First Minister opens new Stromness pier
A new pier at Copland's Dock in Stromness, ensuring that Orkney continues to play a central role in the growing marine renewables sector, has been officially opened by First Minister Alex Salmond.
Following an increase in marine traffic at Stromness, Orkney Islands Council took the decision to increase the harbour's capacity.
With £2.5 million Scottish Government funding, supporting £6.25 million from Orkney Islands Council and £1.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund, a new 100 metre pier at Copland's Dock and access road was developed to give greater marine energy access to the harbour and a local industrial estate.

Annie McKelvie Song Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland December video of a Scotsman singing Annie McKelvie at an event for Senior Citizens on visit to Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.
Dumbarton's the place I met Annie McKelvie
She was walking alone by the shore
And we talked for a while till as evening was falling
I walked her back home to her door
She said, Give me a while to think o'er your proposal
My mother would have to consent
So we parted that night with a kiss at her doorstep
Back home through Bowling I went
At last she agreed she would come to the dancing
And travel to Clydebank by train
On that cold station platform I waited for hours
I never saw Annie again
Oftimes I walk by the banks of the Leven
And follow its flow to the Clyde
And I think of that day spent wi' Annie McKelvie
The lassie that wounded my pride
Last chorus:
Do you fancy a night at the dancing wi' me
The band in the town hall's the finest you'll see
If there's no' another place you'd rather be
Then I'll wait at the dance for you, Annie
Big News - HMS Birmingham
30th May 2016. The Centenary of The Battle of Jutland is being commemorated on Tuesday with a national service of commemoration at St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall and will be remembered around the country at various memorials.
It was on the 31st of May 1916 that the Royal Navy took on the German High Fleet in what became a 36-hour battle off the coast of Denmark.
The Battle of Jutland, as it became known, involved 250 ships, 151 of them British and it cost the lives of more than 6,000 British seamen.
One of the ships involved was HMS Birmingham, luckily she didn't suffer any casualties and survived the war, but she became famous for an event which took place in the opening phase of the war in August 1914.
