The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery spreads over 6 miles of shoreline around Point Piedras Blancas on the central coast of California. The viewing areas are located 90 miles south of Monterey, 5 miles north of Hearst Castle State Historical Monument in San Simeon, 1.5 miles south of Point Piedras Blancas. The viewing areas are open every day of the year, are wheelchair accessible, and free. No reservations required.
The northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal. It spends eight to ten months a year in the open ocean, diving 1000 to 5800 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours, and migrating thousands of miles, twice a year, to its land-based rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and rest. Piedras Blancas is a great place to view these remarkable creatures during their time onshore.

...The mother and pup bond very shortly after the birth, developing a familiarity with both sound and smell which will help them stay close during the four-week nursing period. The birth is often attended by many gulls that come for the afterbirth or placenta -- a visit not to the mother's liking.
The mother is very protective of the pup, aggressively guarding the pup and the area around the two of them from intruders of any size. Nursing begins anywhere from a few hours to a day after birth. It is important to realize that the mother (as are all seals except nursing pups) is fasting during her stay in the rookery -- no food and no water for the duration. That makes the pups growth over the four weeks of nursing -- quadrupling its weight -- even more remarkable. The mother loses 30% -- 40% of the weight she had when she arrived.
During the final week of nursing, the mother goes into estrous and is bred, most likely by the alpha male but quite possibly by one of the betas. Shortly thereafter she weans her pup and heads for the ocean, often running a gauntlet of beta males. Family life is over. The pup, now called a weaner, is on its own and will seek the company of other weaners away from the areas of the beach used by the remaining mothers who would not welcome its presence.
The pups remain in the rookery for two to two and one-half months after weaning, spending time in the shallow tide pools off-shore to build muscle and skill before they embark on their first ocean voyage, returning during the fall haul-out in October and November...

Elephant Seals Piedras Blancas Beach, San Simeon, California Hwy 1
Elephant Seals early February 2013
Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal rookery, San Simeon, CA 8/21/15
Friday morning August 21, 2015.
I've never seen this beach 100% devoid of elephant seals before. There were a couple of males in the surf, and 2 dead seals further off in the distance. One was still being picked at by a Turkey Vulture.
August is in the middle of the season where there aren't supposed to be a lot of seals on the beach, but as I said before, I've never seen it like this before in the past.
On the other side of the parking lot there were about 12-20 elephant seals on the beach.

Piedras Blancas is located on California's central coast, just north of San Simeon. The point is named for a white rock out cropping located just off the end of the point. In the 1866, this location was chosen to fill the gap between the lighthouses at Point Conception and Point Sur.
The Piedras Blancas Lighthouse was completed in 1875. A two story Victorian style dwelling was completed later that year. The original tower was 110 feet tall and housed a first-order Fresnel lens. In 1876 an additional keeper's dwelling and a storage building were added.
Piedras Blancas lighthouse was operated by employees of the US Lighthouse Service until 1939 when the Coast Guard assumed command. Structural damage to the tower and new technology eventually replaced many of the functions of the lightkeepers as they became automated. The Coast Guard subsequently relinquished control and management of the Piedras Blancas Light Station to The Bureau of Land Management on October 12, 2001.

Elephant Seal Breeding Grounds, San Simeon, CA
This is the Point Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery in San Simeon, CA, just north of the Hearst Castle. This film was made in mid-January 2010. It was foggy off and on, and cold. Video was shot with a Canon 7D and 70-200mm f2.8L lens. It was my first film using a DSLR that I had just bought prior to the trip, so I wasn't exactly sure what I was doing. I edited the footage in Premiere Pro CS5, a program I know almost nothing about. Hope you enjoy the film; the seals are a lot of fun to watch, especially the crying pups.
