TROPICAL Puerto Rican STREET FOOD TOUR | Piñones, Puerto Rico
During my trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in Partnership with the Intercontinental San Juan, I decided to head out to Piñones to try some tropical authentic Puerto Rican Street Food!
25 Puerto Rican Dishes You Must Eat:
I arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico early in the morning and headed straight to the Intercontinental San Juan to check in and to show you my club level suite. My suite is huge!
From their I grabbed a quick 15 minute uber ride east to Piñones. This area has one road and their are tons of restaurants and kioskos (traditional huts) where they serve authentic Puerto Rican street food.
My first stop was at Donde Olga Bar & Restaurant to try a Bacalaito which is a salted cod pancake fritter and a Alcapurria which is fried green banana stuffed with crab or beef. Both of these Puerto Rican street foods are must tries when you visit Puerto Rico!
Next we walked over to El Barriles Restaurant to try some Mofongo with Seafood! Mofongo is fried plantain mash with seafood. This is the star of Puerto Rican street food dishes. It is so yummy mixed in with the seafood!
On our way to our next stop I stumbled on Ostiones Vivos Kiosko. This is a small hut serving local Puerto Rican ostras or oysters! They are small bite sized oysters but if you like oysters you will love them!
Our final stop is Sabores de Piñones where I tried two local specialities, Pionono is a stuffed fried plantain stuffed with beef and a Rellenos de Papa which is a fried mash potato stuffed with ground beef.
I think the Pionono was my favorite because it was so sweet but the Bacalaito and Mofogo were off the chain!
Big thanks to my friends at the Intercontinental San Juan:

Wiki-
Loíza (Spanish pronunciation: [loˈisa]) is a town and municipality on the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, north of Canóvanas; east of Carolina, Puerto Rico; and west of Río Grande, Puerto Rico.
Some say its name comes from a female cacique, named Loaíza or Yuíza, who governed the region formerly called Jaymanío, on the shores of the Río Grande de Loíza. It is said that this cacique might have married a mulatto conquistador called Pedro Mejías, but there is no evidence of this.[1] Other sources point to a Spanish landlord named Iñigo López de Cervantes y Loayza, who owned a lot of the territory, and was renowned among governors and colonists of the time.
It is said that a crown decree from Spain in the 1600s, instructed slaves to be sent to the region of Loíza. Many people believe this might account for the high ratio of Black people in Loíza.
In 1692, Loíza was officially declared an urban area due to its population (100 houses and 1,146 residents), but it was in 1719 that the Spanish government declared it as an official town. It was founded by Gaspar de Arredondo. After being demoted, it was again established as a municipality in August 16, 1970.[citation needed]
In the 1970s, an Aero Virgin Islands DC-3 plane crashed in a Loíza beach, with no fatalities.
In 2017, Loíza suffered a catastrophic hit from Hurricane Maria like the rest of Puerto Rico.In 2018, it was featured in an episode of Bar Rescue called Operation: Puerto Rico where bar consultant and native Puerto Rican Jon Taffer visited Loíza to rescue an area bar and turned it into a community rescue, repairing a local community center, playground, baseball field and basketball court as well as the bar.
Route 187 Piñones Puerto Rico
A Drive On Route 187 PIÑONES PR
We took a quick drive through Route 187 Piñones Puerto Rico. Better known for their typical fritters like; Alcapurrias, Bacalaitos, Empanadas. All local delights and treats of savory flavors.
The people seem truly optimistic regardless of the harsh impact from hurricane Maria. You can see by the video footage some areas are still recovering while others abandon their site.
As always, hope you guys enjoy.

Top 10 Puerto Rican Street Foods | The BEST Street Food in Puerto Rico
In the summer of 2018, I visited the island of Puerto Rico and had a blast eating and drinking my way through the the island with my travel buddy Mariel de Viaje.

In addition to its warm weather and gorgeous beaches, Puerto Rico is also well known for its rich and fatty foods, fresh seafood, and strong tropical drinks. I tried dozens of dishes while I was there, but I wanted to share the absolute best with you guys with this list of the top 10 street foods I ate on the island. Let’s dive in!
My Film Making Kit ►
-Alcapurria
I found this fried, cylindrical fritter in two locations: Donde Olga Bar & Restaurant in Piñones and Kiosko Luquillo in the town of Luquillo. It’s made with a dough of mashed green plantains that is stuffed with a savory meat filling and then deep-fried. The kind I had was filled with some extremely flavorful blue crab meat and was like a big croqueta!
-Bacalaito
While I was at Donde Olga Bar & Restaurant in Piñones, I also tried the Bacalaito, a thin, flat, deep fried fritter made of cod fish, flour, and baking powder. There are so many textures at work here: crispy, crunchy, dense, and chewy, and the flavors of cod fish and the spices are insanely delicious. Have this greasy street food with a nice, cold beer!
-Lechon
To find this heavenly roasted pork dish, head to La Ruta de Lechon in Guavate. Here, the entire pig is roasted over a flame for four hours until the skin gets crispy, but the meat underneath is perfectly tender and juicy. It’s pork, so of course it’s fatty, but it is so worth it, especially the crispy skin, which is called cuerito. If you love pork you have to try lechon!
-Morcilla
This unique sausage, which contains a mix of pork blood, rice, and spices, might not sound appetizing to everyone, but just give it a chance. I tried some fantastic morcilla along La Ruta de Lechon in Guavate and it blew me away. It was tender and flavorful, with a fantastic texture from the rice, and was one of the best morcillas I’ve ever had.
-Mofongo
One of the more well-known Puerto Rican foods, I tried this mashed plantain, meat, and vegetable dish three times: at Los Barriles in Piñones, Vaca Brava in Old San Juan, and Costa Mia in Las Croabas. My favorite was the seafood mofongo at Costa Mia, which came with large, succulent shrimp and mussels in an amazing, flavorful sauce. It was outstanding!
-Fiambrera
This Puerto Rican bowl dish, which I found at Alcapurria Quema in the Lote 23 food truck center in San Juan, can be made with lots of different ingredients, including meat, chicken, corned beef, ropa vieja, carne asada, chicharron, vegetables, or cod fish. The flavors and textures were out of this world! This traditions and filling dish’s name literally translates to “everything mixed into a big plate.”
-Oysters
If you go to a small hut in Pinones called Ostiones Vivos Kiosko, you’ll find some small, but incredible, raw oysters, which is one of my favorite types of seafood. They are freshly caught every day, and a squeeze of lime takes their flavor to a whole new level. Get them if you want some quality seafood on a budget!
-Carrucho/Conch Ceviche
After so many heavy and fried foods, it was nice to have something that was light and refreshing when I visited Kiosko Luquillo in Luquillo. The conch was moist and buttery, and had a texture similar to a scallop, with a mussel-like taste, and a nice blend of spices on it. It was, hands-down, my favorite dish in Los Kioskos de Luquillo.
-Pitorro
You won’t find this homemade moonshine-like drink in any restaurant or kiosko because it’s illegal to sell, but luckily for me, a friend on the island hooked me up with three flavors: Coconut, Tamarind-Passionfruit, and Coconut with Almond. The first two weren’t that strong, but the Coconut with Almond will knock you out!
-Piña Colada
After a long day out in the sun, it was nice to cool down with this tropical drink at Costa Mia in Las Croabas. With a mound of whipped cream, a cherry, and lots of rum in it, it was sweet, refreshing, and full of delicious pineapple flavor!
And there you have it! I hope you enjoyed my list of the top 10 Puerto Rican street foods. If you did, please give this video a thumbs up, leave me a comment below, and subscribe to my channel!

Top 10 Puerto Rican Street Foods | The BEST Street Food in Puerto Rico
Driving in Puerto Rico - Loíza Piñones (PR - 187) and The Ghost Tale of the Scented Tree
This video will take you through the entire municipality of Loíza (From West to East). I will drive through Piñones first and then through downtown and its communities. Whenever I get hungry, beachy & thirsty I head to Piñones. It is the best place for me to hang out on weekends especially Friday nights and Saturdays. Sundays are also a blast because Jeep owners and lovers gather around for a Jeep parade fest in Piñones. Frituras or anything that is deliciously eaten fried is the best choice of munchies while riding or a day at the beach. Also, this route is taken as an alternate more scenic route to take when heading to El Yunque.
Please enjoy. I love to bring these experiences to you.
Thank you

Puerto Rican STREET FOOD at Kiosko Luquillo + El Yunque Rainforest | Luquillo, Puerto Rico
On my third day in San Juan, Puerto Rico in partnership with the Intercontinental San Juan, I headed to explore the El Yunque Rainforest and to eat Puerto Rican street food at Kiosko Luquillo!
Subscribe to Mariel de Viaje ►
My Film Making Kit ►
We started the day by driving 45 minutes east to visit the El Yunque Rainforest. We saw the Coca Waterfall, Yokahu Tower and the Damas Pool. Each one gives you a completely different experience that are well worth it. If you see a coconut vender, definitely stop and have some coconuts in El Yunque Rainforest!
Next we drove down to the town of Luquillo and visited the Kiosko Luquillo which is a strip of small restaurants next to Luquillo beach, one of the prettiest beaches in Puerto Rico.
We tried a bunch of Puerto Rican street food, like Alcapurrias, Coconut Candy, Blue Crab Empanada, Rellenos de Papa, Carrucho Ceviche and we finished the day off with a 32 oz mojito!
My personal favorite was the Carrucho Ceviche, it was super refreshing and way less filling compared to all the fried foods. I recommend you try all these Puerto Rican street foods and visit El Yunque rainforest when you visit Puerto Rico!
Big thanks to my friends at the Intercontinental San Juan:
