Pingtung's Confucius Temple and Black Pearls
The Pingtung Confucius Temple, formerly called the Pingtung Tutorial Academy, is over 180 years old. The architecture is famous for its stark elegance. On the wall of the temple a scroll reads, Nine Foot Temple Wall, signifying that Confucius' philosophy is difficult to understand. Just as mastering Confucius' teachings is not easy, neither is appreciating the nuances of the temple.
1211#43 Pingtung Opens Pilot Virtual School
On Dec. 1, Pingtung County's Indigenous Culture and Education Association opened its pilot virtual school, offering tutorials for junior high and elementary school students who may otherwise not have received after-school help.
International CGM Concert in the Taiwan News
On 12 March 2018, the Holy Spirit gathered 20 singers/instrumentalists from 8 English speaking nations to unite with Taiwan’s CGM National Choir and Orchestra to celebrate Leonard Bernstein's 100th Anniversary by performing the Chichester Psalms and many other spiritual works at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, the most famous concert hall in Taiwan.

Emergency drill simulates nuclear plant disaster at Pingtung plant
The Taiwan Atomic Energy Council conducted a two-day-drill at a nuclear plant in the south of the country, as the region remains on high alert over the Japanese nuclear disaster at the Fukushima plant.
During the mock drill, participants were given radiation screening and treatment, while emergency rescue personnel evacuated nearby residents during the training exercise.
Fire officers also sprayed water onto a transformer, near the area storing the plant's two reactors.
Japan's earthquake and tsunami triggered disaster in 2011 has stirred up public concern about the safety of Taiwan's three operating nuclear plants.
President Ma Ying-jeou ignored opposition calls to shut down Taiwan's nuclear power plants, but promised to use the highest standards to maintain nuclear safety.
The third nuclear power plant built in 1978 is run by Taiwan Power Company.
Chen Chin-cheu, the training section chief of Taipower third nuclear power plant, said it had spent more than one million US dollars to purchase several additional generators to prevent a catastrophic nuclear meltdown in the future, that could be caused by an earthquake or tsunami.
We have the capability to avoid a catastrophic meltdown from the nuclear reactors. The crisis at Fukushima Daiichi power plant won't happen here, he said on Tuesday.
Atomic Energy Council said the drill was designed to inspect and test the improvements made to the nation's nuclear safety mechanisms.
The council hopes to strengthen the cooperation between military and civilian emergency rescue teams during the drill.

A Hidden Coffee House Without a Name in Taiwan
A group of us went to Taichung, a city located in central Taiwan. I discovered that Taichung is a city that is full of creativity and good food and coffee. We found so many cool places, but one stood out a bit. We discovered a hidden coffee house that doesn't hold any name plaque. Literally, this cafe has no name. Even their facebook page (which is in chinese language) says 'a coffee shop with no name.'
The owner is a guy with passion for coffee. Like many coffee houses in Taiwan, this cafe does their own roasting. You can see most of his clients are regulars. The atmosphere is very old school retro with music playing from an old cassette tape player. Seriously! I'm not lying. This cafe is definitely one of the coolest coffee houses I've visited. It's small and personal. It has a perfect rating from its visitors on Facebook.
The coffee drinks were excellent. The owner who was also the barista was very friendly and attentive to his guests. For the quality of the coffee he serves, it was probably the most affordable specialty coffee I've encountered here in Taiwan (and other countries). The prices of the coffee drinks are about NT$100 (€2.8 or US$3). Incredible, isn't it!
They even sell a few pour-over equipments. One of them that stood out was a really cool invention by a Canadian company called Canadiano. It is the Canadian pour-over method of brewing coffee; in a block of wood. I first saw it when I attended the Amsterdam Coffee Festival this year. It was the best coffee maker invention I've seen this year. I was surprised out of all the coffee houses I've visited around the globe, this little hidden coffee house is the only one I've encountered to carry this brand new gadget. Anyway, Taiwan is a land for foodie who is also coffee lover. This country has some of the best coffee houses I've seen. And this NO NAME COFFEE HOUSE is definitely a must-visit!
Just in case if anyone is wondering... I haven't been paid by any of the coffee houses I've covered with my blog. I love hunting down nice coffee houses and roasters. So far, it's just a hobby of mine.
