Nepal, Kathmandu: Boudhanath
Nepal, Kathmandu: Boudhanath
Kathmandu is a sacred valley, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Boudhanath is in Kathmandu, and I visited for 10 weeks in 2013. Here in this stunning sanctuary of Tibetan Buddhism.
Since the earthquake last week more people than ever before are here at Boudhanath stupa praying and doing mantras.

One thing you can do to help the people of #Nepal is to donate to
Wolf Price has been in Nepal for 10 years empowering girls with education and technology. He founded beyondthefourwalls.org a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, so your donations are fully tax deductible,
Wolf has the connections to get things done in Kathmandu as he has been there creating relationships for a decade and being a vital force in the #Kathmandu community.
His team is there now helping people in the aftermath of the quake.
Every dollar you give gets to the people who need it the most for food, clothing, shelter, and medicine.
The families he helps were all under-advantaged and now with the quake, it is even worse as many are living on the street under plastic without food and water.
Any donation you give is appreciated. No amount is too small.
Help Nepal get back on its feet.

Secrets of Stunning Photos
Kathmandu durbar square, Nepal
Kathmandu durbar square is spread over large area and consist of many temples including Kasthamandap, Vishnu Temple, Indrapur Temple and Taleju temples. Kathmandu durbar square is much bigger than Bhaktapur or patan durbar square. Kumari Chowk at the end of durbar square was most curious attraction for us. We wanted to see the kumaris who are chosen as human incarnation of the Hindu goddess, Durga. Our guide suggested us to come back after finishing the tour at 4 PM to see her and glad we did.
The unique thing about temples in Nepal is their wooden carving, which are undoubtedly one of the best in the world. One of the striking feature is struts design, which supports the temples. Each strut is fine example of art with god, goddess and mythical figures carved in the middle. Only few temple inside Kathmandu durbar square are active and devotee can be seen all the time.

The Central Zoo is a 6-hectare (15-acre) zoo in Jawalakhel, Nepal. It is home to some 870 animals in 109 species, and is operated by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). Although it was originally a private zoo, it was opened to the public in 1956.
During the Bhoto Jatra festival, celebrated near the zoo, the zoo may see upwards of 34,000 visitors in a single day after they come to see a historical jeweled vest at the culmination of the Rato Machchhindranath jatra.
The Central Zoo was established in 1932 by Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shumser as a private zoo, and came under government control in 1950. It was opened to the public in 1956, and in December 1995, the government handed over responsibility of the zoo to the National Trust for Nature Conservation. Although work is not complete, the NTNC has been upgrading the facilities so that animals can live in larger enclosures that simulate their natural environment. It is also working towards turning the zoo into a research and educational facility, as well as remaining a tourist attraction.
The central pond at the zoo was built during the rule of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla, and at one time was the source of water for Patan.

Boudhanath is one of the highest regarded Buddhist pilgrimages in Nepal. Located centrally in bustling Boudha area, in the eastern Kathmandu, is flocked by pilgrims and visitors.
There are several legends behind the erection stupa but however, it is highly regarded because it is believed to be built immediately after the demise of Buddha, in around 484 BC.

Furthermore, the steeple or the Gajur of Stupa has nine levels that represents the mythical Mt. Meru, which is believed to be center of the cosmos. The base of the Stupa has 3 levels, decreasing in size. These platforms are believed to depict the earth. The mandala of the stupa is as well very large which makes this pilgrimage one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and in the world
Located in the heart of huge Buddhist community around, you can see monks and followers of Buddhism in abundance spinning prayer wheels and doing rituals all day long.
Boudha was announced unesco world heritage site in 1979. Since then, this area has been frequently visited by pilgrims and tourist. Hence, it is surrounded by good eateries, hotels, curio shops and guest houses. Boudhanath is a must watch sight in the Kathmandu valley.

