It covers the densely vegetated slopes of Lung Fu Shan, including the disused Pinewood Battery as well as the Pinewood Garden picnic area, providing a scenic backdrop to the residential and commercial districts of Hong Kong Island. In proximity to residential areas in the Mid-levels and the Western District, Lung Fu Shan area is intensively used by the public, especially by morning walkers and picnickers. It is situated at the north of Pok Fu Lam Country Park. Towards the east of Lung Fu Shan Country Park is Hatton Road, to the south is Harlech Road whereas to the north and west is a covered conduit constructed by the Water Supplies Department. War ruins are major highlights of the park. Pinewood Battery and remains of old forts provide perfect setting for a journey back in time. The Pinewood Picnic Site nearby has a rain shelter and barbecue stoves. Pinewood Battery was built in 1903 as part of the Island West coastal defense line. This military relic is preserved within the protected realm of the country park, with an interpretation plate to introduce its history.
Major Attractions
Pinewood Battery
Pinewood Battery
Sitting on a knoll in Lung Fu Shan Country Park, Pinewood Battery is the remains of an old military fort built in 1903. Pinewood is the highest defense facility of its kind, commanding a high vantage point at 307 metres above sea level. The original gun emplacement, commanding platform and shelters are preserved in tact to this day.
This battery in Lung Fu Shan is a defense position in Northwest Hong Kong Island. Just like Lei Yue Mun, it was designed to protect vessels passing through the western doorway of Victoria Harbour. During the war years, the British forces deployed a large artillery unit and heavy guns in this sea-facing battery to guard the Island.
Pinewood Battery
In the 1920's, not long after its completion, Pinewood Battery was converted into an air defense battery. During the Japanese invasion, it came under repeated air raids. On December 15, 1941, Japanese bombers launched an attack on the battery, causing 1 death and 1 injury. One of the antiaircraft guns and certain other facilities were destroyed. Commander of the defending troops decided to abandon the battery, and all men were ordered to retreat on that day. At that note, Pinewood's historical mission ended gloriously.
Facilities
Lung Fu Shan Country Park provides a wide range of leisure facilities, including picnic sites, barbecue area, notice boards, toilets, fitness equipments, pedestrian walkways, rain shelters and lookout.

HONG KONG'S LATEST
Hong Kong's been making good use of some of the money collected in Britain during World Refugee Year, building new community centres to cope with the refugees, who continue to swell the Colony's population. Children, in particular, find life a good deal brighter here. There's a library to satisfy their search for knowledge, and a good tuck-in for ravenous appetites. Bathing is almost as popular as eating! In the evenings, the youngsters often put on shows to entertain their parents.

ung Chung Fort (Chinese: 東涌古城, 東涌堡 or 東涌炮台; 東涌所城 during the Qing dynasty) is a fort located near Tung Chung, on Lantau Island, in Hong Kong. Close to Tung Chung Road, the fort is surrounded by the villages of Sheung Ling Pei (上嶺皮) and Ha Ling Pei (下嶺皮). It has a companion Tung Chung Battery on the coast.
Tung Chung Fort was built in the Shun Hei era (淳熙, 1174–1189) of the Southern Song dynasty. Smugglers on Lantau Island smuggled salt from the island to Canton City and attacked the government of the city. The government sent a navy led by King Leok Chin (經略錢) to fight against the smugglers. Three hundred soldiers were stationed in Tung Chung and built the Tung Chung Fort. After three years of peace, the soldiers were called back and 150 of them were transferred to build Kowloon Walled City, in which they later stayed.
During the Qing dynasty, many pirates, including the well known Cheung Po Tsai, chose the bay of Tung Chung as their base and made use of the fort. The Qing Government recovered the fort after the surrender of Cheung Po Tsai. In 1832 (or 1817 alternatively) the fort was restricted and garrisoned by the Right Battalion of Tai Peng to defend the coast from pirates until the lease of New Territories to Britain in 1898. The fort was then abandoned.
During World War II, the Japanese army occupied the fort.
Tung Chung Fort went through several transformations later. It served as a police station and then as Wa Ying College. Now, it is the base for the Rural Committee Office and the Tung Chung Public School.
In 1979, it was declared a monument and was refurbished in 1988.
Features[edit]
North gate
There are six still intact old muzzle-loading cannons, each resting on a cement base with enclosures made of granite blocks, which measure 70 by 80 metres (230 by 260 ft). Three arched gateways, each engraved with a Chinese inscription, are spaced along the walls.
Transportation[edit]
The fort can be reached from Mui Wo (Silvermine Bay) bus terminal by taking the no. 3 bus to the Tung Chung terminus and about a half mile walk from the bus stop in the direction of the fort. The fort can also be reached by taking the no. 13 or 14 bus and MTR. Permission is required to drive into the park.
