The Pinhey's Point Foundation was established in 1980 as a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to the heritage aspects of the historic site Horaceville at Pinhey's Point on the Ottawa River near Dunrobin. The property, including the interior of the house, is subject to a preservation easement with the Ontario Heritage Trust. Horaceville, established in 1820 and named after founder Hamnett Pinhey's eldest son, remained in the Pinhey family until sold to March Township by the heirs of Miss Ruth Pinhey, who died in 1971. In 1980 the Pinhey's Point Foundation was established, charged with preserving and developing the estate as a historic site and passive recreation area. The Foundation acquired the property in 1983 and conveyed it to the City of Kanata in 1990. Kanata amalgamated into the City of Ottawa in 2001.

Founded in 1826 as Bytown, and incorporated as Ottawa in 1855, the city has evolved into the political centre of Canada. Its original boundaries were expanded through numerous annexations and were ultimately replaced by a new city incorporation and amalgamation in 2001 which significantly increased its land area. The city name Ottawa was chosen in reference to the Ottawa River, the name of which is derived from the Algonquin Odawa, meaning to trade.
Amongst the city's national museums and galleries is the National Gallery of Canada; designed by famous architect Moshe Safdie, it is a permanent home to the Maman sculpture. The Canadian War Museum houses over 3.75 million artifacts and was moved to an expanded facility in 2005. The Canadian Museum of Nature was built in 1905, and underwent a major renovation between 2004 and 2010. Across the Ottawa river in Gatineau is the most visited museum in Canada, the Canadian Museum of History. Designed by Canadian Aboriginal architect Douglas Cardinal, the curving-shaped complex, built at a cost of 340 million USD, also houses the Canadian Children's Museum, the Canadian Postal Museum and a 3D IMAX theatre.
The city is also home to the Canada Agriculture Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the Canada Science and Technology Museum, Billings Estate Museum, Bytown Museum, Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Bank of Canada Museum, and the Portrait Gallery of Canada.
The Ottawa Little Theatre, originally called the Ottawa Drama League at its inception in 1913, is the longest-running community theatre company in Ottawa. Since 1969, Ottawa has been the home of the National Arts Centre, a major performing arts venue that houses four stages and is home to the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and Opera Lyra Ottawa. Established in 1975, the Great Canadian Theatre Company specializes in the production of Canadian plays at a local level.

Ghost Tiger Beetle - Ottawa Pinhey Sand Dunes
July 14, 2013
Ottawa's only inland sand dune complex, the Pinhey sand dune complex, has survived over 10,000 years since the last ice age. This unique ecosystem is home to a number of plant and animal species which can only live in well-drained, open areas with exposed fine white sand.
The Ghost Tiger Beetle, Cicindela lepida, is a small tiger beetle found on undisturbed white sand in coastal and lake-shore sand dunes, as well as inland sand dunes and sand flats. Within Canada, the Ghost Tiger Beetle is found in the prairie provinces and in Ontario and Quebec. Ghost Tiger Beetles are pale in colour, with faint brownish markings on the elytra, making it difficult to see against the sand. When predators approach, the Ghost Tiger Beetle freezes against the sand and relies on its camouflage to protect it from detection. In fact, its camouflage is so good, that the beetle's shadow is often easier to see than the beetle itself, leading to its unusual name.

Ep9. Sailing The Ottawa River. Pros and Cons of Aylmer Island.
In this Episode, I give you the Pros and Cons of Aylmer Island as an anchorage. I am covering the various anchorages starting at the closest anchorage to the Nepean Sailing Club and going to the furthest. Be forewarned that I am not a fan of Aylmer Island as an anchorage. I am not sure why it is so popular when there are much better anchorages further up river. It is OK as a stopover anchorage to have a BBQ at, but I do not believe it is a good anchorage to try and sleep overnight on your boat.
Future episodes will cover better anchorages like Pinhey's Point and Constance Bay. To follow us you can go to:
