眾所期待的【2018年平溪天燈節】預計將於107年3月2日(五)及107年9月24日(一)兩天舉行！多年來「平溪天燈節」創造了許多輝煌歷史，除享有「北天燈、南蜂炮」的盛譽，更曾獲得Discovery票選為世界第二大夜間節慶嘉年華，藉由天燈祈福許願與淨化心靈的意涵，向世界行銷新臺灣精神。
每年的元宵節，現場除了安排年節應景的民俗表演、猜燈謎及民俗大街等活動，天燈祈福仍然是整個活動的主軸。天燈燃起，希望冉起，祈福的火光群舞，幻化成願望的羽翼，將山城的夜空，妝點的分外美麗。奇幻絢麗的視覺享受，更超越文化隔閡，所以每到元宵期間，平溪當地總是湧入大量人潮，看著盞盞天燈冉冉上升，是許多臺灣人記憶中的美好經驗，也是幸福與夢想的開端。
「早期先民開墾需要勞力，農業社會中重男輕女的觀念根深蒂固，所以男丁是勞力與生產力的代名詞。昔日娶媳婦就是為了『添丁』來增加勞力，所以都會在廟宇中祈福放天燈，並在天燈上寫上『早生貴子』、『五穀豐收』之類的祈福吉祥語。
每年元宵節是春耕季節之始，先民藉由施放天燈向上天祈求一年的希望，並寫上：五穀豐收、六畜興旺……祈福字語等；讓天燈隨著風向吹向基隆河口以此向祖先報平安的意味頗濃；慢慢延續下來就變成地方上在元宵節時的小活動。古早農業社會最基本的需求就是求溫飽，『添油』、『添飯』、『添水』、『添丁』『天燈』以台語口語相傳中音與『添丁』相似，『天燈』在口語上也有『天頂的燈』之意；就這樣沿用下來，『添丁』成了『天燈』。

Early ancestors needed labor for reclamation, and the concept of patriarchy in the agricultural society was deeply ingrained, so men were synonymous with labor and productivity. The old woman was just trying to increase her labor for Tingding, so she would pray in the temple to put up sky lanterns. And on the sky lanterns, they wrote such words as King Takako and Fruit Harvest.
Every year, the Lantern Festival is the beginning of the spring cultivation season. The ancestors prayed for hope of a year by sending sky lanterns to heaven and wrote: Grain Harvest, Six Animals, Prosperity, Prayer Words, etc.; let sky lanterns blow to the Keelung River mouth with the wind direction. In this way, the meaning of peace to the ancestors is quite strong; slowly it has become a local event on the Lantern Festival. The most basic requirement of the agricultural society in ancient times was to seek food and clothing, and “add oil”, “add rice”, “add water”, “add ding”, and “day light” were similar to the “Tian Ding” in the oral tradition of Taiwanese. In the spoken language, there is also a meaning of the lamp of the zenith; as such, it is used as a daylight.
