眾所期待的【2018年平溪天燈節】預計將於107年3月2日(五)及107年9月24日(一)兩天舉行！多年來「平溪天燈節」創造了許多輝煌歷史，除享有「北天燈、南蜂炮」的盛譽，更曾獲得Discovery票選為世界第二大夜間節慶嘉年華，藉由天燈祈福許願與淨化心靈的意涵，向世界行銷新臺灣精神。

每年的元宵節，現場除了安排年節應景的民俗表演、猜燈謎及民俗大街等活動，天燈祈福仍然是整個活動的主軸。天燈燃起，希望冉起，祈福的火光群舞，幻化成願望的羽翼，將山城的夜空，妝點的分外美麗。奇幻絢麗的視覺享受，更超越文化隔閡，所以每到元宵期間，平溪當地總是湧入大量人潮，看著盞盞天燈冉冉上升，是許多臺灣人記憶中的美好經驗，也是幸福與夢想的開端。

「早期先民開墾需要勞力，農業社會中重男輕女的觀念根深蒂固，所以男丁是勞力與生產力的代名詞。昔日娶媳婦就是為了『添丁』來增加勞力，所以都會在廟宇中祈福放天燈，並在天燈上寫上『早生貴子』、『五穀豐收』之類的祈福吉祥語。

每年元宵節是春耕季節之始，先民藉由施放天燈向上天祈求一年的希望，並寫上：五穀豐收、六畜興旺……祈福字語等；讓天燈隨著風向吹向基隆河口以此向祖先報平安的意味頗濃；慢慢延續下來就變成地方上在元宵節時的小活動。古早農業社會最基本的需求就是求溫飽，『添油』、『添飯』、『添水』、『添丁』『天燈』以台語口語相傳中音與『添丁』相似，『天燈』在口語上也有『天頂的燈』之意；就這樣沿用下來，『添丁』成了『天燈』。
