Pildappa Rock is a unique pink inselberg located 15 kilometres northeast of Minnipa. Situated in South Australia's granite country, locals proudly proclaim Pildappa to rival the more famous Wave Rock - a sandstone wave form located in Hyden Western Australia.
Formed about 1500 million years ago Pildappa Rock is part of the vast Gawler Craton - a geological shield structure covering central Eyre Peninsula, the Gawler Ranges and large parts of outback South Australia. Geologists refer to Pildappa Rock and other inselbergs in the area as belonging to the Hiltaba suite of rocks - basically orthoclase rich pink granites dating from Eyre Peninsula's Precambrian age.
Nearby the Gawler Ranges were formed as a result of volcanic action. Unlike the Gawler Ranges however, Eyre Peninsula's inselbergs were formed as Batholiths or granite domes some 7 kilometres below the earth's surface. Clearly much soil erosion has occurred during the past 1500 million years. Equally remarkably, Pildappa Rock and many other Australian inselbergs exhibit very slow rates of weathering - with numerous studies indicating exposed granite surfaces eroding at rates below 50 centimetres per million years.

The day's much-anticipated highlight looked set to be a walk through Gawler Ranges National Park, South Australia, to the widely talked about Organ Pipes. While we enjoyed our stroll, it was a rock of a very different kind that captivated our imagination just outside the national park.
We had Pildappa Rock earmarked as a good place to camp, but it is so much more than that.
A giant pink granite inselberg that glows tangerine and gold at sunset, Pildappa Rock stretches for 100m, its flaring, weathered walls cresting like waves frozen in time.
Gentle rock spurs rise three to four storeys high to a lichen-covered summit pockmarked with dozens of gnamma (water) holes, many holding rainwater and sustaining flowering grasses. At its base, there are excellent picnic and camping facilities - shelters, with tables, gas barbecues, lights, rainwater tanks, rubbish bins and toilets. And the camping is free.

GAWLER RANGES Tcharkulda Hill Camp, Pildappa Rock, Organ Pipes. APRIL 2015
GEIST caravan trip into the Gawler Ranges & NP region, SA, on the 15th April 2015. .
We free camped at Tcharkulda Hill, then dropped the Geist van in the main street of Minnipa township and headed out with a FREE Navara to sight-see for the day, visiting Pildappa Rock & then driving cross-country to the 4WD track leading into THE ORGAN PIPES.
The footage is mostly still's with some movie taken of the Organ Pipes.

Eyre Peninsula Rocks South Australia
Eyre Peninsula is a wonderland of rocks. Pildappa or Wave Rock near Minnipa rivals wave rocks in other states. Mt Wudinna is Australia's 2nd largest granite monolith (after Uluru) and worth the drive. Ucontitchie Hill is an inselberg of international geological significance. Murphy's Haystacks are the most accessible of the rocks. Tcharkulda has a free camping site in a nice bushland setting. Talia Rocks, near Elliston, has both the Woolshed Cave and The Tub.
