriya, but it's only one tenth of the price, and we got those gorgeous view of Sigiriya that we've seen in countless Sri Lanka guides.
At tuktuk from Dambulla to Sigiriya is about 800-1000 rupees, but you can also take the bus from Dambulla to Sigiriya and walk from the entrance to Pidurangala Rock, which is what we did, and the walk took us about 40 minutes. The bus from Dambulla to Sigirya took around 20 minutes and was very budget-friendly!
When we were ready to go back to Dambulla, we realised that there were no more busses running after six in the evening, so we had to surrender and pay the 900 rupees for a tuktuk to take us back to the city. Many travellers also choose to stay in Sigiriya instead of Dambulla. From what we could see, that would definitely be an option for a night or two. If you choose to stay in Dambulla, we highly recommend the guesthouse called Evergreen Hotel Dambulla. The owner is really really nice, and the rooms were very nice as well. And it's definitely a good and budget-friendly option.

The hike will only take about 20 minutes to the top and only the last 50-100m will be the challenge other than that you will find stares to climb. View from the top is the Sigiriya Rock which will be the most iconic view of Sri Lanka.

Episode 93: The main reason people travel to Sigirya is to hike up Lion Rock. However, we decided to hike Pidurangala Rock instead, due to it's prices, the traffic, and the views! Lion costs 5,500 Rupees, whereares Pidurangala only costs 500 Rupees. PLUS, then you get the views of Lion Rock too! We think we made the right decision! Might just be one of our favourite hikes so far!

Pidurangala Rock in Sri Lanka
The less touristy partner to Sigiriya, Pidurangala offers amazing views without the bus loads of tour groups. Though the climb as you get to the top is quite strenuous it is worth having the views almost to yourself. We only saw around 10 other people while we were there and most of them were much younger than us. The average age was around 20 to 30.

Sigiriya is one of the most valuable historical monuments of Sri Lanka.
Called by many names including “The Lion Rock” for its initial name of “Sinhagiri”, Sigiriya is near the town of Dambulla and is a colossal column of rock nearly 200m high. It was a royal citadel for 18 years (477-495) when it was fortified by King Kasyapa.
