Silvester Diggles - Early Queensland Naturalist: Liz & George Diggles (October 21st, 2016)
October 21, 2016:
At Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum this week, we had a wonderful presentation by descendant, Liz Diggles, about the fascinating tale of the life and works of Silvester Diggles.
Also available for audience members to see were some of the original illustrations used in Ornithology of Australia as well as Diggles’ original sketch book. Whilst most of the original drawings are now held in museums and libraries both in Australia and overseas, some still in family hands will be brought along on Friday by great grandson, George Diggles.
Silvester Diggles was a young man growing up in Liverpool,
England when he ‘caught the Naturalist bug’. It has been said that the Naturalists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were “the first geeks” in their tenacious pursuit of every new and different item of Nature, discovered and studied in the lands of the ‘new world’. He migrated to Australia in 1854 and soon found his way to the frontier colony of Moreton Bay, later Brisbane. Inspired by the unique nature of Australia’s fauna, Diggles set about collecting, describing and drawing the insects and birds of his new home. Employing the artistic skills learnt in England, he embarked upon the ambitious task of depicting and describing the behaviour and characteristics of the birds of Australia in a work titled The Ornithology of Australia. He drew every specimen from life and hand coloured the resulting prints for his book which is now considered to be very rare.
Diggles was a ‘man of many talents’ who involved himself in other areas of life in the community of early Brisbane. He taught Art in schools, both taught and performed Music and dabbled in photography. In 1871 he participated as Queensland’s representative on the prestigious Solar Eclipse Expedition to Cape York and was a member of a small group who initiated the formation of the Queensland Museum.
Finally, we learned that it's impossible to travel to Toowoomba by boat! (thanks, Liz!)

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Northern Territory (abbreviated as NT) is a federal Australian territory in the central and central northern regions of Australia. It shares borders with Western Australia to the west (129th meridian east), South Australia to the south (26th parallel south), and Queensland to the east (138th meridian east). To the north, the territory is bordered by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria, including Western New Guinea and other Indonesian islands. Despite its large area—covering 1,349,129 square kilometres (520,902 sq mi), making it the third-largest Australian federal division, and the 11th-largest country subdivision in the world—it is sparsely populated. The Northern Territory's population of 246,700 makes it the least populous of Australia's eight states and major territories, having fewer than half as many people as Tasmania. The archaeological history of the Northern Territory begins over 40,000 years ago when Indigenous Australians settled the region. Makassan traders began trading with the indigenous people of the Northern Territory for trepang from at least the 18th century onwards. The coast of the territory was first seen by Europeans in the 17th century. The British were the first Europeans to attempt to settle the coastal regions. After three failed attempts to establish a settlement (1824–1828, 1838–1849, and 1864–66), success was achieved in 1869 with the establishment of a settlement at Port Darwin. Today the economy is based on tourism, especially Kakadu National Park in the Top End and the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (Ayers Rock) in central Australia, and mining.
The capital and largest city is Darwin. The population is concentrated in coastal regions and along the Stuart Highway. The other major settlements are (in order of size) Palmerston, Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek. Residents of the Northern Territory are often known simply as Territorians and fully as Northern Territorians, or more informally as Top Enders and Centralians.

Michigan Author Joy Ibsen reads part of her new book Unafraid at hometown Trout Creek Library
Writer Joy Ibsen honors father with her new book Unafraid - Ibsen's first book Songs of Denmark recently presented to Danish royalty
(Trout Creek, Michigan)- While going through an old oak file cabinet in her mother's Nebraska home, Upper Peninsula Author Joy Ibsen of Trout Creek, Michigan rescued her late dad's sermon notes.
Danish-American pastor Rev. Harald Ibsen is the lead co-author of his daughter's second book Unafraid that was just released in paperback just before Father's Day 2009 by Wipf and Stock Publishers of Eugene, Oregon.
Ibsen died in 1972 at age of 74.
Each of the 36 chapters in the 225-page book Unafraid starts with one of her father's sermons written during the 1940s, 50s and 60s followed by autobiographical and fictional account the thoughts of parishioners listening and what is going on in their lives.
A Lutheran pastor, Harald Ibsen had rural churches in Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.
On Fathers Day I think about how lucky I was to have a dad like mine, said Ibsen, a writer, piano teacher, musician, lay minister.
From protecting a castle as a member of the Danish Royal Guard to being a construction worker at Yellowstone National Park, Rev. Ibsen's career was as unusual as his parenting style.
The mother of three grown children and two grandchildren, Ibsen say her parents have been models for my own parenting.
The Ibsen children were anything but the traditional preacher's kids due to the unconventional child-rearing views her dad held in the conventional 1940s and 1950s.
Endorsements of Unafraid were written by well-known Christian author Dr. Walter Brueggemann, St. Olaf College religion professor L. DeAne Lagerquist and and retired Lutheran Bishop Emeritus Harry Andersen of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Northern Great Lakes Synod.
Harald isben was fresh in his thought, puckish in his style and grounded in faith, Brueggemann said. Harald was unafraid as an immigrant who lived in a venturesome way.
Reviewers say the book is relevant today because the issues then and now are the same including the bad economy, war, marital problems, loss of faith and other social issues.
Unafraid doesn't mean a person is problem-free and it surely doesn't mean to be reckless, said Ibsen, Pine Mountain Music Festival board VP.
The work is named after the Danish hymn Unafraid from Ibsen's first book Songs of Denmark.
Songs of Denmark was presented to Danish Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary by Grand View University President Kent Henning in March 2009.
The hymn Unafraid was sung by the Danish Resistance during World War Two a time of terrible danger, said Ibsen.
Nevertheless one can live with confidence, and hope. Today's society is bombarded by all kinds of fears and we need to learn to live unafraid.

Bonfire Fountain In Front of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
My family and I were going for a tour in the beautiful city of Ottawa in the province of Ontario in the country of Canada. Our first stop is the Parliament Hill, which is like the Capitol Building in the U.S. except it is in Canada. Ottawa is the capital of Canada, so that is why the Parliament Hill is here. I was walking towards the grand entrance and I found this awesome bonfire fountain that I have never seen before and it looked so cool and I thought maybe you guys would be interested in this. If you guys have any questions about the video, go ahead and ask away and also, please let me know if I missed anything in the description box. Enjoy! :D
Glensheen & the Congdon Legacy - Full Documentary
Minnesota’s most-visited house museum, Glensheen, is much more than its beautiful landscaping, rich design, and historic status. It’s a tribute to a family that put down deep roots in northern Minnesota, whose good works live on more than a century after their “home place” was built. This new WDSE documentary reveals the legacy left by the Congdon family and their gracious mansion.
