Epic Ride ????️ Pingyao City, China
We take an exciting ride into the center of the ancient walled city of Pingyao, China.
Pingyao dates back 2,700 years, and is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the known world. During the Qing Dynasty this city was a financial center of China. It is still inhabited by 50,000 residents and is renowned for its well-preserved ancient city wall, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Pingyao still retains its city layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, conforming to a typical Ba gua pattern. More than 300 sites in or near the city have ancient ruins. Preserved Ming- and Qing-style residences number close to 4,000. The streets and storefronts still largely retain their historical appearance.
The city walls of Pingyao were constructed in the 3rd year of the Hongwu Emperor (1370). The walls have six barbican gates. The north and south sides have one gate each. The east and west sides have two gates each.
This pattern is similar to that of a turtle (the head, tail and four legs), earning Pingyao the moniker Turtle City. The walls measure about 12 metres high, with a perimeter of 6,000 metres. A 4-metre wide, 4-metre deep moat can be found just outside the walls. Aside from the four structured towers at the four corners, there are also 72 watchtowers and more than 3,000 battlements.

China, Pingyao night and day 2017
July and August 2017 we visited Pingyao. Pingyao is a county in central Shanxi province in China. It is located approximately 715 kilometres southwest of Beijing. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial centre of China. Today it is one of the few remaining historic cities, surrounded by an ancient guarding wall. A real beauty.

Day 6: Pingyao Ancient City exploration
Spent nine hour walking and exploring the city. It is very beautiful, but extremely crowded due to Chinese New Year.
Pingyao Travell Guide
The past prosperity of Shanxi lies in Pingyao while the soul of Pingyao lies in its Old City. What's unique here is this well-preserved ancient city with its grand, solemn city wall, its residences and shops, and even the government office all in the style of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911).

Pingyao (Chinese: 平遥) is a county in central Shanxi province in China. It is located approximately 715 kilometres (444 mi) southwest of Beijing and 80 kilometres (50 mi) from the provincial capital, Taiyuan. During the Qing Dynasty, Pingyao was a financial centre of China. The ancient city, whose history dates back some 2,700 years and which is renowned for its well-preserved city walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction. It is still inhabited by some 50,000 residents.
In 2004, part of the southern walls collapsed but were reconstructed. However, the rest of the city walls are still largely intact and are considered among the best-preserved ancient city walls on this scale. This makes the city walls the centrepiece of the Heritage Site.

Guangxi Province Vlog: Biking the YangShuo Countryside!
instagram.com/timandglo
October 12, 2014
Day 2 in YangShuo was all about biking! We rented two Giant mountain bikes from our hotel, Phoenix Pagoda, for just 50 RMB per bike per day. We set out at about 10:30 with our bikes and map and didn't return to the hotel until around 7:00 pm. We spent most of the day on quiet country roads that wove through villages and rice fields. It was BEAUTIFUL. The terrain was mostly flat although we did encounter two or three hills.
During the middle of the ride we wound up on West Street, which is the heart of YangShuo's tourist industry. It's convenient for shopping, food and accommodation but is absolutely swarming with large tourist groups, especially at night. We recommend staying in other parts of the city and visiting West Street for shopping and dining. We stayed south of YangShuo town in FengLou village, which is close to the YuLong River.
It helped to have a map, but it also led to some frustration because the map was not up-to-date and many of the paths are unmarked. This meant we got lost...a lot. Lol. At one point we were concerned that we wouldn't make it back to a main road before dark, which fortunately wasn't the case. To avoid similar stresses, we recommend starting your day earlier and having a good grasp of distances on the map, which may not be drawn to scale.
Thank you for watching!! And happy travels!!
See you in four days for our next upload! :D

歙縣徽州古城往斗山街 Huizhou Ancient City, Shexian (China)
Biking in Yangshuo: Gorgeous sights in the Chinese countryside (CC)
After we checked in to our guest house, the hubs and I rented bikes and rode to nearby Moon Hill. His prediction for the ride? I'm gonna get a sunburn and die of dehydration. What really happened was we saw cows and gorgeous scenery--karst mountains, rice paddies, lovely villages. We got a little muddy. We climbed a BAJILLION stairs. We were exhausted. But happy--very, very happy. (Closed captioned.)
Background: Yangshuo is a beautiful town in Guanxi province, near popular tourist spot, Guilin. We decided that Guilin was a little too crowded for our tastes, so we went a little off the beaten path to Yangshuo, a quieter place. (Of course, Yangshuo isn't exactly off the tourist map--there are plenty of sightseers there, too. It's just not quite as crazy as Guilin.)
We stayed outside of the city at The Giggling Tree inn, where we rented the bikes we rode to Moon Hill. The scenery could not have been more idyllic.
The Giggling Tree:
The Backdrop: We spent May-July in China (eight weeks in total). For the first month, I co-led a study abroad trip that brought sixteen college students to the Nanjing University of Science and Technology to study beginning Chinese. I also co-taught a Travel Writing class. As part of that trip, we went to Beijing, Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai, Yellow Mountain, and Slender West Lake. Once the students left for home, my husband Jesse and I traveled around China for a few more weeks. Our travels brought us to Xi'An, Chengdu, Leshan, Jiuzhaigou, Yangshuo, and Hong Kong. It was a life-changing adventure!

Finding The Perfect Riverside Chinese Town: Fenghuang Is A DREAM! (China vlog 2019 凤凰 湖南)
Tucked away deep inside China's Hunan province, is the picture-perfect riverside town of Fenghuang. Fenghuang town, sometimes called the phoenix town, isn't on most westerners' China itineraries - but it should be! From narrow cobblestoned alleys to rickety stilt houses perched right on the river, you'll repeatedly have to pinch yourself to see if you're not dreaming. And the best part? If you're lucky, you can have Fenghuang Hunan mostly to yourself - give or take a few Chinese ;)
We highly recommend visiting Fenghuang old town (also called Fenghuang gucheng), if you're planning a China trip! We promise you won't be disappointed :)
We hope you enjoyed this China vlog & the fun-loving town of Fenghuang China - there are many more videos to come as we travel China for the next few weeks! NEXT UP: a 20 hour sleeper train to Shanghai... On the busiest day of the year, the Chinese National Holiday! Care to join us on another adventure? Then please make sure to subscribe so you don't miss this next China travel vlog!