Janabahal
The old temple of Janabahal, Seto Machindranath, is a very well-known and distinguished praying destination for the Hindu/Buddhist pilgrims all around Nepal. And like most of the shrines of Nepal, undeniably a renowned destination for bird lovers (and also non bird lovers) to feed the birds, particularly, pigeons. Before legitimately starting this piece of writing, there’s a question for all the readers. What is the first thing you observe or what is the first thing that welcomes you when you enter a Hindu/ Buddhist religious area? Think. Well, there can’t be a reason for your answer not being lots (and when I say lots, I mean a hell a lot) of pigeons.
But technically, the situation has changed in the magnificent Seto Machindranath Temple drastically. Aka, if you pay a visit to the temple after 12 p.m., you will without doubt not be welcomed by any (“any” being the key word) pigeon. The recent change, I’m sorry did I mention recent, the 2 years old modification has affected the birds there significantly. Hunger is a heartbreaking reality and because of this brutal ban, the pigeons are being a major victim of hunger, of course after 12 p.m.
The glorious Seto Machindranath Temple which was built during the Golden Licchavi Period has been a shelter and a food seeking place for pigeons since its birth. About hundreds of pigeons depend on the grains provided by the worshippers there for survival. But harsh fact, there has been an inhumane ban to feed the pigeons after 12 p.m. since 2 long years which has been reduced 11 a.m. recently (and I mean recently now). Banning the practice of feeding pigeons which started more than a couple of decades ago had to have a concrete explanation. Well, the officials stated that the temple has turned out to be very filthy and polluted because of the pigeons there. They believed that the pigeons there have been a reason for unhygienic surroundings and an unclean environment. Moreover, they added that the residents around the temple were also not pleased about the pigeons seeking a haven on the windows of their homes. They were confident that it not only disturbed them but also added a workload to clean the waste materials of pigeons. Ohoo, ain’t nobody got time for that!
When asked the key reason for actually building this bold resolution, the officials said that they were done with the complaints of the people stating how the temple was clothed in dirt and trash. So, they initiated a petition on whether to let people feed the pigeon as it is or mark the time period, where the official said about 400+ votes supported the latter. And well, well, that’s where the nightmare of the residential pigeons of Janabahal began.
But it’s not about where it began; it’s about where it is going from here. Can it be that the temple is much cleaner now after the ban of feeding ritual? And well, well, it’s not only about the Seto Macchindranath Temple, it’s about all the temples of Nepal. I mean, hopefully it’s not only the birds of that particular area who shit so technically speaking, shouldn’t there be a ban in all the temples of Nepal? By putting a time frame of 12 p.m. is it true that the pigeons have stopped living on the windows of the residents? Because if it is not true, we might as well build toilets for pigeons and train them to loo accordingly. Building temples and worshipping God and praying for good health and prosperity is an act of “dharma” but making the voiceless starve to death..wollah it has to be “dharma” too or else we can’t expect these so called religious mouths to make such an inhumane approach. And don’t get it wrong, these people are exactly the ones sharing “animal rights” issues on Facebook and talking about world hunger over a cup of tea. We are writing history now. How do we want to be remembered? As super religious people who kill innocent birds at the cost of dirt? How about we think about better approaches, like actually using the investment and donations for cleaning purposes instead of, you know what I mean. When there is a will, there has to be a way, and this is one the Nepali Issue that we all must speak up for and find long term solutions for. Because, the day might not be that far where pigeons extinct in our country. Just like peace has.

Kathmandu City Guide | Nepal Travel Series Transcript:
Well good morning. It is our first full day in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं). We are up bright and early. Sometimes it’s nice to be surprised by a destination, so we arrived in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) without a whole lot of prior research. We knew we wanted to see the temples and palaces around Durbar Square (Basantapur Darbar Kshetra), but that was about it. We were up early, but Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) was buzzing. Scooters were racing to work, vendors were setting up their fresh produce, and construction work was underway.
Alright, so next up we are in Indrachok (इन्द्रचोक) It is a market area and yeah very lively. We're at the Garden of Dreams. Garden of Dreams (स्वप्न बगैंचा) and there is a beautiful little cafe & restaurant here. So we're just relaxing. These gardens are partly funded by the Austrian government. It is momo (饃饃) time. So we ordered vegetable momo today.
It is day 2 in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) and today's excursion is to the Monkey Temple. The name is Swayambhunath (स्वयम्भू स्तूप).
We just finished visiting the Monkey Temple. We're riding a taxi to visit Pashupatinath Temple (पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिर) which is one of the more popular ones here in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं).
This next temple is a sacred Hindu site (पशुपतिनाथ मन्दिर) where many believers choose to be cremated. According to the Nepalese Hindu tradition, the body must be dipped three times into the Bagmati River in order to break the reincarnation cycle.
So today is our last day in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं) and we've been staying in the neighborhood of Thamel. It is kind of like the touristy area. They have a lot of shops where you can pick-up souvenirs and like little trinkets to take back home. So we're going to do a bit of shopping.
Today we are having Dal Bhat (दालभात). We've been eating Dal Bhat (ডাল ভাত) very very often. So much so Sam has declared it his favorite dish.
Lastly in Kathmandu (काठमाडौं), we went in search of a rooftop terrace to enjoy a drink & watch the sunset with colourful prayer flags blowing in the wind.
This is part of our Travel in Nepal video series showcasing Nepali food, Nepali culture and Nepali cuisine.
