OKINAWA TRIP pt. 2 - Iriomote Island
I left the main island of Okinawa behind for the Yaeyama Islands. I was staying on Ishigaki but decided to take a day trip over to Iriomote Island.
Iriomote Island is basically one big jungle. I took a jungle river cruise and hiked to Maryudo Falls. We also took a water buffalo cart over to Yubu Island (a small island very close to Iriomote). Yubu Island is like one big botanical garden. I very different feel from Iriomote's jungle.

An amazing kayak trip up a river to a jungle pathway which led up to the top of Pinaisara Waterfall, the highest in the Okinawan Island chain. We then walked back down the steep paths and had a swim in the waterfall before kayaking back up the river to where we started. Very hot, very humid, and lots of fun!

Day 4 Jungle Kayaking on Iriomotejima:
Iriomotejima is the second largest island in Okinawa but with a population of about 2,000, it's also one of the least populated. It's about as far away from the bright lights of Tokyo as one can get in Japan and its scenery screams, Welcome to Jurassic Park. Seven species of mangroves indigenous to Japan, and three species that can only be found on Iriomotejima line the banks of all the rivers and provide an excellent backdrop for jungle kayaking. Paddle your way upstream and then hike through the jungle to the tallest waterfall in Okinawa, Pinaisara Otaki Falls, and a piece of tropical paradise most only see on TV and even few westerners have seen with their own eyes.
Bryan is an expat English teacher, published writer and aspiring producer living in Niigata Japan. When he isn't writing articles for Japanese publications in English, he likes to spend his modest earnings to find inexpensive ways to travel and experience Japan.
Traveling on a Dime is a periodic show of Bryan's adventures in one of the most expensive countries in the world. As he says, It doesn't have to be expensive, and you can have an amazing experience even when traveling on a dime.

Iriomote Island 2019
Iriomote island is a landscape and wildlife photographers dream location. We went in search of the Milky Way arching over jungle waterfalls, venomous snakes and more. We were not disappointed.
Being the second largest landmass in the Okinawa prefecture with the least amount of human population means lots of open space. Covered predominantly with mountainous jungles it is also home to numerous waterfalls and rivers, ideal for long exposure photography.
Our trip was focusing more on shooting the Milky Way above a waterfall in the jungle but we happened on so much more. Snakes and other wildlife as well as awesome beaches and lagoons.
I recently visited with a small group of photographers from our base Okinawa.
Sit back and relax as we look into the green heart of this awesome location.
