Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Sri Lanka 2012
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a definite highlight of any trip to the central part of Sri Lanka. The name is a bit misleading because it is not only an orphanage but also a place where captive breeding of elephants takes place. Despite this, the place is awesome. Once again the entrance fee I remember was a bit steep but it was worth every penny. As soon as we arrived we saw elephants crossing the road going to the river for a bath. After gong into the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage we were also quickly treated to a view of the baby elephants that could be fed and then a big field where the elephants spend their days. After that we followed a herd of elephants down to the river, sat at a hotel and enjoyed watching the elephants at play in the water. It was an awesome and worthwhile experience and we highly recommend the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to anyone who is traveling in the vicinity.

We made it to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Sri Lanka to be precise the Elephant Freedom Project. The projects has one elephant that is being saved from mistreatment in one of the several elephant riding places in Pinnawala. We really had a great time with the elephant called Nilame.

The Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala. Few minutes drive from Kandy, it used to be a place where abandoned and disabled elephants get lot of love, care and protection. You can watch them feed, and bath in the river and play and socialize with eachother.
But lately there have been many reports of animals being treated poorly, and even killed :(
If you are an animal lover, and care at all about animal well being, DO NOT GO HERE OR ANY OTHER PLACE WHERE THEY KEEP ANIMALS IN CHAINS TO MAKE MONEY.

Questo era uno dei miei posti preferiti: L'orfanotrofio degli elefanti a Pinnewala. Non distante da Kandy, qui si trovano elefanti che sono stati feriti o abbandonati. Qui trovano cure e protezione grazie al personale esperto. E' possibile seguire gli elefanti mentre mangiano, passeggiano e mentre fanno il bagno nel fiume quando giocano e socializzano tra di loro.
Almeno cosi credevo, ma la verità è tutt'altro: Animali maltrattati, imprigionati, il loro compito era curare e liberare gli animali, ma hanno capito che si fa più soldi tenendoli come prigionieri per i turisti che vogliono fare le foto... quindi evitate perfavore questo posto.
ormai è solo una tamarrata turistica.
Ogni volta che cancello il video riappare in un altro canale caricato da qualcun altro, quindi mi hanno consigliato di non cancellarlo più, in modo che appena qualcuno carica questo video, posso segnalarla.

On a wet Sri Lankan day, we visited the fairly new (still under construction and expanding) Pinnawala Zoo. Would be great to come back and visit once the Zoo is fully complete.
Since we were near the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, we thought we'd make a quick visit to see the Elephants bathing in the river. I never say no to seeing elephants!

The elephant orphanage is a sanctuary for over 80 retired, abused or orphaned elephants. The daily highlight is the walk from the Orphanage to take the herd down to the river to bathe the elephants . Its amazing to watch an entire herd splashing around and rolling in the river...you can as well spot an elephant hoping with three legs, one being amputed ..music courtesy youtube library...video taken from my files.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage Srilanka - Travel Sri Lanka
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, halfway between the present capital Colombo and the ancient royal residence Kandy. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department in a 25 acre coconut property adjoining the Maha Oya River. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned Elephants found in the jungles of Sri Lanka.
In 1978 the orphanage was taken over by the National Zoological Gardens from the Department of Wildlife. A captive breeding program was launched in 1982. Since the inception of the program over 20 elephants have been bred here. The aim of the orphanage is to simulate a natural habitat to these elephants. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice a day for a bath, and all the babies less than three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers.
Each animal is also given around 76 kg of green matter a day and around 2 kg from a food bag containing rice bran and maize. The orphanage which boasts to have the largest herd of captive elephants in the world is very popular and visited daily by many Sri Lankan and foreign tourists. The main attraction is clearly to observe the elephants bathing which is quite a spectacle.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a place for the lost young elephants in Sri Lanka or those who had injuries that required close monitoring to ensure their survival. The orphanage proved an opportunity to get closer to these beautiful and loving young elephant calves to feed them with milk.

Elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka
Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage and breeding ground for wild elephants which is situated northwest of the town of Kegalle, Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation on a 25-acre (10 ha) coconut plantation on the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned elephants found in the jungle.
The aim of the orphanage is to simulate the natural world. However, there are some exceptions: the elephants are taken to the river twice daily for a bath, and all the babies under three years of age are still bottle fed by the mahouts and volunteers. Each animal is also given around 76 kilograms (170 lb) of green manure a day and around 2 kg (4.4 lb) from a food bag containing rice bran and maize. They get access to water twice a day, from the river.
This elephant orphanage is also a breeding place for elephants. More than twenty-three elephants have been born since 1984, and the orphanage has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. While most of the elephants are healthy, one is blind, and one, named Sama, has lost her front right leg to a land mine.
The orphanage is very popular among local and foreign tourists. The main attraction is the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the broad river bank as the herd interacts socially, bathing and playing.
The orphanage is open to the public daily, and all admission fees are used to look after the elephants. Visitors to the park can view many different aspects of the care and daily routine of the elephants, such as bottle feeding of elephant calves, feeding of all other elephants, and bathing. Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is also the subject of a report by the Born Free Foundation which calls into question the animal welfare at the orphanage.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 13 km (8.1 mi) northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala is notable for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 39 males and 49 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.

So although I had fun making this video, I do warn you that because it is called an orphanage it could make you think its a nice moral place for the elephants. It is not really. There is no elephant riding but the elephants are all still tamed meaning they have gone through the torturing process known as crushing to make them tame and safe for tourists to get close to them. No elephant camp in Sri Lanka to my knowledge is nice for the elephants. You can make a decision whether you want to go or not.
Its a double edged sword because without the money coming form the tourism it also would not be great fr the elephants either.
Nothing is simple!

On the way to the orphanage, he passes through a small town with vendors who sell and make beautiful furniture, baskets, canes and ornaments for homes out of bamboo. When arriving at the Elephant Orphanage, David learns and takes you through the process where they actually make different coloured papers out of elephant dung. It's absolutely incredible and fascinating.

Pinnawala a small village in Sri Lanka has become the home to the largest group elephants in the worlds. Inside Pinnawala orphanage there are about 80 elephants of all ages.
