Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
Mount Maunganui is a major residential, commercial and industrial suburb of Tauranga, located on a peninsula to the north-east of Tauranga's city centre. It is a holiday paradise - you can surf, swim, play golf, shop, dine or simply relax and soak up the atmosphere. There’s no pressure here, just take your time to enjoy the pace of life you want.
Mount Maunganui is located atop a sand bar that connects Mauao to the mainland, a geographical formation known as a tombolo. Because of this formation, the residents of Mount Maunganui have both a harbour beach (Pilot Bay) and an ocean beach with great surf, within a short distance. At the base of Mauao, the distance between the harbour and ocean side is a couple of blocks.
The ocean beach has Mauao or Mount Maunganui at its western end, and a man made land bridge connecting Moturiki Island at its eastern end.
Mauao (The Mount) is a large lava dome which rises above the town. According to Maori legend, this hill was a pononga [slave] to a mountain called Otanewainuku. The conical headland which gives the town its name is 232 metres (761 ft) in height, and dominates the mostly flat surrounding countryside.

Pilot Bay is one of Hawke's Bay Region's premier destinations – a beautiful sheltered beach which sits on the edge of Tauranga Harbour and beneath Mount Maunganui’s towering mountain ‘Mauao’.
This bay runs along the southwestern side of Mount Maunganui’s peninsula and is sheltered from the open ocean. Small waves gently lap at the shore here as the tide flows in and out, providing calm swimming conditions all year round.
This is a great spot for families with young children who want to splash about in the water without getting knocked off their feet by big waves. Hunt for shells, build sandcastles, draw pictures in the sand and enjoy swimming with your little ones here.
Pilot Bay’s sandy beach gradually rises upwards to become a wide, flat grass reserve which extends back towards the main road, The Mall. A wooden boardwalk runs parallel to this road so you can stroll the full length of Pilot Bay to reach the base of Mauao and the start of the mountain’s popular 3.4km base track.
A row of stately Norfolk Pine trees line Pilot Bay, helping provide a picture-perfect scene for cruise passengers as they sail through the harbour entrance and berth at the nearby port.
Pilot Bay is the best place to view these magnificent cruise ships up close. Bring a picnic dinner down to this beach and watch them depart on a warm summer’s evening. The largest ships attract huge crowds of locals who cheer and wave goodbye to passengers as they sail away.
There are plenty of barbeques and picnic tables for you to use along Pilot Bay, and cafes and ice-cream parlours are also just a short walk away.
Kayaks and other water sports equipment are available for hire right on the shore here. This is a great place to launch your jet ski, stand up paddle board or watch waka ama crews train for their next regatta. Pilot Bay is also a popular location for triathlons and other open water swimming events during summer months.
A boat ramp and limited parking for boat trailers is available down the Mauao end of Pilot Bay, and public toilets can be found about half way along The Mall.
Pilot Bay is a picturesque place to relax in the sun, enjoy the harbour views and watch the world go by. With stunning scenery, clear blue water and plenty to see and do, it sums up everything we love about the Bay of Plenty.
Pilot Bay Wharf fishing - where it all began
Pilot Bay Wharf fishing - where it all began. I had a few hours to fish in Mt Maunganui so visited the wharf where I spent so much of my youth learning to fish for snapper, kahawai, John dory kingfish and other fish.

FISHING ACTION - BIG SNAPPER, KAHAWAI TREVALLY AT CAPE KARIKARI NZ.
Epic fishing trip up at Cape Karikari - a crazy hot snapper bite as well as schools of trevally and kahawai, Dolphins, whales flying fish and sun fish also encountered. Awesome day up in the Far North, and it was just day one of our trip.
SNAPPER AND KINGFISH AROUND THE WORK UPS - HAURAKI GULF NZ. Headed up to Tiri-tiri Matangi (Auckland, NZ) area to look for work up action and see if I could get into some topwater kingfish and snapper. I successfully fished a stickbait and then switched from jigs to bait for some good eating sized snapper.
DRONE FISHING ACTION - WEST COAST NZ. Headed out to the West Coast to experiment with a new drone called the Splash drone. The drone is waterproof and able to drag a long line and hooks out into the surf. Beautiful day and amazing part of New Zealand.
FISHING ACTION - WAIHEKE ISLAND SNAPPER.
It was a stunning day out fishing for snapper around Waiheke Island (Auckland, New Zealand). We got a full bag of fish on the soft baits and were done by lunch time.
Fishing the wild west coast, west Auckland. I headed out to the area north of Piha after some easterly patterns to find a gentle swell and promising looking ledges. Spectacular country, went looking for snapper, trevally and gurnard. Took the drone for a fly over the coast.
A mission to Mahurangi and around the Hibiscus coast ended with a good bag of snapper – nice drone shots.

How to prepare kingfish sashimi with garlic, ginger and soy
This is a delicious way to eat raw kingfish. While not a traditional way of preparing sashimi it is a very good way for first time raw fish eaters to have a go.
Rocking fishing on one of the rock stacks past Rangitoto Island, some snapper action and an interesting trip home.
Fishing the Hibiscus Coast with Mandy Kupenga from the TV show Get Your Fish On for trevally and snapper, awesome drone footage on a blue sky day.
A trip to Channel Island at the top of the Coromandel with snapper and other species caught. A seal and some cool drone footage gives a whole new perspective on this amazing island.
Heli-fishing at Great Barrier – this is certainly an experience for the bucket list. Amazing views and rich rock fishing action make it hard to beat. We came home with snapper and a kingfish that ate my carpenter stickbait. The drone footage came out really well of the rugged rock terrain too.
Rock fishing around Rangitoto with my new drone. Caught a feed of fish and left some skin and blood on the rocks.
Had a good day out fishing around and on Tiri-Matangi Island softbaiting the wash and landing on the rocks. Encountered a pod of Orca in the Tiri channel and had some good action fishing into the evening on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
An epic day out on the Kaipara Harbour softbaiting for snapper.

Located across the harbour from Tauranga, “the Mount” is almost surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, with New Zealand’s best beach on one side of its peninsula, and the sheltered waters of Pilot Bay on the other.
And overlooking it all towers the mountain itself – Mauao.
Standing 232m above sea level, this iconic landmark is treasured by Maori and locals alike. Mauao means ‘caught be the dawn’ and the mountain is steeped in Maori history and mythology. Several historical pa sites (villages) have been built on this extinct volcanic cone, the evidence of which can still be seen today as you explore the popular walking tracks.
It will take you around 45 minutes to circumnavigate Mauao’s 3.4km-long base track. This is New Zealand’s most popular walk, with expansive ocean views, majestic pohutukawa trees, peaceful beach inlets and numerous places where you can stop and admire the view. The wide, well-maintained pathway is suitable for strollers and you can finish your walk off with an ice-cream on the beach afterwards.
Of course you’ll find the best views right at the top. There are several tracks to Mauao’s summit where you can enjoy breathtaking 360° views along the entire Bay of Plenty coastline, and out across the harbour to Tauranga and the Kaimai Range beyond.
Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach has been crowned the ‘Best Beach in New Zealand’ by TripAdvisor, and ranks among the top 25 best beaches in the world.
